Re: Correction-descendants of Indiana Spurlin line

Hello Lucy, I have made the requested correction on my family tree. I also go straight back to Jesse Spurling. I've gone back to his father Jesse Spurling who died in 1813 at Ft Meigs in Ohio. I'm trying to fit Richard Spurling who lived in Virginia in 1623 to this family line. I believe there is a connection but am missing 3 or 4 generations. Since the earliest Jesse Spurling was so close to the are where Richard Spurling lived, I keep thinking they are related. Have you found any thing? I would like to be in contact with you since we share a direct Spurling ancestor. I'm a Spurlin. Do you know why your family changed to Sperlin? I always thought it was an error in the records. Jacqui Spurlin

SPURLIN/BALDWIN MARRIAGE BEF 1786 NC>GA

I am a new subscriber to the Spurlin e-mail list, but not new to genealogy research. I am seeking parents for Druscilla(vr. spellings)Baldwin who married Jeremiah Spurlin and a possible marriage record before 1786 if one exists probably in North Carolina or Georgia or somewhere along the way. Some years ago a Bible Record of this couple's family was submitted to NSDAR naming their children with birth dates and her maiden name, but no marriage date or place.
Jeremiah Spurlin (vr. spellings)was originally from North Carolina. By late 1787 Jeremiah and Drusiller Spurlin/g were selling land in Wilkes County, Georgia, on the Ogechee River. They were still in Wilkes County in early 1791 when Jeremiah Spurlin bought more land on the north side of Joe's Creek (map location?)where he lived.
Family members eventually moved farther west in Georgia and on to Alabama and eventually to Texas. Elizabeth Spurlin married Thompson Fondren in 1832 in Houston County, Georgia. This is one of my husband's lines that I have not updated in sometime.
There are some posting on this board/list about this family. However, they are several years old and do not show e-mail addresses. I found nothing on the Baldwin board. I just subscribed to that e-mail list as well.
Vivian Cates, S H 21 W, Alto, Texas 75925 1-936-858-3801 dbcates@myinu.net

As an update: It is also listed on the internet that Berry Spurlin married Millie Marler on July 21, 1837 in Hardeman Co., TN.
The Marler's lived next door, so this seems more likely.

This weekend I had the honor of laying a wreath at the Vietnam Memorial in honor of Lt. Daniel Raymond Spurlin on behalf of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association. I am trying to find some of Daniel's personal history before he went to Vietnam. He was listed in the registry at the wall as being from Georgia, but another source show him as living in Florida. I also have found a reference to a Pennsylvania High School year book. If anyone can provide me with any information on his history, I would be eternally grateful.

Thank you.
Jeff Spurlin
Newport News VA

Hi, Carl,

It's a "voice" from the past. Check out the 1840 census for Hardeman County, TN. There is a Berry Spurlin married to Millie Marler. My grandfather's name was Robert Berry Spurlin. (He would have been Berry Spurlin's grandson).

Berry and Millie have children in the age ranges of William Rufus and Jane. Could their father's name have been James Berry? Millie could be Amelia Sprulin Hooper in the 1850 census in Hot Springs, who then married several more times.

Talmadge Cleveland Spurlin was married to my Dad's (Ralph Spurlin per census of 1930 she listed Talmadge as his father but when I was 13 I found out he was not Dad's birth father) Mom, Rebia (maiden name unknown).

We lived in Quarrier, WV, where my Mom, Atherine (Lavender) Spurlin still lives. She said they didn't 'talk about such things' when I ask her questions about the family.

When I was small we visited a sister, Sue (called Suzie) Thompson in South Charleston, WV.

He had a daughter, Gracie, that would come visit - she lived in IN.

Know little about the family. Have some pics of Talmadge and would like to know more about him. He was a very kind and gentle person.

Peggy (Spurlin) Coffey - 253.472.0136

Twice-A-Week-Leader
Princeton, Ky.
November 10 1908
Tuesday

A letter to Rev. R W Morehead states that Mrs. Ida Porter Spurlin, wife of the Rev. J. H. Spurlin, died last Thursday night, November 6, at her home in Berryville, Arkansas.

Mrs. Spurlin was reared in Lamasco, and is well and fondly remembered by many of our readers in Caldwell and Lyon counties. . She had been sick since last May. Rev. Spurlin has a very deep sympathy of his many friends throughout this section of the state, where he held pastorate of many churches. At one time he was pastor of the Eddy Creek and Lamasco churches, and he and his family are, of course, well remembered by our people.

Hi, Carl,

Just checking in to see how you are doing on your brick wall. Mine is still standing with hardly a chink in it. I have found some information indicating two Spurlin families in Tenn at the time of James birth, and census info listing a son in each of them. That's where my trail ends right now, but I'm still digging.

Hope your search is going better.

Spurlins from Virginia

the earliest Spurlin ancestor i can find for sure is Jesse Spurlin(g), who was born in Virginia in 1764. i have, however, found some much older Spurlins, also in Virgina. the oldest i can find is Jeremiah Spurlin, born around 1680, his son Jeremiah, born in 1704, and his children, Zachariah, Sarah, Thomas and John. i have to believe that my Jesse fits into this family somehow, but i can't seem to find the missing piece to the puzzle. if anyone has any insight, i'd be very appreciative. Jesse married Sarah Peters in 1785 in Hampshire Co., Virginia and died in 1813 in Ft. Meigs, Ohio if that helps.
thanks! :-)
mike c
mito0@yahoo.com

The info I’ve found on Samuel seems to indicate he was married twice – and this what I’m still trying to decipher.

If you’ve found anything that you can share, I’d appreciate the info, too!

Also, from Clay County I'm trying to research the Gross family.
