I have information on My grandfathers Stai family lineage going back as far as 6 generations to Ole Olsen my gr. gr. gr. gr. grandfather born on Smee farm Foberg, Oppland , Norway 29 Dec. 1745 to present lineage. What information would you like from me if any? I will be happy to pass on what I know, the information was gathered by Boyd Leuenberger who is my third cousin, who created the genealogy for Stai families of Minnesota. The families were large, and they went on to create more large families so there are alot of people interconnected , many related if even distantly. Many more beyond this genealogy also possibly distantly related, and probably all from the same area of Norway.
Yes I that is one of the children of Ole C that I don't have information on other than his wife was Evelyn Eastwood. They moved to Minneapolis. Maybe that is why there was no info from either Lyle or Neil I correspond with Lyle frequently. He has a son getting married in July. Lyle was stationed with my son on the same ship in 1981. Isn't that interesting? there is more to the story,]

Dec. 1926 to Henry Oscar , son of Ole Christiansen Stai, son of Ole Christian.I was lucky to meet some of my grandfathers sisters and brothers especially his brother Albert{Montana Stais} and sister Selma {Evansville} for they were top shelf wonderful family type people.I may be the last proud Norwegian from that line, for the children dont really care, at least not yet.....Steve.

The Stai family history becomes more interesting as you look into it. My gr.gr. grandfather was Ole Christian Olsen and was born in Farlibakken farm,Ringsaker,Hedmark, Norway 03 Jan.1828.He married Marthe Olsdatter in Stor-ElvedaL,Aamot,Hedmark, Norway on 09 Apr1857. Records show he was from Farlibakken,Brottum and she was from Stai farms. Vaccination records show their first child Sigrid Dorthea born 08 feb. 1860, and my Gr. grandfather Ole Christiansen born 23 Jan. 1863 in Stormaritstuen , Stai farm Stor- Elvdal, Aamot, Hedmark, Norway. Ole Christian immigrated to the United States in 1867. They sailed aboard the SS Martha out of Christana 30th April. They arrived in Quebec Cananda on 17 June. They traveled to Goodhue county, Minnesota, where they lived until 1870 when they traveled by Oxen on the old Oxen road{roughly where I 94 goes to Fargo} to Evansville, Minnesota where Ole Christian Olsen Stai died 20n Dec. 1906 . I hope you find this interesting, and hope to hear from you soon, Sincerely ;Steve Stai.

Actually there were three Ole Stai. My Gr Grandfather used the last name but is actually buried as Ole Olsen because he never legally changed his last name. In 1920 in Norway all norwegians had to take a last name the patronomic System ended.
However, My Gr Grandfather Ole Olsen of Stai Staeren Sub Farm accross from the stai Farm came to the US in 1870. His wife was Lena Olsen of Nordlien. My Grandfather Ole Stai born in Norway in 1864,and the rest of the family lived first in Evansville with Ole #1 sister Marthe and husband Christian, Marthe and Christian had a Son who was also became Ole C. Stai. Ole married Anna Anderson and had a slew of children. My Grandfather Ole O Stai settled near Otter Tail. Now this makes it worse Ole J. Stai married Ole's other sister Karen. They settled in Zumbrota. Ole J. originally was Ole Johnsen he was a daggarbeider (worker) on the Stai Main Farm. I have photos of both farms.
I hope this helped you. There was another Ole Stai that is younger who settled in Wisconsin. As far as I know I am not related to him. But, all the rest are connected. It took four of us many years with help from Norway to sort this out.

My great grandfathers name was Ole Stai, this family was also from Stai Norway and settled the area around Douglas county Minnesota. I have a geneology of my family. There was another Ole Stai as well , and was in all probability from the same area in Norway, possibly related. Email me and I will share what I know. Sincerely, Steve Stai

Yes, Dorthe and Halsten did have children--eight of them, in fact. They were my great-grandparents and daughter Dorthea was my grandmother.
Virtually all I know about them, and some pictures, are posted on our family history website scheie.homedns.org
Then click on Mykleby family history.

I am also most interested in what you can tell me about Dorthe's ancestry. I did not even know she came from Stai. Nor did I know that her brother emigrated to Minnesota. Where in Minnesota? As you may note on our website, my grandmother Dorthea emigrated to Polk County, Minnesota.

Hoping to hear from you.

David Scheie

Donald,
Your great grandfather, Carl, is brother to my great grandfather, Finn. Their father, Charles Stai, came to the US about 1885. His name, before he changed it, was Karenus Knudsen. The story you refer to is actually this (as told to my mother by her grandmother, wife of Finn): Charlie was a big man and he drank alot. He got into a bar fight and killed a man by throwing him out of the bar. He fled to the US and his wife and children followed a short time later, along with his sister. I can provide you more information if you are interested.
Kristin

I would like to hear more.
What ship did your family come over on? What port did they leave from and what port did they enter.
As we have done a lot of work. The name Stai comes from the Stai Farm in Stai Norway. Some of the people who worked on that farm took that name after they came to this country. Ours is a really funny story.
The fact of the man dieing and taking the name is probably just that a story.
Feel free to email me. And I will fill you in. I have worked on this family for over 10 years. I met several relatives in Norway 2 years ago. Also have pictures of the farm. Stai is a small Town in Hedmark, Norway

His last name Stai my ancestors thew him over board and took his papers so we assumed the name Stai...
Problem is that the only person that actually knew our last name has passed away...If this sounds like your family please post back... Btw this is not an urban legend... this story has been passed through my family for over 100 years

It is POSSIBLE that Ole Stai emigrated from the port of Oslo in 1870. If this is the correct family then they were headed to Quebec and had previously lived in Stor Elvdal, Hedmark, Norway.
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbas...
Some of the US census enumerations show the number of years an immigrant has been a resident - check those too.

Stai Farm or Village in Hedmark near Stor-Elvdal

There is a Stai listed on maps in Hedmark, near Stor-Elvdal (Koppanger is the nearest municipality). My greatgrandfather was a Christiansen who married a women from that vicinity and took her last name when he moved to her village. I guess that was not unusual to take the farm name. When my greatgrandparents moved to Minnesota in the 1880's, they changed the spelling to Stay (I think INS suggested that name).

I noticed there is an English surname "Stay" and also a Dutch surname "Van der Stay". I wonder if there is any connection.

I don't know of a direct connection with your grandfather Ole Oleson Stai and my Stay ancestors who emigrated to Mille Lacs county, MN in the 1880's. My g-g-g-grandfather was Hans Stai from Stai, Norway. They had changed their name to Stai from something unpronouceable - possibly in the first half of the 19th century. The Stai farm name appears in early farm records from the 1300's, so its quite likely that other unrelated families assumed the farm name as their last name. Its possible that Hans Stai or his son Hans had brothers, but that information we do not have.

Your grandfather's father's name was probably Ole also. I do remember seeing an Ole Stai in the Aamot vicinity (near Stor-Elvaden) in the on-line census data. Have you used the Ancestors From Norway website http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/index.html. He has articles explaining the census terminology. That's about all I can suggest. Good luck Shirley

Shirley
I can see how difficult it would be to start from scratch. Finding the right stuff on the internet is not that easy. I'm just beginning to look at the Stai (Stay) information that was collected 20 years ago by a very smart relative. I think it was mostly verbal and letters from a distant relative in Norway.

I know that the 1875 online census is incomplete. If you search it, it is best to use CONTAINS instead of EQUALS for the surname, because it brings up misspellings, etc. I've never checked the parish records for Aamot or Stor-Elvdal but I will one of these days.
