Re: Frederick William Stacey

Hi, I know I've come late, but is this any help to you? I've been going through the reports in local papers about Military Service Tribunals (where people could appeal against being conscripted into the army) and this caught my eye: 'West Herts & Watford Observer', 20th July 1918 -(page 5), County Appeal Tribunal - Watford Case - "British Actors Film Company, Ltd., appealed against the Bushey Urban decision respecting Frederick William Stacey (44), Grade 1, carpenter and joiner. It was stated that the company are now largely engaged on films for propaganda work. - Refused and recommended to get 'something' from a Government office and make a fresh appeal." Grade 1 meant he was physically fit and completely healthy. Presumably the 'something' was a document confirming that the company was carrying out important government work and that they needed Frederick's skills. Unfortunately I don't know whether they appealed again or whether Frederick was called up. According to the BFI website, the British Actors Film Company was a production company, "Formed by Gerald Malvern and the West End actor A.E. Matthews" on 18th September 1915, but it ceased trading in 1920.
All the Best, Ray

Had relative Basiliste Calestagne who married Julien Dubuque in Saint Constant in 1848. Believe she had a child prior to marriage - Helene. Have reason to believe this child was also the daughter of a young Micmac who was a traveling salesman of baskets. Would this have been logical? As this was Mohawk area, would there be trading between them with Micmacs?

In 1871 William Henry Stacey married Ellen Chant (my g-grandfather's sister) in Oborne, Dorset. William Henry was the son of William Stacey born 1829 in Trent, Somerset. Wm Henry, also known as Henry, and Ellen had a daughter, Annie,in Yorkshire in 1876 who spent her childhood with her grandparents in Oborne. I can find no trace of WmHenry or ellen after the 1871 UK census. Has anyone any idea what happened to them?
Cheers,
gill

Hi Karen, I don't know if there is a connection as I am not researching this family. My mother married into the Stacey family and so inherited some old photos when her husband passed away, and which I would rather see go to a direct relative.
Good luck in your search. If you find that you are related to this branch of the Staceys, I would be glad to forward to the photos to you.

Hi Pat
Thank you for your detailed respomse to my query regarding Florence Woolf and George Stacey.
Well the co-incidence is quite incredible. There are two Florence Woolf and each married a George Stacey and both had a first daughter named Joan. All lived in the City Road area in St Lukes Parish.
Florence b 1914 was daughter of Charles Woolf b 1885 ( his father Charles b abt 1862. All St Luke born.
The similarity in names of all children I think is quite remarkable.
There must be a link somewhere - must do a bit more digging!!
regards
Ron

My husband's mother was Florence Ivy Woolf, b 26Dec 1919, father Henry Richard Woolf, b 1886, mother Annie Bennett, 1886-1934, we believe she had only a brother, Henry Thomas Woolf, 1924-1981, she married George Stacey b 1911, on 26 June 1937 at St Luke, London, They had a son William but I so far am unable to trace his actual birth, tho I know he married a Linda Brant, My husband lost touch with him years back, I thought the birth/death I found of Joan Florence, 1940-1953 was an unknown child of theirs, do you mean through all this coincidence, she belonged to your branch instead? or if your Joan still alive is it her birth and someone else's death?, the parents names on the birth & death certs tie in with my info, amazing coincidence so far names etc... hard to believe 2 sets of Florence Woolf/George Stacey let alone all in Islington!!.....we don't have exact dates for when Flo split with George & took up with Reg's father, just had the idea William was very young. please let me know if you can enlighten me at all.........regards Pat Burrows.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the clarification. The huge age difference of William Stacey really threw me off. 1847 to 1861, I would have never made that assumption. Now that you say his actual year of birth was 1858, on the 1880 census it was probably supposed to be 1858 rather than 1848, which really makes sense.
Having that first hand connection really helps with putting the pieces together.

Have you ever written a book on the Staceys? I had a Thomas family member who I am also connected with through the Broughtons, he had his book published on a website called Lulu Publishing. I think it's a free service; so basically, it doesn't cost you a penny to have it printed. I know, the researching never ends, but you really have a wealth of information that's very invaluable.

Lisa
Hi Steve,
I am a descendant of Charles Richard Broughton and Mary Rebecca Snell (comes from the German surname Schnell). After seeing your message, I thought I had finally found who William Stacey's parents were, however, upon further investigation; The 1880 census data for William and Mary (Broughton) Stacey shows that William was born about 1847.

The William M Stacey who was the father of Charles Wesley and C Hybard Stacey was born about 1861. On the 1920 Census for Charles Wesley, William M is listed as widowed and 'father' of Charles Wesley. I do not beleive Mary Broughton was their mother. To date I have only found the two children for her, Daniel Fore and Mary A. J. Stacey. That's not to say she didn't have more children, but these William Stacey's are not the same person.

I am still trying to find any census data for Mary Broughton and William Stacey after 1880. Mary died in 1891, and I have not found any records of what happened to William Stacey b. 1847. Mary had two sisters that married Hetherington brothers and went to Texas - I have had no luck in finding them there either. Somewhere on my Hetherington side, there are a few Stacey marriages as well.

Also, I found that Hybard Stacey's wife name was Jahara 'Minnie' Kitchens, and her parents were James J Kitchens & Jahasa? (Jahara) White. I'm not sure where the Broughton would come in for her, unless she was previously married to a Broughton. I have been researching the Broughton's for over 15+ years, and have never run across a name like Gehaza Broughton - I had to look into that one.

I just wanted to clarify for others researching these lines, that William Stacey & Mary Broughton are not proven to be the parents of Charles Wesley & C Hybard Stacey, nor do I believe they are their parents.

I will continue my search for William Stacey's (b. 1847) parents and what could have happened to this branch of the Stacey's after the 1880 census.

I have enjoyed reading all your research on the Stacey's. They connect through my branches on many occasions.

Lisa Luther

Re: Colonel Hibbard Stacey

The parents of Charlie Wesley Stacey and Colonel Hibbard Stacey are William M. Stacey (the M is believed to be Massingill, his mother's maiden name) and Mary Ann Broughton Fore. The source of this information are grandchildren of William and Mary Ann, notably Albert Mason Stacey, Mazie Gandy Stacey (wife of William Wesley Stacey), and Norborn Stacey. At least one great grandson, Albert Shelton Stacey, stated that his grandmother was a Broughton and that his father owned the land she received from her father. I know this land very well as my father's brother purchased the land from Albert Mason and farmed it for many years. Today, it is owned by David Brown whose daughter married my stepson. Until Mrs. Ellen Stacey Sims died, she was my parents' neighbor. She was the widow of Luman Stacey, son of Charlie Wesley Stacey. They maintain that Charlie's mother was definately a Broughton and offer these facts. Mary Ann Broughton died in 1891. Both Colonel Hibbard and Charlie Wesley were born before 1891. The death certificates for both men indicates that their mother was Mary Ann Broughton.
William M. Stacey was born March 04, 1858. His father was John Adville Stacey who was mortally wounded at Chickamauga and died in a field hospital. His mother was Jane Massingill.
The Broughton connection to Gehaza White is through her mother, also named Gehaza or Jehaza. When she came to Alabama, she was married to Mr. Runnels. I believe she was a Cannon before marriage to a Broughton. There is a man named Hubert Broughton who lives in Frisco City who knows this story far better than I.
Perhaps the reason you cannot find more than two children for Mary Ann is because you cannot view the 1890 U.S. Census. No one can. My e-mail address is redkayak@frontiernet.net. I will be happy to share notes on William with you by private e-mail but will not share on this forum.
Steve Stacey
Monroeville

They were married in 1854 Cannington. Are there any links to this family? I would like to find more info if possible. I do not have access to all census records. Anything before 1881 would be a help. They eventually moved to the Walton/Street area and raised their family. Robert was a carpenter.
Thank you Jean Burns
