I am probably 10 years too late..you answered a post when my last name was Baker. If you have any info I would love to have it. My Mom, Jewell Staley, is 95 and she talks about "Little Grandma" from Italy. I have heard about "LG" all of my life. The only things that we can come up wiwth is that she wanted Mom to see the flowers in (this is up for interpertation) Sunny Side Italy. I believe they were Genoa, Liguria, Italy.

Thanks, Linda

I don't think I remember the names you are searching for, but will check soon to see if I they are in my info. Hint: Years ago I did speak with Green Lawn Cemetery and they were most helpful looking to see if certain people were buried there and mailed me things. They had a website and probably have more info posted on it now. Jackie

Interesting. Well, I looked up Staley Island and no such place exists anymore. However on Grand Island, NY, just down river from Niagara Falls, is a road named Staley Road that cuts across the island. Perhaps a sign that the island was renamed at some point?

I am still curious about the Phoenix Staleys and where they lived. Also, Frank W. published another book of photographs he took of Philadelphia back in 1910. I'm beginning to wonder if he might not have been from the New York lineage. It would stand to reason that he photographed the cities closest to his origin before exploring further out.

Andrew

Re: Frank W. Staley, Photographer

Thank you for the information. I am not sure that W. Franklin Staley is the same person as we are looking for, although it's a slim possibility that he MIGHT have rearranged his name for artistic purposes. From what we've been able to deduce through published works, Frank W. Staley probably lived in New York City around the turn of the 20th Century before moving on to San Francisco, and then to Phoenix. He published a book of photographs of New York City around 1910, then did some work in San Fran around 1920. His photographs of the Westward Ho were taken in December of 1928. From there the trail ends, but the mystery of who he was continues...

It is also possible that he didn't live in any of those cities, but traveled around making his living as a roving photographer. However, his Westward Ho postcards do indicate he had set up a studio in Phoenix. (see attachment). Unfortunately, he only lists the city on the reverse of the card and not a business address.

As well, this is the first that I have heard the name Staley being associated with early Phoenix and with apparent wealth in the area. If the Staley family lived in a rather expensive house within the city proper, my guess is they would have been located in the Central Avenue corridor (then called Central Street). You wouldn't happen to have an address by chance? I'm curious, because the Westward Ho was built adjacent to the high rent district on Central.

Thanks again :-)

PS:
I did find this curious note: on a web page concerning the book "The Rough Riders" by Teddy Roosevelt (an account of the Spanish-American War), a Private Frank Staley is listed as having deserted his troop at San Antonio TX on May 1st (1898). Wikipedia lists Camp Wood in San Antonio as the training grounds, so apparently Staley didn't feel he was up to the requirements of this volunteer brigade and got out before the fighting actually began (June 1898). LOL. Here's the web address:
http://www.bartleby.com/51/ak.html
L. Staley she lives 712 Cedar Ave, Niagara Falls, New York."

Georgiana says in her letter she was born November 25, 1872 and has 16 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
In case you are still out there. NY State archives has a marriage record for Valtina Staley. She married on August 8, 1894 in Lancaster, NY NY State vvital record number 13887.
With that information you could order a copy of her original marriage certificate - there is a very good chance it will contain the names of her parents, most marriage records in NY of that time period asked that question.
I inherited my great aunt's family notes. She cites, as her source, a letter from Fanny Staley and information provided by Mrs. Frank I. Askons(spelling?) of 14 Brandt Place, Amsterdam, NY.

Sadly, the original letters did not survive intact.
It is entirely possible that either their information was incorrect or my aunt could not clearly read their handwriting. There was more than one Staley line in the area, and this one turned out to be only distantly connected to our family so I did not do further research.

I have the same children listed as you mentioned in your post.

Just a question. I wish I could glance at your book. I'm sure it is super resourceful. Is your Ulrich Stehley any relation to the Staley brothers (Conrad, Martin, & Adam Jacob) of Randolph Co. NC? Or is this a different line altogether?

Thanks,
Jimmie

Some Descendants of Ulrich Stehley 1700-1990

I (hours ago) found that a "Janet" had copied my book above entitled and "Ha,Ha,Ha'd" me as the author stating that she had stolen my book and that I would flip my lid if I caught her. No! But I will sue you for copyright infringement so I suggest Janet that you remove any and all information from your website or this website that you plagiarized. I spent l0s of thousands of dollars and 55 years collecting Staley data and was so proud to print it prior to my mother's death. This was done before computers. You now buy a marked down copy of my book ( or better yet, you got it from a library where I donated them to preserve them for posterity) and you brag that you stole it, on the Internet yet. You ought to be ashamed. I am 77 and merely wanted to get it printed so Staley family members would not lose my years and years of collecting expensive documents, ad infinitum.
Re: Frank W. Staley, Photographer

I do not know. The W. Frank Staley of South Dakota was a doctor. His brother J. Melroy Staley b. 1864 Ohio, died Clear Lake, Deuel Co. SD was the photographer of some fame.
I have checked the indexes of my book " Some Descendants of Ulrich Stehley" published 1990, a genealogy of one Staley Family and find no other suitable Frank, Francis, etc. Wish I could be of more help. He could have been one of those I was not able to trace, i.e. a descendant of one of my Staley Family who did not show up, but I have nothing more.
There was a New York Staley Family of Staley Island, N Y
I have virtually nothing on that family.

Joan Keller

I searched my Staley genealogy as there is a W. Franklin Staley in it, whose BROTHER, J. MELROY Staley was a professional photographer, and whose aunt, Jennie Staley Crow was one of the original settlers of Phoenix, Az. She was invited back to Denver to attend the unveiling of the Kit Carson statue in memory of the pioneers of Colorado of which she and her husband definitely belonged as they were in Denver before 1850. They settled in a magnificent mansion in Phoenix when it was still Indian Territory.
J. Melroys works of photographic art are at the Univ. of Wisconsin. He lived and died in Clear Lake, S. Dakota.
I am wondering if there is not a link of some kind. Hmmmmmmm!

Hi: I have Arcana's genealogy, published in 1990 but sorry to say I have nothing on the genealogy of Reuben Armes. I do however, have their descendants.

Joan Keller

No, I am familiar with the Staley Family of New York and will dig out anything I have on them. I have been on Staley Island and was impressed. I am not aware that they might have come down from Ulrich, but i did not follow up on all of his descendants, just those I found. Wish I could help more. If my files hold anything on them, I will be happy to send it on.

Joan Keller

I see after reviewing what I have, that I found another Solomon(the third)Staley. So this is what I show(no birth date on him, though) Sol III, son of Sol Jr and Susanna Barbara, son of Sol Sr and Margaret (aka Peggy) Butler, son of Joseph and Mary Julianna.
