I have a small family of Sproul's in Lansing, Michigan. My grandfather, Thomas Cecil Sproul was born 4/3/1928 in the Detroit area (Royal Oak). His father was Byron Paul Sproul and his mother was Anonda (not sure of last name). He had 3 brothers, all of whom are gone now. I know 2 of their names were Bob (Robert) and Dick (Richard). Not sure the third. Anyone out there related to my line?

Hello. I live in Flint Michigan. Heres what I know about my family. First my maternal grandfathers' name is Robert Sprowl. He has told us that it was once Sproule. His father (my great grandfather) also named Robert Sprowl, married Eva Thomas. O.K. now heres where I figure I have some OTHER family out there. My great grandfater, Robert Sprowl eventually left Eva Thomas-Sprowl and his son Robert (my great grandmather and her son, my grandfather) and no one knows what ever happended to Robert Sr. So I figure he went out and had another out there...

What is Mauch Chunk? It's a lovely victorian tourist town located in NE Pennsylvania. The town changed it's name to Jim Thorpe (after the great Olympic Athlete) in 1954. We were quite well known in the late 1800's and early 1900's as a coal shipping town. Jim Thorpe (Mauch Chunk) has quite a history.

Ora and Effie are the great-grandchildren of Elizabeth FERGUS/Hazlet SPROULL and the daughters of Robert Hazlett SPROULL and Hannah “Amanda” STROUD. They had 11 children who were:

Francis Israel SPROULL
Joseph L. SPROULL
James L. SPROULL
Edwin S. SPROULL
John “Bea” SPROULL
Effie E. SPROULL
Leora “Ora” SPROULL
George Vest SPROULL
Eva SPROULL

I would like to find any living descendants of these two lovely ladies in the photograph, in order to return the photographs to the family.

I know that Effie married Hillis E. BRITTON and that they had two children, Eunice and Lucila. The latter girl does not appear after the 1900 census and may have died as a child. That would leave Eunice who was born about 1895. Did Eunice BRITTON marry? Did she have any children?

Ora SPROULL married an Unknown JOHNSON. I do not know if she had any children.

My GGrandfather was William Abner Sprowl and GGrandmother was Mary Etta. They were married in 1862 Gibson Indiana. I have photos/letters. They called him Abner. Contact me if there is any linkage. Possilbe relative to James A. Sprowl, justice of the peace.

I have noticed that a couple frequently was married a few days apart in two different parishes. I assume, in this case, that Kilbarchan was the parish of the groom, Abbey (Paisley) that of the bride.

I just discovered something else on my family tree, on my Dad's side there was also a Sprowl. Her name was Hannah, married to Franklin Sprinkle, thier son, Herman was my Great Grandfather. I'am also stuck on this line. Thier son , Herman, was born in Lancaster Twp., Huntington Indiana. Maybe there is a connection? If anyone has info on this I would appreciate having it also. surnamed Sproul (or any variant of that name) to have a 43
marker genealogical DNA test. This test can prove/disprove one's
paternal ancestry and connect with unknown others of the same

Thanks for the response. I have just recently become interested in my geneology, on behalf of my sister. I am from Indiana, currently living in Greenfield, IN. I, and all of my siblings were born in Muncie. The chief items I am missing at this time are date of death of James A Sprowl, date and place of birth and date of death of his wife Elizabeth; also how many children did James' father Joseph have. I have located records for six; I found one claim that he had eight. Any light you could shed on these items would be greatly appreciated.

I do have a somewhat complete listing of Joseph's children, (birthdates, spouses, marriage & death dates), and pretty complete stuff on the William & Mary Sprowl line. I'll need some time to dig up some things at home (at present I very busy with work related issues, so it may be a few days). Nice to hear that some one is interested.

I am searching for a James Sprowls married to Ann, do not have last name for her. They were from Washington Co. Pa. They had a son Albert Sprowls born about 1835, he married Elizabeth Cotts in Wheeling West Virginia.Does any of this connect to your Sprowls? Albert was killed in a riot in SteubenvilleOhio in 1879. Was told that there was family in Belmont but do not know who they were.

Obituary :

Mrs. Jane Sprowl, widow of Hugh Sprowl, deceased, and who resided one and one-half miles east of Freeport, died very suddenly on Friday morning, October 29, 1880, aged 54 years, 9 months and 19 days.

She has been a sufferer at times for over a year with a severe pain in her head. On last Friday morning whe went out, feeling well as usual, to milk the cows. A member of the family hearing her scream, ran to her and assisted her to the house.

Dr. H. C. Black was summoned, but she had just breathed her last when he arrived, being about one hour from the time the alarm was given by herself. The Doctor informs us that her pulse beat regularly for several minutes after she ceased breathing.

Mrs.Sprowl was a highly respected and consistent member of the Presbyterian Church. The afflicted family have the sympathy, in their bereavement, of a large circle of friends and acquaintances.

Her funeral which took place on Sabbath, was largely attended. Rev. McDonald preached an appropriate sermon for the occasion, in the Presbyterian Church, from the chosen text : " Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord."

After further research, this line of Sprowl entered the country around 1756, i.e. William Sproul, in VA. Also Samuel Sprowl is not believed to be a direct ancestor, but a brother to William Sprowl of this generation, from TN. DOB 1784.

If your gguncle's name was Collins, he probably married a daughter, Achasa Jane, of my gggrandfather James A. Sprowl. The last account I have of her is that she was living in Iowa, Ringold County I believe.

My g-g-g-grandfather was Joseph M Sprowl who settled in Lancaster Twp, Huntington County in 1834. I have a fairly complete geneology, lacking primarily names and birthdates of his children. I am descended from his son James A. I have found sketchy reference to two others, Robert, and Polly A. Also found one reference to a total of eight children. Can you fill in these gaps? I would greatly appreciate any info you can provide.

Still researching parents and siblings of William Sprowl who married a woman named Ruanna and fathered at least 11 children. William was born in PA about 1810. He died in Fulton Co, PA in 1888. I can't seem to connect this man to any of the other PA Sprowl/Sproul lines.
