Re: Katherine Stagg, Playwright

Hello Mike - I am responding to a message you had posted over 5 years ago, regarding Katherine Stagg. I have been looking her up as well, because she had once lived with someone I am researching, my great-great aunt, Kate Quinn, an actress who died in 1895 in a Brooklyn hospital. According to Kate's obituary in the NY Times (18 Feb 1895), she had been living just previous to her death in West 16th St, with Miss Katherine Stagg. Years later, in july 1923, Katherine Stagg published an article in the Metropolitan Magazine entitled, "How Would You Like To Have An Actress Darn Your Socks?" I am convinced that this must have been written about Kate Quinn. Katherine Stagg also wrote one about the composer & conductor Emma R. Steiner, called "She Swings a Wicked Baton". Both ladies were among the attendees at Kate Quinn's funeral. I certainly would like to read anything that you were able to write about Katherine Stagg and her associates, if it is available, particularly that "darn your socks" article, if you have been able to unearth it. As a footnote, Kate Quinn was largely disowned by her family for having gone on the stage, with the exception of her brother, my great-grandfather, who was nutty about the theatre. It was to his farm in Ontario that Kate's effects were sent; in fact the arrival of her theatrical trunk at the depot seems to have been the means by which the family learned of her death, two weeks after she was buried. Anyhow, if you receive this somehow, I'd be happy to correspond further. About all I know of Katherine Stagg is that she was born in Paterson, NJ, wrote plays and songs and articles, was involved in the suffragette movement, and was living in the Good Samaratin Home in NYC in 1930, all of which I'm sure is no news to you...Sincerely, Charlie W

My information comes from the 1841 census, when Henry and Charlotte lived in Norwich. The rest is from their sons family bible which was left to me by my g grandmother. I Would love to travel to Carisbrooke to find out more re Alice Stagg, and as I live just across the water from the IOW shouldnt be too difficult.
Henry Stagg and Charlotte Maycock were my gggg grandparents. I am decended from their son Henry (b 1835)
He had 10 children including a Leonard and a Troughear!!! Is it possible this reverend Troughear could be his namesake????? Unfortunately i am unable to help you go further back as this is as far as i have got. I only know that Henry was a customs officer in Kent when he married Charlotte in 1828. If you know any further details i would be enthralled to hear what you know.

I checked out the 1871 Dawn census and noted a Charles McIntosh, age 15, farm labourer residing with Joseph Crowder, age 40, Mary Crowder, age 43, and a daughter, Margaret Crowder, age 17. There was no mention of the parents of Charles McIntosh. Is is possible that Mary Crowder had been married to your gggrandfather William McIntosh earlier and that she had remarried Joseph Crowder? It has been my belief for some time that Mary Crowder's maiden name was Stagg, but I have been unable to prove it.

I based my belief on the following: Ann (Stagg) Paul, my gggrandmother, had been first married to William Somerset, was widowed and left to raise a young son, William Somerset Jr. When William Somerset Jr., stepbrother to my ggrandfather, passed away in 1916 his obituary referred to Joseph Crowder as his surviving uncle. Joseph could not possibly have been a blood relative, so Mary had to have been his aunt by blood. If that was the case, then Mary Crowder had either been a sister to my gggrandmother, Ann (Stagg) Paul, or a sister to Ann's first husband, William Somerset Sr. I have not been able to prove either.

I have noted both Joseph Crowder and Mary Crowder as being burried in Bulter Cemetery, Camden Township just a short distance from Florence and not far from Daniel Stagg's farm just across the Sydenham River. Daniel Stagg, previously of both Grantham Twp. and Dawn Twp, is likewise burried in Butler Cemetery.

If the Charles McIntosh residing with the Crowders in 1871 is William Charles McIntosh, your ggrandfather (1856), then part of the Stagg family puzzle may have been solved. I look forward to your comments and any history you might add.

Please reply by posting on ancestry or by e-mailing me at megobloodline@yahoo.com.

Sincerely,
Merv Howes

Granville's sister, Mary Margie is my grandmother (my dad's mother, she passed away a few years ago). Do you have any information on the Stagg family? I was given so little by my grandmother except for a name and that was about it. I was never able to break through on the information. I have no idea where they came from or anything. My dad has told me small things about Granville & Blanton and their parents Albion & Emma who I believe were living with Mary Margie in Richmond until they passed. I would appreciate the opportunity to trade information with you.

Thanks,
Rebecca

Re: Stagg Surname

My great grandfather Julius John Stagg is one of the brothers of Tennie Stagg (Mary Lucinda Stagg). I have spoken with our cousin Mickey and we have shared some of our geneology findings.

I have a copy of a letter that goes in to detail of how Rev. A.C. (Canada) Shugart and Tennie became married. It states the info is from a book written by Rev. Shugart. The letter includes dates of birth and dates of death for Tennie and for Rev. Shugart as well as their children. There is a list of 9 children included. Tennie was named for her maternal grandmother (Lucinda Miller Anthony).

I also have copies of 2 obits for Beulah Shugart Everett, who was the daughter of William Shugart, who was one of Tennie's sons. The other obit names Rev. Whitfield Anthony who was the grandfather of Tennie Shugart. The Anthony's are the maternal grandparents of Tennie. Another copy with a picture of Mrs. Sam (Beulah) Everette, last name is spelled with an e in this newspaper article about her.

The letter regarding Tennie I found in an unmarked envelope in my parents belongings. The obits and newspaper article was in an envelope addressed to my father Fred Stagg Jr. from Mr/Mrs J.D. Shugart.

If you are interested in any of this info you can e-mail me at kathycraton@adelphia.net. I was born in Rome, Ga and am familiar with the Sugar Valley area. I have more info regarding this also. The grave yard at the Old Methodists Church in Sugar Valley is where some of our relatives are buried.

My Stagg ancestors came from North Carolina. My great great grandfathers name was James C. Stagg married Mary Margaret Anthony. James was born in 1825. I do not have info on my James Stagg going back, only generations that follow, when James moved from NC to Georgia.

Stagg family of Lincoln County, Ontario

I am seeking information on the same Stagg family. My ggg grandfather was Daniel Stagg, whom I suspect may have been related to Mary Stagg of Lincoln County. Daniel Stagg married Jane Isabella Smith on May 29, 1820 at York, Upper Canada and subsequently had their first child, Ann Stagg, in 1822 at St. Catharines. That would have been in the same vicinity as Mary Stagg and her husband Francis Crooks. In 1823 they had their second child, another Daniel Stagg, and it is believed, although unconfirmed, that they had at least two more children, William (1826) and James (1837). By the mid 1850's the four children had moved to Dawn Township, Lambton County and even Jane Isabella was noted as living with her daughter, Ann Paul, in a later census. Son, Daniel, acquired a small property in Dawn Township on the Sydenham River but was shown to have later moved back to Grantham Township near St. Catharines where he died in 1915. He was buried at Butler Cemetery in Camden Township near his property in Dawn Township. I am seeking any information which would link my Daniel Stagg to other Stagg family members in the Niagara area. I am keen to learn the names of Daniel's parents, his siblings and the family place of origin. Any input will be appreciated.

As mentioned earlier, Robert Ashley and Sarah Rhue had a son named Squire Staggs Ashley, and I think the middle name is from a family link somehow.

Gary

Re: Cincinnati OH: Lisette STAGGE (1876-1961) m. 1895 John Sess

Update:

I found Lisette Stagge on the Baltimore passenger list. She arrived on the Liepzig at Baltimore on 9 September 1881 with her parents, Fr. Stagge and Mrs. Stagge, along with sisters Elise and Dorothea.

With this information, I scoured the Cincinnati 1890 city directories and 1900 census and determined that Lisette was the daughter of Frederich Stagge, b. Nov. 1832 near Hannover, Preussen, Germany; he married about 1852 a Maria, b. March 1830. They lived in Cincinnati through the 1900 census after which I lose them. Their children were:

1. William Stagge, b. Jun 1856 in Germany; emigrated in 1873 (first to do so) through NY on the USS New York; was a plasterer in Cincinnati; m. abt. 1878 Charlotte. Children: Amanda (1879); Edwin (1882); Laura (1889). Lose sight of them after 1910.

2. August "Gus" Stagge, b. Sep 1858 Germany; emigrated through Baltimore on the Liepzig in 1874; lived near his brother and parents in Cincinnati; was a plasterer also; m. abt. 1883 Anna, b. Mar 1857 OH. August died before 1910; Anna lived several decades and was still alive in the 1930 census. Had seven children: Albert (1883); Clara (1884) may have married Fred Kaiser and moved to Toledo; Alma (1886); Robert (1888) m. Flora Landmeier; Herbert (1890) m. Daisy; Helen (1892) remained single living with her mother as late as 1930; Edward (1900) m. Rice.

3. ELizabeth or Elise Stagge, b. abt 1864; was on the Liepzig in 1881 with parents and sisters. Might have married Frederick Krouger in 1883; no further sign of her, but alive in 1900 per number of living offspring of her mother.

4. Dorothea "Dora" Stagge, b. abt 1872; was on the Liepzig in 1881 with parents and sisters. Lived with family on Dudley in the 1890 city directory in which she is listed as a seamstress; no further sign of her, but alive in 1900 per number of living offspring of her mother.

5. Lisette Stagge, b. 1874 or 1876; was on Liepzig in 1881 with parents and siblings; m. 1895 John SESS; had three children. After her husband died in 1942, she lived first with her son John SESS, then moved to California to live with her other son Albert SESS; she died there in 1961.
