Alberta Springston was my great grandmother. She married Grover Cleveland Starkey. I think she was born in 1883 and died in 1971, but I'm not positive. She lived in Summit County, OH. I want to know more about this side of my family and where they came from. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

My wife descends from the Springston(stone)(steen)s of Spencer County, IN
I understand that these were not related to the Southern bunch who had Cherokee blood. Wife's grandmother, Garcia Ethyl Springston, said her family was "Indians" but we never got any more detail.
Does anyone know of any connection with the Cherokee and the Northern branch of Springstons.

Springston Cemetery - Roane Co. WV

Descendants of William and George Gray Springston will be interested to learn that a local resident took it upon herself to hire a man to clear the cemetery twice each year for the past three years. Her name is Willadean Webb, Triplett Road, Spencer, WV 25276. Phone (304)927-3524. I plan to write her a letter of thanks, and hope that all descendants reading this will also send her a note.
The cemetery still is not as well cared for as it should be, so I have employed a local man to clean it up this fall, and I will check with Willadean to be sure his work is satisfactory. If so, I will employ him to mow it 3 or 4 times next year at a cost of $35.00 each mowing. I am also getting a quotation on a sign for the cemetery. This will be expensive and I may need some help from some of you to defray its cost.
My personal thanks to Sue Waterman for placing a tombstone in the Woodford Cemetery for Jacob Jr. and Luda Goff Springston.

Springston

There is another bunch of Cherokee Springstons: The 1/2 blood Betsy Scott(daughter of Walter Scott, British agent to the Cherokees during the American Revolution) had children by at least 7 men, including Edward Springston. Their children were Jennie Springston (1 of the 2 wives of "Rich Joe" Vann) & Edley Springston, who clashed with other offspring over Betsey's estate (including William Burgess & Delilah McNair nee Vann); this case is in the Docket Book of the Cherokee Supreme Court (original records in the Tennessee State Archives).

I am descended from Betsey Scott's 1/2 sister, Sally Scott, whose mother was Sarah Hicks, sister of Charles Renatus Hicks. Sally Scott (her husband George McDonald was the uncle of Chief John Ross) was thus a first cousin of James Bigby, Thomas Wilson & presumeably George Wilson. Sometimes is seems that all Cherokees eventually turn out to be related or married to each other.
