Any information on Mary Stacks family from Guilford County, NC or Jesse Gray's side would be great.
Also, I had read on one of the threads here that someone had written a book that dealt with the Stacks that were in that area of NC, could someone give me the name and author of that book? I'd really like to take a look at it or purchase it.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
Mandi

Ellen B. Stack

Family story says that Ellen Barbara Stack was the daughter of a Mormon father in state of Illinois (s/b Ohio?). Mr. Stack had 2 wives. Wife #1 had 5 children and #2 had 3 children who were Ellen, Alex and Suzie. When polygamy was outlawed in the state of Illinois (Ohio?), Mr. Stack was given the choice of giving up his second wife or leaving the state and giving up his farm. He committed suicide by hanging. Ellen and Suzie were adopted out. Suzie was adopted by a family in Kansas and Ellen, then 17 years old, was adopted by a Catholic family by the name of Vanderlip. Alex was killed with Custer's last stand.
Ellen's gravestone shows her name as Ella B. Stacks with dob 1 Jul 1855 and dod 10 Jan 1916 (Pleasant Grove Cemetery, VanBuren Co., Arkansas). Ellen married Allen Kingsley in Illinois on 12 Jul 1873. Can anyone confirm this story, Ellen's siblings, natural parents or adoptive parents? I have photos of her. She is my husband's great grandmother.

Thanks,
Liz Palmer
rlpalmer@surewest.net

Yes, very interested. There are several Lintsford and Boyd Coates in Michigan. The one you are referring to is a different line of the family then ours. But still part of our lineage. Thank you so much for responding. There are several of us scattered across the country that stay in touch researching the Coates family. Six of us in fact! All are from different lines of Timothy and Lovinia. Timothy is 6th generation of Robert Coates and Jane Sumner of England (1600's). Kathy Nogle

Hi

I guess we're distant relatives.... David Stack's son Philip had a daughter with Annie Rough, named Ethel Violet, who was my paternal grandmother's mother. David and his family lived in the neighbourhood where I live now...I walk past their 1901 residence (302 Kilburn Lane)almost every day.
Which of David's children are you descended from? I would love to learn of my Irish heritage as well...it's not nearly as easy as finding English ancestors...

best regards,
Sarah Norton (using my partner's ancestry account)

From Ireland to South America

I've got a doozy for those who know their Irish History. Some 2,000-2,500 Irish soldiers were recruited to go down to Portugal/Brazil/Venezuala around 1810-1815. One of those people was my GGGG Grandfather (I'm generation 7, he was 1 so whatever that makes him). His name was Thomas Stack, and he and his wife and two kids went down to South America (location assumed to be Brazil) and eventually came to Miramichi, NB, around 1820. I have them from 1825 onward here in Canada and have a general assumption that they came from Ardfert or Kilflynn in County Kerry ... however, does anyone have any information on the Irish who left to go to South America to help beat on Napoleon?

I'm a UK Stack - my grandfather (John, known as Jack) of that name died in 1980, before I was born, but had several brothers and sisters - the ones I know of are Jet (given name unknown, he was always called Jet), Dan (a priest), Jerry, Ned, Mary and Helen.

All were born in Montcoal (sp?) between Listowel and Tralee in Co. Kerry, Ireland. John/Jack married a girl who grew with the faily and was friends with his sisters named Peggy Mulvhill, my nan. She was illegitimate, raised by her grandparents and as a youngest sister to Maggie (her bilogical mother), Babe, Sarah and Bridie.

This is all the information I have on my paternal family so far, other than the fact I have cousins in New York named Kathleen and Mary and that my great-uncle Ned had some children in Australia whose names I do not know.

Anyone who thinks they may have info on my family, please get in touch!

All born in Ireland, but it doesn't state where. Hope you see this. Best, Carol Ward Dudley

We cannot quite figure out who she married - perhaps one of his brothers but they were never in Virginia. This information is quite exciting and I hope you get this reply after all these years.
