Seeking information on Horace Sproul(Sprowl)and family. Horace was born in March of 1868 in Illinois and married Laura Buckner in Calhoun County, IL 26 Nov 1891. The 1900 census shows them residing in Ohio Grove, Mercer County, IL. I can't seem to find them after 1900. They had two daughters in 1900; Ethel, b. 1893 and Florence, b. 1896.
Any leads appreciated.

Bonnie,

We corresponded 9 or 10 years ago. At that time I was living in Granada Hills, CA. Since then both my husband and I have retired - sold everything in California - bought a home in Prineville, Oregon.

I have also corresponded with your niece, Julia.

I'm not a SPROUL. I'm a HARTFORD. Eliza Eleanor Hartford Sproul was a sister of my grandfather, Charles (Charley) Cory Hartford.

I called the North Clark Historical Museum regarding the journal. Spoke with a woman named Roberta. Roberta checked in several files but could not find any hint of the journal. My information is that the journal was given to a lady named Minnie McClellan who was somehow associated with the Museum. The lady I spoke with is acquainted with Minnie (Minnie she says is 92 years old). She said she would speak with Minnie and if she comes up with any information she will call me back. So far I haven't heard from her. If you have any suggestions about a next move please share.

Ann Gilmore of Prineville, OR

Bonnie,
The journal is real - I actually had it in my hands in 1988 when my sister & I visited Jane. I've been trying for years now to get a copy of it and I think I am finally getting closer.
A journal that was in Jane's possession was donated to a musium in Amboy, Washington after Jane's death. I'm thinking this is probably the same journal. I have yet to talk to anyone at the museum about what can and cannot be obtained from them but that will be my next step.
Ann

Hi Ann, Theresa Jane is the daughter of my husbands greatgrand parents, George A. Sproul and Eliza E. Hartford, which makes her his great aunt. I don't know about any journal but would be interested to hear about anything you find out. We visited Eliza when she was at the ripe age of 102 and was living with Teresa.

Thanks,
Bonnie

I just saw your reply. I don't believe Owen Sproul has anything to do with the NJ Sproul's. There were Sproul's in VA. Starting with Robert (late 1700's). He had a large family and some of them may have traveled to KY. There is documentation on this family.

Remember that the are known as Pa. was once also virginia. From what I have learned, the Cecil Twp. family was part of the Va. clan, since that area was Va. in 1780's or so (am not good at history). I will go thru what I have received from a Sproul "cousin" who has done and is doing extensive Sproul research. Give me a couple days to sift thru it. The names you mention are not familiar with our Sprowls family. Francis and Andrew seem to be a name passed down in the Sproul family. ALTHO, we do have Sprowls whose name was changed to Sproul and Sprouls, and they did migrate to Ohio. But I don't think to Licking or Fairfield Co. Send me your email address and I will let you know what I find. Mine is sprowls@ncweb.com
I will also forward your message to the cousing who is doing the major research for Sproul, altho I have not heard from him in months.
Sincerely,
Ruth

Do you know where in Canada she was born, I'm looking for siblings of my ancestor John Sproul, born 1810, father James they lived in the Prince Edward County area of Ontario until 1842 when they moved to Brock County. The name Elizabeth Jane has been passed down in my twig of the tree. My 4th generation past gave their 1st born daughter the name in 1850's. Records were kept until 1845 so I'm having trouble locating info on the family arriving in Canada. Maybe we could swap notes if any of this might help you.

I have a copy of the chart for Robert Sproule of Co. Tyrone, whose author was Hazel Sproul Wright. This goes back to 1650 and it includes John "Jack Roe" Sproule of Carrickamulkin. It starts with Robert Sproule, then his son Andrew, then his son Joseph who married a (?) Mathewson and their son was John "Jack Roe" Sproule. I can mail you a copy of this chart. It is about 5 pages of 8 1/2x11 but you can enlarge it on a copier to larger paper and piece it together. My email is sprowls at ncweb.com and send me your postal mailing address. I will be glad to send copies to anyone interested.
Sincerely,
Ruth Sprowls (Madison, Ohio)

At this time my offer still stands. What I will need is your brother's name (first and last are required), mailing address, and e-mail address. The mailing address is required so that the testing organization, DNA Heritage, can mail him the test kit; the email address is where they will send his results. Providing these addresses to me implies that he agrees to be tested (a legal requirement).

Send this data to me at phsprowl@insightbb.com I will take it from there.

If you or he have any further questions, I will be happy to answer them. One caution; if you send me these addresses and don't receive a response from me within a few days, resend the message. My e-mail service provider is in the last stages of a massive server update. My e-mail was down for most of last week. Messages people sent me dissappeared into cyberspace. I believe it is working OK now.

This will serve to correct and clarify some information on my original post. The birthdate is extrapolated from her death certificate. She could have been born as late as 1810. The 1850 Census lists her age as 40. Her father's name now looks like John on the death certificate. Both James and John were on there, with one name crossed out. Her full name may have been Elizabeth Jane. Elizabeth's son, my gr grandfather, named his first daughter Elizabeth Jane.

I would assume that since Dongeal Twp. is so close to East Finley and Claysville, that the James Sproul in Donegal Twp. is a SPROWLS. I do not have notes handy to verify just which James he would be but most of the Sproul family from VA. is in the Cecil Twp. area. (they descend from Hugh and Francis.)
I will check reports sent to me by other Sproul/Sprowls researchers and see what I can find for you. Can you give me more info, since there are so many James in both families.
Thanks,
Ruth Sprowls sprowls@ncweb.com

This sounds like the same family I'm helping a cousin research. I'm looking for information on Robert HENRY who was possibly married to Margaret SPROUL in Westmoreland Co. PA. I find them in Harrison Co. OH by 1830. I can't find Robert after 1840 census, so assume he died between 1840 and 1850 in OHIO. Some of this family later moved to Tuscarawas Co. OH.

This Robert would have been born between 1770 and 1780. His son James reports on the 1850 and 1880 census that both of his parents were born in IRELAND.

Do you think there is a connection?

Thanks,
Taj

Looking for information on John SPROUL. What I have on him so far is unsourced, but it appears he owned 25 acres of land and was employed as an ale taster in Glasgow.

He supposedly had a daughter named Janet SPROUL who was born about 1525. Janet is rumoured to have married John DICKEY in 1583, but I think she'd have been a little long in the tooth to be marrying and having three sons. She would have been 58 at the time of her marriage and having children in her 60s. That doesn't happen with regularity today, much less in an era where perfectly healthy teenage girls died giving birth. So I'm not sure about this Janet.

That's why I'm trying to find out more about John SPROUL. Thanks!

My husband is a descendant of William Rice, born 1760 in Ireland, who settled in Monroe Co. West Virginia. His son John married Mary Sproul, and I'm pretty certain the James you list married Williams's daughter Sarah/Sallie/Sadie Rice. Sallie died at some point and James moved to Kosciusko Co., Indiana. John Rice, who had no children, left a portion of his estate to Sallie and James' children: Elizabeth Ballard, M. Catherine Sproul, and Rebecca Borthwick. Catherine and Rebecca lived in Indiana; I think Elizabeth stayed in West Virginia.

If my James Sproul and yours are the same (both born in 1781), I can answer one of your "where-did-they-go" mysteries--James was a schoolteacher in Indiana.

Sue Rice

Then she married a McChesney. I don't know his first name.

These are some of the blank areas in my research:
1.Who was James' parents.
2.Zilpha's mother maiden name.
3.Zilpha's third husband's name.
4.Who was appointed guardian to her children when James died?
5.Did she live on the Sproul farm?

I'm delighted that you replied to my query.

We live about an hour from where the farm was located.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Jean

Thanks so much. I really have nothing more on this James Sproul of Donegal twp except the 1810 census and I gave those statistics in my last e-mail. He has two males under 10, 1 age 10-15. Presumably James himself is the male over 45. On the female side there are 3 females under 10, one age 10-15. James' wife is prorbably the 26-44 year old.
My Licking Co Oh Sproul family arrived around 1820, but the male head of household had died leaving a widow (given name unknown) and a family later known to be:
1.James, born before 1800, married 1820 Licking Co to Sarah Murphy
2. Margaret, born 1798, married 1820 to William Deweese
3. Frances, born ca 1802, married Henry Smith Jr. in 1828
4. Andrew, born 1804, married Caroline Trump in 1834 in Fairfield Co., Oh.
5. Sarah, born 10 Oct 1805, married Isaac Seymour in 1825.
6. Elizabeth, born bef. 1810, married Archibald Slane
7. John, born ca 1810.

Although the match is almost a perfect one with the James Sprowl in the 1810 census I am by no means certain the identification is correct. The birthplaces of the above are inconsistently given in later census. James died in 1831 so is not in a census. Margaret and Andrew are usually given as born in Pennsylvania. Frances and Sarah are usually given as Virginia. The latter two also died before the 1850 census.

I have noted that Donegal twp is on the Virginia line which could cause some of the birth confusion. But I also note that Donegal is near Finley, as you point out, so the above "James Sproul" may really be a Sprowls from your group.

Thanks for keeping the matter in mind if any records of interest surface. You are my best hope for identifying James Sproul of Donegal twp.
Gary E Young
Does anyone know if the James Sproul in the 1810 census of Donegal twp., Washington Co., Pa belongs to the other Sproul/Sprowl families in the county? The composition of his family is exactly like that of my Sproul ancestor who apparently died about 1820 in Licking Co., Oh. 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male over 45; 3 females under 10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 26 to 44. However, my cluster of Sproul siblings in Licking Co Oh claim both Pa and Va as their places of birth. The other Sprowls in Washington Co seem to be large associated with Cecil and East Finley townships.

I'd be willing to participate:

I have a tree that I have evidence takes me back to Tyrone under the Surname Sproule. John Sproule immigrated from Tyrone in 1823 to Ormstown, PQ. Although based on other researcher's work, links my family to Walter Spreull.

Let's work the details thru my email - LanSpr@aol.com

Phil, If your offer for the DNA testing still stands, my brother, who lives in Johnstown, PA, would be interested. We have been trying to connect our Sprowl family to the SW PA Sprowls for years with no luck.

I am interested in finding someone who may know of Lillie Mae Sproul, born April 12, 1866 in Hamburg Iowa, parents George and Susana. She married William Berry about 1902, location unknown. Census suggests this was her second marriage. First marriage info unknown. She died in CA in 1930.

My primary interest is in her husband William Berry. I would like to correspond with anyone whose research includes this person.
