Abraham Staats (m) Anna King + Abraham Staats (m) Margaret Dubois

My research is uncertain how these two Abraham's are related, but I am certain they are related. I keep finding information that weaves their lives together. If I go to the Abraham Staats house in Bound Brook, NJ, I see in the history secton of the Abraham Staats website (b 1743) married Margaret DuBois in 1770 they had five girls and one son named Isaac. This Abraham Staats married Margaret Dubois in 1770. It states that the son moved to West Virginia (Virginia at the time) and started the West Va branch of the family and his name was noted as Abraham in the West Va records.

Then I research Abraham Staats who married Anna King and I find he was born in Bound Brook NJ in 1750 and married Anna King in 1755 in New Castle, De, later moving to West Va (then Va) and starting the West Va branch of the family.

Is there someone out there that can clear up the mystery of these two Abraham Staats that seem to be woven together?. I would like to know how thay are related.

Thank you
Saundra Staats McLemore

Re: Elijah Staats born 12 OCT 1793

Wife #1 is Sally Marvin, married April 1, 1813. They had 8 children between 1814 and 1825. I don't know if her name was Sarah 'Sally' Marvin Warth or Warth Marvin - or if the 2 names go together.

The 1850 Jackson County census, page 78, #545-550 shows Elijah, age 57 and Anne, age 35. Their are 11 children on this census, ranging in age from 18 yrs to 7 months. I believe all 11 are Anne's offspring but I have not researched this - I am basing it on their ages. I believe Anne is his 2nd wife, Anne Evans, married 1829/1830.

The 1860 Jackson County census (#95-89) shows Elijah (age 66) married to Sarah age (52). I believe this is Sarah Burdette Parsons, wife #3, who married Elijah June 1852. There are 6 children listed. Five are Elijah & Anne's, one daughter is Elijah's & Sarah, and the last is Sarah's daughter with previous husband, ---Parsons.

The 1870 census is a little perplexing. Elijah married wife #4 Mary Jane Davis in 1868. He names her in his will written 16 May 1872, so Mary Jane was alive in 1870. In fact, his death record shows that MJ Staats was the informant. But I don't see her on the 1870 census. There is a Mary Staats listed right under Elijah, but her age appears to be 15. Mary Jane Davis's 4 children (surname Davis) are listed on this census in Elijah's household.

Hope this helps some. Maybe you can fill in some of my blanks
From my understanding, Harold's book is not completely accurate. I too am a descendent of Abraham and Anna Staats, and through their son Elijah. I went to Evans, West Va and Ripley, West Va. and found several books in the library on the Staats family. In the genealogy of the Staats family, I show that Elijah marries three times. The first marriage to Sally Marvin b May 12, 1796 and died April 01, 1813. They had eight children, and I am descended through Wilson, their seventh child. He married Ann Evans the second time and had eleven children. His third marriage was to Sarah Parsons and they had one daughter.
Sincerely,
Saundra Staats McLemore

New Castle, DE Staats families

I am currently in the process of researching and assembling all of the various Staats families from the New Castle, DE area from their arrival there in the early 1700's through the early 1800's. In order to ensure the results are as accurate as possible, I am including only source documents in my findings(i.e. probate, Orphan's court, deeds, etc). If anyone is descended from these families and would like to know if I have information that might be of help to your research, please let me know. Likewise, if anyone has undertaken any original research on any of these families, I would love to hear from you.

My personal DE Staats connection is Jacob Staats m. Sarah ?.
Jacob died about Mar 1783 (Not 1785 as is often listed for this Jacob. The 18 Jan 1785 date is the date the account of the administrators was accepted. However, the administrator's bond was dated 1 Apr 1783 - making the date of death most likely sometime in late March of that year.

According to three deeds I've found thus far, Jacob had eight children. From those deeds, I have been able to identify five of those children as follows:
Jacob, Elijah, Lydia (married Robert Standly), David, unk. daughter (married an Irons).

I have not been able to determine who the other three children are yet, but they were alive at the time of the three deeds mentioned above - two dated 27 Feb 1792 (David Staats to Jacob Staats, and Robert Standly and wife Lydia to Jacob Staats), and the other dated 7 Oct 1800 (Elijah Staats to John Callahan. Hopefully, further research will determine the others.

Chris Staats
Cleveland, OH

In 1870 Elizabeth Staats was living with Henry Staats of Alexandria, NJ. It may be that Henry and Rhinear are brothers. They come from the same town, born around the same period (1804 vs 1814), and obviously were close. Wanna bet.

I would like to find out there ancestors as well.

Denis Staats Wilson
deniswilson@roadrunner.com

I believe that Henry is my 3rd G-grandfather. My paternal grandmother (my father was Frank Staats Wilson) was a Staats on her mother's side. Her mother was Cora Staats, whose father was Joseph R Staats of Tawas, Michigan. I believe that he was one of the sons of Henry Staats of Alexandria, New Jersey.

More tentatively, I believe that Henry was a brother of Rhinear Staats. And that their father was related to the Bound Brook, Somerset County Staats's. They have an early history in New Amsterdam (c. 1640).

Denis Staats Wilson

Elijah Staats born 12 OCT 1793

I am interested in determining the correct name of the first wife of Elijah Staats, who was born at Fort Boreman, now Parkersburg, West Virginia. Harold Staats, in his "Genealogy of the Staats Family", published in 1920, shows the name as Sally Marvin. I have since seen it listed as Sally Ann Marvin, Mary Sally Marvin and, most recently as Sarah Warth. Are there any records that would confirm the name? Whoever she is, she is my g-g-g-grandmother through her son, Mark Staats.

Hi Connie,

Thank you so much for writing. You made a very clear and concise posting about Elijah Staats. I have gotten so caught up in the Anderson research that I skip back and forth between all of them. I haven't worked specifically on Nancy Anderson and Elijah Staats in a few months.

I am grateful that you quoted some work by Juanita Burke. She made a family history book in (about) 1990 for one of the historical societies in WV, either Jackson or Wood. I have a copy of that and am using that to base my research on. It has been very helpful.

I also see that the "Jackson County Past and Present" is currently available from the historical society. I have an envelope ready to send my check! Thank you for the offer of sending copies, but I think this book is one I should have in my library because of how instrumental the Andersons were in Wood county.

As you mentioned in your message, I do see pretty good documentation that Nancy Anderson, daughter of Edward Anderson, married James Coleman. James Coleman died young, yes, and James and Nancy had a son Thomas Coleman. I don't understand the reference to a second marrige of Elijah Staats to this Nancy Anderson, though. All references to Thomas Coleman, the son of James and Nancy Anderson, say that he was orphaned quite young. Thomas was raised by a maternal uncle. I don't know which one.

There are two Nancy Andersons - one is a sister of my Peter Anderson and she was born in 1779. Peter was much older than this sister, and he himself had a daughter Nancy Anderson about 1785. So, there are two Nancys, born only a few years apart, and I still don't know which one married Elijah Staats.

I am slowly working on finding documentation for each one. Thank you again so much for writing. Because of your message I went looking for the Jackson County book and see that it is available for sale.

I hope I don't come across too confusing with this.

Laura

Elijah STAATS & wives, ALKIRE?, ANDERSON?

Hello Staats Researchers,

I am researching my husband's Anderson ancestors and I am totally confused about an Elijah STAATS who married Nancy ANDERSON (1810-?). Elijah is referred to as Elijah STAATS, Jr., but his parents are listed as Isaac and Mary (HANNAMAN) STAATS. ?? This Elijah STAATS is shown as being born about 1790 and died 1849 in Wood County, Va, later Wood County, West Virginia. There is no mention of Margaret ALKIRE.

This Elijah and Nancy Anderson STAATS are supposed to be the parents of:
John H.
Peter A.
Alexander M.
Eliza A. (m. William L. BALL, abt 1847)
Theodore V. (m. Elizabeth HALL)
Isaac

There is another Nancy ANDERSON (1779-1804), an aunt of the one mentioned above, who married James COLEMAN (abt 1775-?). I have also seen reference that the Aunt Nancy ANDERSON COLEMAN married Elijah STAATS... perhaps after she was widowed from COLEMAN. I don't know, doesn't seem right. Any help sorting through this would be very much appreciated.

I would like to know:
1. What are the birth and death dates of the Elijah who married Margaret Alkire? Who are his parents?
2. Was the Elijah Staats who married Margaret Alkire married to anyone else?
3. Who are the parents of the Elijah Staats who married Nancy Anderson (1810-?)?
4. Was the Elijah Staats who married Nancy Anderson (1810-?) married to anyone else?

Thanks a bunch,
Laura

Re: Valentine Staats

The Valentine Staats you referenced and the other inquiry are NOT the same. I am a direct decendent of William and Mary Staats and have done a LOT of genealogy research on the family. Raymond Staats' sister, Ida, was my great grandmother. William Staats' (husband of Mary) parents were William and Anna. The elder William's parents were Valentine and Elizabeth. Valentine and Elizabeth came to the US in 1837 and Wisconsin in 1843. They brought with them their sons William, Adam and John. They were one of the founding families of Germantown, WI. It was originally called Staatsville. John opened and ran a brewery in Germantown for many years. If you would like more information, email me at crobertsfive@wi.rr.com.

Re: O. Abraham Staats & Rebekah/Rebecca Cox of Harrison Co. VA

Thank you for your reply. This is the closest information I have found yet. The name was spelled STORTS in the tax records? This may be why I have had such a hard time finding anything. It is believed that my paternal ggg grandfather Abraham Staats' father was named Elijah Staats and Elijah was son of Joseph Staats...so it all sounds like it might be right. And Harrison County, VA in 1802 would have been ???
Appreciate your help.

Thanks Connie for the info on the book. I am wondering if this is the only thing in the book about an Elijah Staats? I would appreciate it very much if you could scan the article and send to me via email. I am not sure if the book will be benefit me in my search. The info I am looking for pertains to my paternal ggg grandfather, Abraham Staats (my maiden name is STAATS) whose death cert. states he was born in Harrison County, Virginia (which is currently W VA) in 1802 with his father's name being Elijah Staats who was son of a Joseph Staats. I am not really sure on wives names, except Abraham Staats married Rebekah Cox who was also from Harrison County, VA.
Do you see anything like these names in the book?

Thank you for looking.
A William Staats married Ella Stubbs 3 Sep 1879 in Boone Co, Ind. They would have a dau Kate who died young. Ella was the daughter of John Stubbs and Lydia Eccles. William Staats died 7 Feb 1885 in Thorntown, Boone Co, Ind. I very much need to know his parents. Were they by any chance Oliver P. Staats and Mary Ann Brown?
You may email me directly at RizerK@erinet.com
