I have Robert c13 Mar 1814 Gt Torrington, son of Henry Squire & Grace, Wheel Wright. I think they are the Henry & Grace from St Giles who moved to Gt Torrington. Their first child Frances appears to have been bap twice - once in St Giles in July 1800 and again in Gt Torrington in Nov 1800. Henry's cousin John Squire who m Sarah Abbott appears to have done the same thing at about the same time, and both families lived in Well St, and were perhaps in business together? It's significant because 3 of Henry & Grace's children married 3 of John & Sarah's children: Henry (b1809) m Mary Squire 1832; Robert (b1814) m Jane Squire 1835; and Mary Anne (b1820) m Robert Squire 1841.
The immigration record for the David McIver 1853 has Robert's parents as Henry & Grace, father living at Torrington; and Jane's parents as John & Sarah Squire, both living at Torrington. I believe they are the couple in Battersea in 1851 with dau Grace aged 10. I think Grace is the same person described as Elizabeth on the immigration record.
I have Robert who married Rahel/Rachel Risdon as the son of John Squire & Sarah Abbot c10 Nov 1819 Gt Torrington. He married (1) 12 Jan 1841 Gt Torrington to Mary Ann Squire, dau of Henry Squire & Grace Vodden c20 August 1820 Gt Torrington. They are living with his parents in 1814. He's a widower in 1851 in Hatherleigh & Rachel Risdon is in nearby Fishley.
Cheers JD

Hi, Henry and Grace did not have a Robert born 1814, this was William and Sarah's child however he died age 5 months, another Robert was born to William and Sarah in 1818 but I have him married to a Rahel, (this could be wrong).
Do you have any idea when Robert married Jane.
regards john

Robert Squire b1814 (son of Henry Squire & Grace Vodden) and his wife Jane Squire b1817 (dau of John Squire & Sarah Abbott) (2nd cousins I think) immigrated to Sydney, Australia in 1853 onboard the 'David McIver' with 2 children (Elizabeth aged 12 & Fanny aged 2). Robert is described as a Sawyer for the Railway. I haven't been able to trace them after their arrival.

I think I have more information for you, Darrell. Your information about the Squier family being in Placer County, CA was the clincher.

I believe I have photo(s) of Abbie Squier from my grandmother's photo album. It is currently notated simply as "Young girl, photo engraved Dutch Flat, CA". Dutch Flat was a site located about halfway between Sacramento, CA and Donner Pass, CA, off of I-80, I believe. I believe I have also found photos for George Squier.

Also found a listing for George Squier as a registered voter in Placer Co., CA in 1890. And finally a biography of George Squier can be found at "A volume of memoirs and genealogy of representative citizens of northern California:" published by Standard Genealogical Publishing Company, Chicago, ILL. published in 1901.

Send an email to me at dwheeler (at) ipns.com for the Webshots photo for what may be Abbie Squier.

additional info.- The Hills family mostly of Ct. migrated to NJ very early. The progenitor William Hills was in Roxbury 1632, rem to Hartford 1639, he d 1683 Hartford,Ct. His dau Sarah m John Ward (the Turner) one of the founders of Newark,NJ 1666. William Hills names wife & 11 children in his will dated 25 Feb 1683 Hartford so the NJ & Ct connection is there between Hills. In NJ the Ward's & Squier's are allied families. There is even a book written Ward & Allied families by Marjorie Montgomery Ward which includes Squier.

The Tombstone reads A. H. Squier not conclusive proof that his name was Amasa & not Amizi. They are found in Toledo,Ohio in the 1880 census residing with their dau Amelia. His name on the census reads "Emze". The given name Amizi was more common than you think in the 18th century.Especially NJ. None of the census yrs actually read Amasa. I am certain he has a nephew Amizi Squier who has the same problem in the census spelling Amzy & Amgy.

The Tombstone actually says "A.H. Squier" so this is not conclusive proof that his name was Amasa. The "H" I am certain is for Harris the wife of Jonathan b 1785 NJ was Phebe Harris. Probably a near relative of Lydia Harris who m 12 Sept 1791 Hanover,Morris,NJ., Simeon Squier. Lydia Harris was Bapt & Confirmed as a adult also at the Madison church 15 May 1808.

Does the Tombstone actually read Amasa? It is possible that Jonathan is the father of Tyler. He would have been age 51 when Tyler was born. I assume Amasa is also his son. There would be a 24 yr differnce in age there. That is large but still possible.

I believe that I have found a church record on Jonathan. There was a Jonathan Squier confirmed at the Madisdn Presbyterian church,NJ 25 March 1814. dismissed 1817, wife Phebe Harris. There is no other Jonathan of age. With little doubt a descendant of Jonathan Squier of Squier Town.

Tyler is likely the son of Amizi which I believe is correct rather than Amasa. Amizi was relatively common in NJ c1800. Jonathan is certainly old enough to be father of Amizi.
Here's an update with more detailed information. In the 1850 Canandaigua, Ontario County, NY census I found:
Amizi H.
(or Amzi, Amasa) age 31 M Painter b. NJ
Sarah I. age 38 F b. NJ
(dob. c.1785)
*Tyler age 14 M b. NJ
(dob. c.1836)
**Henry S. Squier is my g-grandfather
*Not sure of the relationship to each other or my family.

On the same page
Samuel Squier age 61 M Shoemaker b. NJ
(dob c.1789)
Lucy age 51 b. NY
Don't know if these are related to my family but it seems logical since there are two shoemaker occupations and the NJ connection.

Do you have any information on any of the above. Appreciate your help.

Carol Gilbert

My great grandparents lived in Canandaigua, Ontario County, NY. In the 1850 (?) census for Canandaigua, there was a Jonathan and Tyler listed living with A.H. Squiers, wife Sarah. Both Jonathan and Tyler were born in N.J. Jonathan was about 65 and Tyler about 15 - I have the exact dates at home and will get back to you. Trying to establish where A.H. was born and who his parents were. His name appears to be Amasa and his wife is Sarah Hills. She was born in Connecticut.

Any information?

Thanks, Carol

Amasa (or Amzi/Amizi) was my g-g-grandfather. I, too, found Tyler in the 1850 Canandaigua census living with Amasa's family. Amasa and Sarah's (Hills) son Henry was my g-grandfather. Always wondered about Jonathan and Tyler who are listed in that census. Thought Jonathan might be Amasa's brother, therefore Tyler would be a nephew. I see that Bill Johnson has also contacted you. He provided me with MUCH information and will do the same for you, however, we cannot really prove that Amasa and Jonathan are brothers, or how they are related. Bill also has Tyler, in one of the lists that he sent me, as one of Amasa's sons but I disagree with that theory. Feel he is Jonathan's son, grandson or ?????

I do have some other information which I would be glad to share with you regarding Tyler and Harriet if you would like it, let me know - Harriet's will, etc.

Also, if you have any further information, especially on Amasa and/or Jonathan, PLEASE send it to me. Thanks for Harriet's maiden name - Day. Any little bit that I can add is appreciated.

Keep in touch.

Carol Gilbert

Amizi's name is actually Amasa and he and Sarah are buried in Michigan along with their daughter Amelia and her husband, Albert Fay. The last NY state location I have for them is the 1870 East Bloomfield census which lists the three of them, Amasa, Sarah and Amelia. Just recently found their burial site. My paper work is at home and details have left my brain!!! Let me work a little further on this and get back to you. Why do you think Jonathan isn't Tyler's father? I know their is an age difference, but it is certainly possible. I had my last child at 44!!! Woops! He's a great kid! Keep in touch. by the way Henry is Henry S. not G. - my g=grandfather.

Carol

His son Henry S. was my g-grandfather and his daughter Caroline was my grandmother on my father's side. Henry lived in Canandaigua NY with his family. My grandmother moved to Buffalo and married there. I do have some information on Tyler and Harriet - burial place, etc. Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks - Carol G.

We're interested in perhaps starting a dialogue with persons interested in the same. thank you, Carl Diffenbaugh, Naples, Florida, USA cdiffenbaugh@yahoo.com or mdiffenbaugh@live.com

Jonathan Squier, my 3 gr grandfather I believe is Tyler's
father. Tyler is my 2 gr grandfather. He and Harriet Day
Squier were the parents of an infant that died either at
birth or shortly after, George, I think they had a son named Frank, and Clara A Squier, who was
born in Il. Clara married Henry J Larner and they had several
children. Their daughter Hattie, my grandmother, married
Robert C Record and had one child, Elizabeth, who was my
mother.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I think that Jonathan was Tylers
father. Someone else thought that it didn't fit. Thank you
for the info. Mary

I am researching Tyler Squire or Squier born abt 1835 in NJ. He was living in Canandaigua NY in 1850 and lived in Victor NY with wife Harriet Day. In 1850 there was an Amasa Squire age 38 and a Jonathan Squire age 65 in the same family. Any ideas about Tyler?

Janet,

I have attached a copy of the photo here. I have a couple other photos of the Squier boys, one of which has (I think) Asa, John (my ggrandfather) and either Daniel or William.
I also have a note of condolance dated 2/4/1936 from Anaheim CA. for my grandfather's passing from "Uncle Asa and Cousin Ethel" and article on Asa's death from Anaheim CA paper. Hit by car at age 90. Says he left two daughters (Mrs. AJ Strayer of El Paso, TX and Mrs. DH Van Meter of Anaheim, CA) and one son, Ralph M. of Anaheim, CA.

William Riley is Daniel's brother who did marry Mary Elizabeth Babbitt. Someone posted them as Daniel's parents a long time ago, and it took me awile to figure out that it was not correct.
Rennie

Betty,

I have attached the photo as a JPEG file. Let me know if that works for you. If not, I can send you a copy or email privately. I also have some other photos of my great grandfather John Squier with a couple of his brothers one of whom may be Asa. I also have some cards from Asa's store.

Do you have any info about John and Asa's father Daniel?

Rennie
