Hi,

I got my gggrandmother's widower's application today and it says her maiden name was Mary Sta?ler. It looks like a "d" but is crossed like a "t" so I'm not sure if it is Statler or Stadler. It says she married George Coleman on the 11th day of March in the year 1842 at the County of Somerset Penna and State of Pennsylvania. Justice of the Peace performing the ceremony was Jacob Kimmell.

Their first child, Margaret was born in PA on the 7th day of January 1843.

From census extrapolation, Mary would have been born about 1821 in PA.

Would this fit in with any of the Stadler's anyone on this board is researching?

Thanks in advance!!!

Martha Menzel
Direct email: menzelgen at sbcglobal.net

Re: Stadler History - Jewish Connections

I had my mtDNA tested and one of my matches is descended from Catherine Stadler of Pennsylvania. From my research I believe we are secret Jews from Spain who fled from the Spanish Inquisition. That would be Sephardic Jews.

Secret Jews often hide their true identity by pretending to be and living as Christians, so the fact that there appear to be many Christians among your ancestors does not prove that you are not Jews.

I have many mtDNA matches who are Jews and many who suspect they are secret Jews.

You may want to research the terms Marranos, Crypto-Jews, Conversos, and Anusim which are various terms for secret Jews.

Sally Walls
Florida

I am going to jump in here. Since 2003 I have been coordinating a Y Chomosome DNA project for the surname STADLER and similar names (Statler, Stetler, Stotler).

There are two common tests available; the Y Chromosome tests the male line and the mtDNA the female line.
With DNA testing it is sometimes possible to find indications of Jewish ancestry but not always. There are some project with Jewish participant and some of the results are the same as other Europeans. In 2000 years there has been alot of mixing in all places.

The name STADLER originated in German speaking lands and most of that name in Austria are Catholic and in German, Protestant. It appear to be the case that the name had many places of origin. The original meaning was something like "a person dwelling near a barn".

In spite of the fact that there are no guarantees you will get the results you might expect, I encourage everyone to consider getting tested. See my website and contact me with questions:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sandrajoneshall/

The Joseph and Mary Stadler I am looking for stated on the 1900 census that they were from Bavaria. They immigrated about 1884 per the census. Mary was 22 years younger than Joseph and she had 11 children with 5 still living. She had a daughter Anna born 1861 in Bavaria (who I am looking for more info on) and a son Joseph born abt 1867 in Bavaria. Joseph and his parents are listed in Price County, Town of Lake in 1900 and Mary, widowed, and son Joseph are listed there in 1910. Does this match any of your information?

Joseph & Anna M STADLER in WI

Am searching for information regarding the family of Joseph & Anna M (may also be known as Mary) STADLER. Census puts there immigration year at 1884. They lived in the "Town of Lake", Price County, WI in the 1900 and 1910 census. In 1900 the mother stated she had born 11 children with 5 alive at that time. A son, Joseph was living with the parents at that time. I believe a daughter, Anna, died in "Town of Lake" in 1891 at the age of 29. She was buried at a Catholic Cemetery in Butternut, WI. Does any one have any clues to this family?

Yes the name Stutler is not found in Europe and Stadler is the most common spelling of similar names. But there is also Stattler and Stettler and others. My mother was a Statler and I have researched similar names for years and started a DNA surname study back in 2003. All the Stutler I have found are from a man who settled in Harrison County in what is now West Virginia. The DNA results suggest a relationship to a STETTLER family. See my website:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sandrajoneshall/Sta...
That is interesting, thank you. I wonder if the name Shtetler might be added to your list. A "shtetler" was a Jewish village in Poland and Germany, so it seems likely a Germanized phonetic variation might be Stadler.

This is a long shot but worth examining:
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=sigl&am...

This Joseph Stadler was born is the USA, since his father immigrated before the Civil War. Your date of 1884 could refer to the wife only. My information gives her birth at abt 1871 in Cooperstown, Wisconsin but the census could be wrong.

There is a page here that describes Stadler as a Jewish name:
http://sallysfamilyplace.com/Koestler/Strazov.htm

I have a ggg-grandfather John Stadler from Bavaria born 1826. His children were devout Catholics and many became priests and nuns, which is typical of Jewish families who converted to catholicism. I have a picture of him and he looks like a Jewish face. Legend has it he was born illegitimate so possibly he was a half-breed also, reason enough to flee to America.

I know nothing of his background in Bavaria.

No, I don't know anything. I have researched my Jewish ancestors extensively and it is maddeningly difficult. Many Jews were forced to convert to Catholicism, and continual pogroms caused many Jews to change their name and renounce their Jewish heritage. World War 2 devastated libraries, synagogues and graveyards. For these three reasons most Jews are unable to make a European connection, much less go back for generations.

A modern solution is DNA matching. Jews of Europe had a distinctive DNA profile and the science is an exciting new method of genealogical research. It's something I'm keeping in mind when all else fails.

Interesting commentary. My middle name is Stadler, which was my paternal grandmother's maiden name. They were from Munich, a.k.a. Bavaria. My grandfather, Frank Stadler came to the US in late 1800s sometime. They were German, not Jewish. They moved to Ironwood, Michigan. Not sure what his trade was, but I think he somehow worked in or around the logging industry. My grandmother, Clara Stadler, not sure of her date of birth, was born in the 1890s I think.

As it turned out, my dermatologist's name is Franz Stadler, of all things, oddly enough. He said his family were actually from Germany if you go way back, but came to the U.S. from Poland. He said many Germans moved into the eastern, somewhat ungoverned countries in the 1600s and 1700s because land was available, and/or inexpensive and I guess they were farmers, as were most people of that era.

We're probably somewhat related if you go far back enough.
