Stacy: Check under other spellings of Spurgeon; census takers were notorious for mispelling names; try Spurgin, Spergin, etc. My grandfather George was living with an Adaline Spurgeon, and the Bagwell family in Yalobusha county in 1880 census. I believe Adaline to be his mother, because he named a daughter Senia Adaline (my great aunt). It was common to name your children after your mother/father/brother, etc. I have hit a dead end with George and it's driving me crazy! There is a cemetary in Lafayette county with nothing but Spurgeons buried there. Check interment records also. May hit on something there.

Yes, I have too. My great grandfather was George Spurgeon. Can't find any records on him except a census when he was 11 years old. The court house for Lafayette county burned in the 1800's, and I'm thinking alot of records were lost.

Have hit a brick wall...looking for info re: George W. Spurgeon married Colena Elizabeth "Betty" Brown. He was born around 1850's. Only able to find their marriage record. I know that Lafayette county courthouse burned with records destroyed. I have been to Lafayette county cemetaries looking for his grave and could not find. It will take either someone from the area having information, or family of their children having the info. Children included, James, Ezechial Oscar, Olive, Senia, Vada, Homer and Leonard. Any help appreciated!

I have Fairy living in 1954, and her husband's father being born in 1863, and married in 1892. David (a third child), and thus Fairy, were then probably born circa 1900-1915.
Bertha Spurgeon married Sam Barclay/Barcley/Barkely in 1905 in Jackson Co., AL

I am looking for the children of Bertha Spurgeon and Samuel Arther Barclay (Barkley/Barcley). Bertha died in 1924 in Lawrence Co., AL and some of her children went to live with her brother, Andrew Wann Spurgeon and his wife Ethel Louise Berry Spurgeon. Uncle Wann adopted at least one of the children-Howard who was born in 1923. My father told me that some of the girls also went to live with Uncle Wann. He said that they went by the Spurgeon last name. Some of the children were old enough to have been on their own when their mother died.

Sam died in 1949 and is buried in Scottsboro, Jackson Co., AL.

Children found in the 1910 and 1920 census were Clarence, born in c. 1905-1907; Bradford, born c. 1909; Katherine, born c. 1914; and Elsie born c. 1916. There is also a Ray that one of my cousins has listed, but we are not sure if he is another of the children or was born after 1920.

In 1930 Howard is found living in the household of Uncle Wann and it is notated that he was adopted. His last name is given as Spurgeon. I cannot find any of the other children in 1930 nor can I find Sam Barclay, so I am assuming that they were missed.

Does any have any info on this family? My living aunts don't know or don't remember very much about the family.

Thank you

Mona Spurgeon Herrin
Debbie: I am trying to trace my grandparents. My father's Grandmother was Minnie ( or possibly Minerva )Spurgeon. Her parents by all that I can find were Lemuel G. Spurgeon and Catherine Cummins. Minnie married William(s)M Harris. My father and his parents never talked about my Grandfather's side of the family. So any information I can gather would be greatly appreciated. I have been able to find more information on the Spurgeon side than the Harris side.

Thanks
