I'd be a fool to turn down an offer to help. The problem I'd like to solve is the origin of the Richard Brindley Spurrier who married Eliza Spurrier. I've proven he isn't the plain Richard Spurrier who married Elizabeth, also resident in Morgan Co., OH in the same period.
A Henry Brindley of Jefferson Co. sold property in Morgan Co. to my guy in 1819, giving his full name. A Catherwood married a Brindley, same period. Eliza called John and Zilla Catherwood aunt and uncle; I'm not sure why. I'll appreciate any leads on the connections bet. the Spurrier, Catherwood and Brindley families. I think there's a MD & PA path in there too.
I'm sorry but I don't recognize the Lot, Benjamin & Thomas you mention. Please give me more info. The Spurriers who lived in Marysville, right outside of Columbus, are in my line. Please reply to me at ljspurrier@gmail.com. Thank you!

I very much welcome your kind offer to help. Finding the Brindley connection was a breakthrough for me, but now I'm challenged to find out more about the Brindley-Spurrier connection. The Henry Brindley who lived in Warren Twp., Jefferson Co. may have been a descendant of an early Quaker, James Brindley, or of a German immigrant to Penn., Heinrich Brindley. The former is more likely. Please contact me at ljspurrier@gmail.com. If you tell me more of the details of where you will be researching, I can narrow my questions to more manageable size. Thank you!

I am in the Columbus, Ohio area descended from the Spurriers in the Jackson County area 1840's (through MD, PA, WV): Lot, Benjamin, Thomas. I am also working on other Spurrier lines and will be in the area you list in your posting sometime this summer. Can you provide additional specific information that would be helpful in that research. Do I contact you directly, or post any results I find?

I now have proof that the Richard Spurrier who married Eliza Spurrier and had sons Martin, Albert and John Catherwood Spurrier was Richard Brindly Spurrier. I figured it out by trying to find out why Eliza called John and Zillie Catherwood her aunt and uncle. They were her aunt and uncle by marriage since Zilla's maiden name was Brindly. Also, Henry Brindly deeded land to Richard Brindly Spurrier (spelled out in full) in Morgan Co., OH. He is the R.B. Spurrier who shows up in all subsequent land records there. Now I need to know if this Henry was R.B.'s grandfather or uncle. He was from Warren Twp., Jefferson Co., OH, same place where Richard and Eliza married. Note: this Richard is NOT the one who went to Iowa. Inquiries and help welcome.

Hi, I'm also related to the Spurriers. My Gt grandmother was Ellen Gertrude Spurrier, presumably sister of your James, as her parents were also Thomas Spurrier and Mary Sheldon. Thomas was born in Walsall in 1820. His parents were William Spurrier and Maria Elwell (she was part of the Wednesbury family famous for the town's ironworks) William's father was also named William, he married Mary Westley. That's as far as I go back on the Spurrier side, but I go a lot further back on the Elwell side.
Hope this helps
Regards, Ann

They probably lived in the Elkridge area.
I am an authority on the Israel family. I am writing a descendancy for the family of John Israel, Gentleman (1647 London - 1723 MD). Ruth was his granddaughter. I have spent the past 30 years working on the Israel family, and am just now starting on the many female lines that are still unknown to me. I am in hopes that someone can stear me to one or more Spurrier genealogies that will connect me to Ruth and her descendants. I am looking for an easy jump start, but would want to confirm all data. I am not very interested in data that can not be verified.
Rob Israel

Carroll Chronicle, Carrollton, Carroll County, OH, January 17, 1913

Al Wagner received a telegram announcing the death of James Spurrier of Ophir Colorado. Word was returned to send the body to Malvern for interment. Mr. Spurrier lived many years in Perry twp. where he worked at farming and carpentering with the late Isaac Wagner. He followed Wm. Crim and Dr. Kirby to Colorado in 1880 to prospect for silver. He was presumably well-to-do, as he owned seven small houses in Ophir and served two or three terms as commissioner of San Miguel county. He has no immediate friends living. Mrs. David Eckley of Malvern is a niece. Other nieces live in Perry.

(volunteer post, death notice was on the same page as my gg's obit.)

I'd like to get the word out that the Richard Spurrier who married Eliza Spurrier (#70, p. 24) was not the man of the same name who married Amy Barrett (#77, p. 47) and went out to Iowa. I have proof in several different forms. I'm very frustrated because I reported this to the people who posted family trees on Ancestry.com showing this erroneous information, and two years later it's still there. It all stems from errors in the data the Hamlins collected and printed without verification.
Anyone is welcome to contact me.
Re: Correction to the Hamlin book

Rob, I'm not able to to be of real help. There's only one Spurrier genealogy to my knowledge, the Hamlin book, and it's very uneven in reliability. On p. 8 it has Joseph Spurrier, b. 10 July 1764, son of Green and Avis (Leek) Spurrier, marrying first, date not given, Sarah Israel, then in 1817 Catherine Rankin. On p. 24, with reference to the very same Joseph, it has the wives listed as first Eleanor Davis, second Catherine (Stubblefield) Rankin. The book lacks footnotes. or sources. I checked the online info of a guy whose research I respect, Duane Spurrier, and his notes say "some confusion exists" as to the wives. Elsewhere on Ancestry.com In the "Maryland Marriages" file, I find Joseph Spurrier m. Frederick Co., 9 Apr 1789, Eleanor Davis.
Did your Sarah Israel live in Frederick Co., Md.? I wonder if she could have married a different Spurrier. Maybe more research in archives there might help. I believe there's a local expert, Donna Russell, editor of "Western Maryland Genealogy." You might try contacting her. Sorry! Laura

SPURRIER, JUNIOR JAMES - Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient WW II

SPURRIER, JUNIOR J.

Rank and organization: Staff Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company G, 134th Infantry, 35th Infantry Division. Place and dare: Achain, France, 13 November 1944. Entered service at: Riggs, Ky. Birth: Russell County, Ky. G.O. No.: 18, 15 March 1945. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy at Achain, France, on 13 November 1944. At 2 p.m., Company G attacked the village of Achain from the east. S/Sgt. Spurrier armed with a BAR passed around the village and advanced alone. Attacking from the west, he immediately killed 3 Germans. From this time until dark, S/Sgt. Spurrier, using at different times his BAR and Ml rifle, American and German rocket launchers, a German automatic pistol, and handgrenades, continued his solitary attack against the enemy regardless of all types of small-arms and automatic-weapons fire. As a result of his heroic actions he killed an officer and 24 enlisted men and captured 2 officers and 2 enlisted men. His valor has shed fresh honor on the U.S. Armed Forces.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Johnson City, Tennessee
Cemetery: Mountain Home National Cemetery

Born: 1922 Russell County, KY

Died: 1984

Source, additional information and cemetery monument photo:

http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_pz/spurr...

Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junior_J._Spurrier

Note: This is not my ancestry. Via Lucinda Moore --> Thomas Morris Spurrier --> Merrill Davis Spurrier --> me. My brother is William Warner Spurrier II. I guess that makes me a cousin-type? I have been able to connect the Spurriers back to the middle 1600s (although the data are weak back there).. We are displaced Marylanders. Want to communicate more?

Re: SPURRIER'S TAVERN

Spurrier's Tavern was located on the old road between Baltimore and Washington. It was located in Elk Ridge Landing (now Elkridge, MD), and near the Waterloo area. One of my ancestors was born in the tavern in 1802. We, too, tried to find the location, but I think a superhighway goes through the area now. Alas. The tavern was a toll-gate inn and was important in the Revolutionary War as a supply center - the owner, William Spurrier was apparently recognized as "The Old Patriot." The 1800 census for Ann Arundel County was posted in Spurrier's Tavern.

Hi Cuz...Would gladly exchange info on Uncle Jims family. I never ment him nor his wives or children. No contact was ever made. I can only remember 2 times of my Mom seeing him after I was born. Once Aunt Ethel, Mom and my brother went out to see him and Trena and another to attend his funeral. I know nothing of Uncle Jim Spurrier's family and would love to know. There were 15 children in the Brown family and 5 in the Spurrier family so it is quite extensive. I have only researched my line from the book "Spurriers in America".

Colene
I get confused between 176 and 175 that why I use the roads old names. I'm a visual,so I go by landmarkes. This is especially true in an area I've know all my life. I never remember a Historical in front of the Holiday Inn or the house that was there before. The roads have been changed since 95 was built. I know there has always been a sign in front of the Waterloo Police Barracks[Old Building] on Rt.1. I had always been meaning to read it. It's a Historical White Sign with black edging and letters. You may have to park up the road at the Motel and walk down. Remember,it is the Maryland State Police and a working station. Post if you ever found it. Beverly Bounds Davis

Spurrier's Tavern was on Rt.1 at Waterloo. The Sign is in front of the Waterloo Police Station. My gr. gr. gr. grandmother was Priscilla Spurrier. She married Nathaniel Young 7 Jun. 1796. The sign is in Howard County but it was original part of Ann Arundel Co. till 1851. The sign is on the north side of Rt.1 after Waterloo Road ,Rt.176. I went to Waterloo Jr. High in the 1950's and school up the road in Elkridge before that. There is a websit, I looked up William Spurrier Maryland b.1740. The Tavern was at the cross roads for Baltimore, Washington, and Annapolis. There,s a Truck Stop on the northbound side of Rt.1 before Rt. 176. There was a Hoilday Inn on the southbound side of Rt.1 before Rt.176[ Waterloo Road].I lived in Howard Co. for 56 years and Maryland for 64 years, also all my families lived in A.A. Co. before 1851 and after. Beverly Bounds Davis
