The Finley (Fred) St Clair you have information on is in my direct family line. After coming to OR he married a Della Wyrick and had another family. I do have information on that line of the family. The only son born in that line is my Grandfather, Herman Arthur St. Clair, born in Ione, OR, in 1890. I have pictures of him, some of his sisters and the blacksmith shop his dad owned. If you would like this information I am willing to share. You can e-mail me at kjtazz_j50@hotmail.com. As a side note Finley and Herman were supposedly founding members of the Pendleton Round Up. While Grandpa was alive he had standing reservations and free entry to the rodeo every year. Grandpa, Herman, would not talk about his dad and say why do you want to know about him? He was a mean old man! Somewhere along the line we must be loooong loooost cousins. Karla in OR

Actually Finlay was born in Prince Edward Island. He moved to Maine and married Ida Lydia Gould. They had two children, daughters Edith and Jennie.
Ida died at 19 yrs along with Jennie. Their grave stones are beautiful.
Finlay (later Fred) moved down to live with his brother John in Mass for a bit (Finlay left his daughter Edith with her Gould grandparents to raise) and then headed west where he married again.
Finlays parents were George and Catherine (Bain) Sinclair from Scotland
my email is fsneikirk@hotmail.com if you want to compare info

Yes, Finlay Cook St. Clair is the one that went to Oregon. I have tons of info on the family. Finlay went by Fred and changed the spelling of the last name from Sinclair to St.Clair when he came to the states . He was born on Prince Edward Island 1846 to George and Catherine (Bain) Sinclair. George and Catherine were from Scotland.
Finlay was a Blacksmith. One of his children was Jennie but she was not married to a Charles (in fact he had another Jennie with his first wife Ida but bothe wife and child died)
I know of no Alexander, Charles and Horace George but the other children of George and Catherine were
Catherine b 03 Aug 1836 Scotland d 08 Aug 1849 PEI
Ann b 20 July 1838 Scotland d 16 April 1889 PEI
Johan b 14 Jan 1841 Scotland d 21 Jan 1923 PEI
George b 1843 PEI d 05 Aug 1865 PEI
Finlay Cook b 1846 PEI died 06 Jan 1904 Portland Orgeon
John b 08 May 1849 PEI d 06 Aug 1904 Indianapolis Ind. in
Fletchers sanitarium
James b march 1850 PEI d 05 May 1939 PEI He was a teacher, married to Susan Hamill, lots of kids
Robert b 31 May 1854 PEI d 12 Oct 1926 Veedersburg In.
John and Robert moved to Indiana and changed the spelling to St. Clair.
Hi, Did Fred C. aka Finley move to Oregon? I hear there are only 8 original lines of St.Clair, Sinclair and Sinkler (many spellings interchangeable on census as they wrote what they heard) and we are searching lineage for my Dad. We believe there was Alexander, Charles and Horace George in the Northeastern US, through Illinois and to Oregon. Recent DNA is connecting to Wayman, who is in our area, but haven't made a conclusive connection. I believe I've seen a Fred C. in the same area as Jennie St.Clair (Charles wife)near Sherman Co. Or in the late 1800's, early 1900's. Thanks for checking, Kim

His name was John and he lived in Hancock county according to the 1860 census. the last name may have been spelled St-Claire or St. Clair. He married Emma Larson.

Alonzo Nickeson is my great, great grandfather. Family stories say Delia and Alonzo were married in Minnesota and then the family came up to Humboldt, Saskatchewan, Canada - but no one is sure if she came up with Alonzo or Ebenezer or both. My great grandmother, (Alonzo's) [Mary] Emma told me she walked behind a covered wagon with her (2 or 3) younger sisters.. Pearl, and Vena. My gr.Grandmother always called her mothers maiden name 'charpentier', not Carpenter. She said they were french and 'pennsylvania dutch' which I take to mean German. I have a couple of photos, one of Ebenezer and at least one of Alonzo.. I may have more tucked away. Is Julia a Sinclair?

She was born 1940 in Santee and lived there with her grandparents. Her mother was Pansy St. Clair, born 1920. She had 2 older siblings, Thelma and Clifford, who died in the war. Pansy's parents were Joseph and Margaret. Joe St. Clair was born 1895 and passed away in 1976. His mother's name was Mary Mitchell. I still have a lot to sort out...it might be time to speak to my grandmother again.

Re: General Arthur St Clair and Pittsburgh

No but I can tell you there is some sort of connection to President James Buchanan who had his Whitehouse in Bedford. His brother was married to the sister of songwriter Stephen Foster.

I also have records of General St Clair's gravesite refurbishment in Greensburg. I got them fron the Heinz History Center. He was moved to another location of the cemetery and given a new stone. Although some records suggest he was moved only a few to 10 ft from the original location.

Many people in Pittsburgh doubt General Arthur St Clair ever existed so research is tough on this subject. I believe I know where this comes from. The families of the Whiskey Rebellion get deleted from the Allegheny Board weekly. Most likely because of General Harry Lighthorse Lee and his son General Robert E Lee. General Harry Lee was buried at Cumberland Island owned by the Carnegie family. He was later moved to the mainland. Lets face it, the Lee were traidors in Union Eyes and in Pittsburgh, it is still that way.

Alot of people also thought General St Clair was a traidor with his frendship with Benedict Arnold.

You must get through this haze to get anywhere with theses families.

Hi,I noticed that several of the children of Jeremiah Emmons, (born in 1830, New York, died 1910 Oklahoma)had middle names of St. Clair. Jeremiah had four different wives, yet children of each wife had this middle name. I did not see any connection in the up line that I have and am wondering if anyone knows of any links between these two families. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you. Just grasping at straws.

Thomas Crawford SINCLAIR / ST CLAIR PROVEN by DNA testing

It has now been proven that the Thomas Crawford Sinclair who migrated to and died in Arkansas is NOT a son of Isaac Sinclair and his wife Letitia Douglas and is not descended from Alexander Sinclair of Prince William County VA. A direct male descendant of Thomas C Sinclair has taken the 67 marker DNA test for the Sinclair/St Clair project and his DNA does not match any of the direct descendants of Alexander.

Steve St Clair who is part of the Sinclair DNA project is attempting to place the Arkansas Thomas Crawford Sinclair. This now questions if Isaac and Letitia's son Thomas' middle name was actually Crawford or was it just assumed because of the Arkansas Sinclair/St. Clair family.

Descendants of the Arkansas family migrated into Texas.

I am seeking people who have informtion on Elizabeth ST CLAIR b; 1805 and lived in Boteourt Co., Virginia. She married about 1823 to Bartley SNODGRASS and had a daughter Maranda / Miranda / Marinda about 1836 who married on 24 Oct 1852 Elijah LYNCH in Jackson Co., Missouri. Their children include: Nancy Emeline, Amanda C, William R, Henry Albert and Joseph Madison LYNCH. They were born between 1859 and 1867. Since they were married in 1852, there possibly could be children who passed away before the 1860 census.

Would like to talk to anyone connected with the SNODGRASS, ST CLAIR or LYNCH family.

Hi, I am descended from John Charles, Lucy's brother. From stories that have been passed down, I am trying to find out what the family name originally was. According to her, the person that changed the name couldn't go to school or something of that nature, and changed their name so that they could. I am thinking that William who married Sarah Dixon is the one that changed the surname. According to my grandmother who had done some research years ago, the ancestor that changed the name is supposed to have the original surname of Woods. I have not been able to find any documentation to this as of yet. And no one has her research notes that they know of. Other than what she had told them. I am more than willing to share any information that I have with you. You can email me at tazaroo1@yahoo.com.

Some news from research in the National Archives.

First the bad news - the card index to the personal records of officers (WO25 ad WO76) doesn't have a card for him, so finding his file (if it exists) is likely to be hard. If he married while serving, there is likely to have been a record made. Now if he married while on half-pay, perhaps there wouldn't be a record.

Now more not-too-good news. I've checked the Imperial Kalendar for the years 1820-32 and the British Consul in Denmark was definitely not Thomas; it was one Charles Fenwick. I am inclined to believe, therefore, with the many mentions of Thomas being "of the Danish Consulate" that he was Danish Consul in Australia. This might be checkable through the present Danish Embassy or Consulate.

The better news: I worked through the Army Lists for him and here are the results
12th Aug 1803 Ensign, 1st Foot
6th Aug 1804 Lieutenant, 1st Foot
30th Sept 1807 Captain
2nd June 1814 Major in the Portuguese service
25th December 1816 half pay
4th September 1817 Lt Colonel

Evidently he then returned to the Army
29th June 1826 Major in 94th Regiment despite his Lt Col rank in the Army
half pay 9th December 1828
10th January 1837 Colonel unattached on half pay
9th November 1846 Major General unattached

1848-9 List states he has died since the last edition, Major General

Honours:
CB 19t July 1838
KH [Knight of the Royal Hanoverian Guelphic Order]
Commander of the Order of St Bento d'Avis [Portuguese]
Knight of the Order of Tower and Sword [Portuguese]
Medal for the Battle of Nive.

Hart's Army List for 1846 gives some more info on his service: Colonel St. Clair attended the Governor of Demerara nearly 400 miles up the Essequibo River, in 1807, to disperse the Indians who had collected there in great numbers to attack those colonies. In 1809 he was employed on the expedition to the Scheldt; landed on Walcheren and engaged in several affairs with the enemy; also present at the siege and capture of Flushing with the Royals, which was the first regiment that took possession of the town. In March 1810 landed in Portugal, and served in the third division at the battle of Busaco. Commanded four flank companies on the retreat to the Lines of Torres Vedras, in the actions of Pombal, Redinha, Puente de Murcella, Sabugal, and the celebrated movement upon Guarda; also in the battle of Fuentes d'Onor, and siege of Badajoz. In 1812 he was employed organising and drilling recruits for the Portuguese array in Coimbra. In 1813 and 14 he commanded the 5th Capadores, and was engaged, after several hot skirmishes, in |the battles of the Nivelle and the Nive, passage of the Adour, and investment of Bayonne, in which he successfully kept possession of a garden on the left of the position occupied by the allied army during the sortie. Medal for the Nive.

The Danish connection seems OK,one of the references states that Thomas Staunton St Clair was a Danish consul at some time.

I think the best bet long-term is to hope that his military records have survived in the archives - I now have him on my hit-list for my next visit to the National Archives, and just have to hope that he's less elusive than some other officers I've tried to chase!

I don't think my Anna Unee is Sir Thomas' daughter. For several reasons. Firstly she was born in 1846, the same year Sir Thomas died at age 62. Secondly, on her marriage certificate her mother's name is listed as Colina Campbell, not Caroline Woolridge and place of birth as Kobenhaven, Denmark. Please tell me I'm wrong though. Would love to have finally found the St.Clair family.

Here's the info from the Gibraltar website, not sure how much it helps:

of 50th Foot, according to family records. The only likely candidate is this man, Major in 1817 and on half pay from 1816 (sic), from the Portugueze (sic) Service.

Gentlemen's Magazine gives an obit, d of d and age at d.

One notable military artist was Major - General Thomas Staunton St. Clair of the 94th Regiment of Foot (formerly the Scots Brigade). Staunton St.Clair joined the 94th Regiment on the 12th August 1803 as a coronet or ensign and was commissioned as a Lieutenant on the 6th August 1804. He rose through the ranks quickly and by 1807 he was a Captain, and made Major on 2nd June 1814. He was seconded to the Portuguese soon after being made Major and remained on the Iberian Peninsula until 1818, rising to the rank of Lieutenant - Colonel in September 1817. Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Staunton St. Clair was stationed in Gibraltar as 3rd in command between 1826 and 1832 before being sent to Malta in 1832. He was promoted to Major -General on 9th November 1846, but died the following year aged 62. Throughout his time in Gibraltar, 6 years in total, Staunton St. Clair’s output of sketches and watercolours was prolific. It seems he was trying to sketch Gibraltar systematically from all possible angles. In his notes on one of his sketches he says, ‘I have now shown all the lower face of the Rock and shall proceed to mount it and try to give some idea of the upper part’. The result is a vast array of views of Gibraltar covering all areas, both military aspects and the life of local inhabitants. His style is rounded and clean lined, his characters vibrant and alive. Although as a military artist he was never expected to draw people, he manages to do this, often including himself in the composition. ... fom the Gibraltar museum website.

Hi there,

Not sure how far you have all come in your research. I am still trying to track down Anna Unee Meade's (née St.Clair) father. Here is the wedding announcement from 1869. It lists her father as Colonel St.Clair of the Danish Consul. Could any of you shed some light on Anna? I've come to a grinding halt.

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/5810506?searchTerm=R...

My St.Clairs were from W. Virginia, as far as I know we did not have any St.Clair relatives living in Topeka. Other names related to my family were Baker,Houston. Thanks for the inquiry

I have a photograph of the grave stone of St. Clair Ross. He is buried in Maplewood Cemetery in Ripley, Ohio . His son, John, John's wife, and several children are buried nearby. The monument stones of all are still very readable.

the Vandergrift manuscript is a collection of newspaper clippings/obits and letters. "The Washington ancestry, and records of the McClain, Johnson, and forty other colonial American families" researcher obviously used this collection (clippings pasted inside an Ohio history/biography publication) to build his story upon. I have been unable to locate (yet) the same info for the St. Clair side of the family, if one ever existed. More than likely, the same Ross family clippings were used during the researchers original interviews with Eliza Ross Glaze Hickman-Vandergrift covering both the Ross and St. Clairs.

i've located this original collection.

laurie ross-sutton
4th great granddaughter of St. Clair Ross
5th great granddaughter of Oliver Crawford Ross
