I have a John Stevens (Stephens) who married Martha Mitchell in 1897 in Clay County Kentucky. The following was verbal family info given to me, so I did extensive research to verify.
Before John married Martha, he had 2 daughters and 1 son.
The daughters were Sylvia Stamper & Eva Stamper. In the
1900 census, Silvia is living with her mother, Sarah, in
Jackson County Kentucky and Eva (aka Evelyn) is living
with her dad, John Stevens and his wife Martha, in Clay County Kentucky.
Eva was born Dec. 1 1888 and Silvia was born May 1895.
Since both daughters were Stampers in the 1900 Census,
it is possible that John Stevens & Sarah Stamper were
never married. Have much more info if you think this
is your family. Thanks, Judy

SO CONFUSED!!!!!! Frazie Stamper!!!!!!

I'm trying to help a friend with her family tree. Her grandmother was Frazie Stamper. She was born 1886 in Kentucky. She married Harve Ison(1877-1954). What we are having a problem with is Frazie's son Jesse James McClure. Frazie had Jesse out of wedlock. She heard Jesse's dad could be named Sam McClure. We have found a birth and death certificate for Jesse but no father is listed on either certificate. If anyone knows this family and has any information I would be so grateful for the information. Thank you.

Crystal

Chris, I'm also researching the Stamper's from Russell Co Va. I'm having a hard time finding any info.
I have James Stamper married Margaret Hurt(this is the main line I'm researching). Their daughter Caroline "Carrie" married Jack Carter. They had Dale, Charles & Fulton. Dale Stamper married Sally Sexton and their children are: Garnet,Matilda,Carrie,Lee,Virginia,Dale,Catherine,Unk,John & Burley.
Some of the info has not been checked out. This info has come from many sources.
Any info you are willing to share on the Stampers would be appreciated. The more info I can get the better I will be able to understand the Stampers.

Thank you
Jack
mocountryboy@nc.rr.com

Debbi,
About a year or so ago, I did a rather extensive analysis of this exact question.
Re: William Stamper, Denver Colorado 1906-1911?

OK, I need to retract my earlier reply. I just spent some time studying all the facts in more depth, and the 1900 census lists Frederick T. . Dec 1882 in IOWA as William's son, but William and Julia have only been married 10 years and Frederick is age 17, so, more research...
re-read the article and I missed the part that said William " He was principal of The Ladies Academy at Peach Orchard , Lawrence county , Kentucky for two years and afterward was elected superintendent of the Collins Institute in the Chickasaw Nation of the Indian Territory. He served as superintendent there for a period of four years and afterward became president of the Corvallis College at Corvallis, Montana" ... so This William Letcher WAS in Montana and HE was the teacher... possibly Julia too but HE definitely WAS.
Now, The William Letcher Stamper mentioned in this article was married previously to Mary Catherine May. The article does not address that fact, but William and Mary Catherine had a son, THOMAS FREDERICK Stamper b. Dec 1884 in IOWA,

therefore I do believe we have solved the mystery of the 1900 census....and Julia
Nowm aout Lillian? in 1910 census, she lists being born in colorado, and her father as being born in Germany. In 1900 census of Denver, Lillian Schlessinger is in the home of F.S. and Augusta Schlessinger, age 29, b. Colorado, her father b. Austria ... I think that's close enough to conclude that this is the same Lillian B. Schlessinger as the one in William's hh in 1910.
William did not marry Georgia Center until 1911.. boy, that's really quick after the 1910 census ???

found the following. Thought you might find it interesting. It was pulished in 1918 and from Wolfe Co, KY, so might not be up to date even at that time.
It says he did not remove to Denver until 1906, so probably not the William md to Julia.

W. Letcher STAMPER 3287, Wolfe Co.
Sandi Gorin (View posts ) Posted: 21 Jun 1999 12:00PM GMT Classification: Query
Surnames: Stamper, Lacey, Center, Robinson, Harmon, Wilson
History of Colorado , Illustrated, Volume II, The S. J. Clarke Publishing Company, 1918., p. 642. Wolfe Co.

Hon. W. Letcher Stamper , attorney at law, practicing at the Denver bar, has also been quite well known in connection with his active service along political lines. He is ever found to be a stalwart champion of any cause which he espouses and he puts forth most earnest and effective effort toward securing the adoption of the principles in which he believes. Mr. Stamper comes to Colorado from Kentucky , his birth having occurred in Wolfe county in the latter state, December 20, 1856. He is a descendant of that distinguished divine, Rev. Jonathan Stamper , of Kentucky , who was truly a southern cavalier and died some time ago at Springfield , Illinois . His father was William M. Stamper, a representative of one of the old families of Kentucky , his birth having occurred in Wolfe county , February 28, 1831. His ancestors settled in Virginia prior to the Revolutionary war and the family has long been connected with the south. William M. Stamper was a planter and an extensive dealer in live stock. He made his home in Wolfe county throughout his entire life and became an influential factor in democratic circles there, doing much to further the interests of his party in state and nation. He was also a supporter of civic interests, giving earnest aid and cooperation to many movements which were of direct benefit to his community. For a number of years he occupied the position of county superintendent of schools and he also served as sheriff of Wolfe county . In his business affairs he met with a fair measure of success. His religious faith was that of the Baptist church and his life exemplified the teachings of Christianity. He died April 17, 1867, at the age of thirty-seven years. His wife prior to her marriage was Miss Rachel Lacey , who was born in Wolfe county , March 16, 1831, her ancestors having been early residents of both Virginia and Kentucky , but the family is of English extraction. She became the mother of five sons, all of whom reached adult age, W. Letcher of this review being the first-born. He has four brothers who are yet living. His brother, Thomas F. Stamper, is a resident of Campton , Kentucky and has been in civil office for the past eighteen years. James Harlan , a resident of Campton , was at one time in the wholesale grocery business and also engaged in farming, while at the present time he is a well known oil magnate who has attained notable wealth. Andrew Howard is an attorney who through the greater part of his life has filled public office and is now located at Campton . Greenberry is engaged in the practice of law at Campton and easily takes rank as one of the ablest members of the bar in eastern Kentucky . Mrs. Rachel (Lacey ) Stamper died October 30, 1903, at the old home in Kentucky , when seventy-two years of age. W. Letcher Stamper began his education in the public schools of Wolfe county , Kentucky , and afterward had the benefit of instruction in some of the best schools in that state. He spent his time upon the home farm to the age of eighteen years, when he entered upon educational work, taking up the profession in his native state. He was principal of The Ladies Academy at Peach Orchard , Lawrence county , Kentucky for two years and afterward was elected superintendent of the Collins Institute in the Chickasaw Nation of the Indian Territory. He served as superintendent there for a period of four years and afterward became president of the Corvallis College at Corvallis, Montana . Since that time he has been actively engaged in the practice of law. He entered upon the practice of the profession at Campton , Kentucky , and in 1906 removed to Denver and has since followed the profession in Colorado . He prepares his cases with great thoroughness and care, is logical in his argument, clear in his reasoning and sound in his deductions. He is director, vice president and attorney for the Midwest Petroleum Company of Denver . It is not strange to say of Mr. Stamper, since he came from Kentucky , that his hobby is horses and one of his greatest pleasures comes to him through horseback riding. On the 4th of April, 1911, at Dalhart, Texas , Mr. Stamper was united in marriage to Miss Georgia Center, a native of Tennessee and a daughter of the late Rev. Francis K. Center, a Methodist minister, whose wife born the maiden name of Sarah Willis Robinson and was a member of one of the old families of Tennessee . Both Mr. and Mrs. Center have passed away. Mrs. Stamper is a cousin of the late Dewit Center, who was appointed by the federal government at the close of the Civil War to the position of governor of Tennessee and was greatly beloved by the Confederate soldiers on account of the consideration shown them in taking the oath of allegiance to the government. In his fraternal relations Mr. Stamper is a Knight of Pythias. In politics he has always been an earnest democrat but never an office seeker, and the only political position that he has filled was that of police judge of Campton , Kentucky . In 1912, when Governor Harmon of Ohio was making his presidential race, Mr. Stamper was the western manager and made addresses not only in Colorado but throughout the west and southwest. In 1916 he was an alternate delegate to the national democratic convention held at St. Louis, Missouri , and he worked during that campaign under the direction of the democratic national committee, with headquarters in Chicago, his territory being the states of Wyoming , Colorado , New Mexico and Arizona , and at the election every state in which he labored gave strong support to President Wilson . His religious faith is that of St. PaulÂ's Methodist Episcopal church, South, and he has taken an active and helpful interest in church work. Mr. Stamper, by industry and economy has identified himself with all the interests of Colorado and has left his impress upon same. He is unusually active in everything that has for its object the betterment of conditions in his state. He is in great demand for gatherings all over the country where great and economic questions are to be discussed. While he is over the draft age, he is helping in every way possible to win the war. He has the respect and confidence of everyone who knows him, and easily takes rank with the leading men of his commonwealth.

Robert Howard Stamper, age 23 born in North Carolina, (circa 1869) lists his father as Mark and mother:Lucy Abbott. He married in NYC, was a machinist engineer; had four children, one son and three daughters. His son, Mark H. married and had children. I hope to connect as I am curious if his descendants left New York, headed out of area.
A connection through his wife.
I don't believe Lucy ever married Mark Stamper, however, I did find Robert Stamper as a child living with Lucy, in her mother's household in NC.
Cherie, hope this gets to you. We are 4th cousins. Your great-grandmother Ora Ellen Cox was the daughter of John R Cox, who was brother the my 2nd great-grandmother Lucretia Cox. John & Lucretia were the children of John T Cox and Martha G Lewis, orginally from KY, but ended up in MO.

I've been working on the Cox line since 1977, but just recently received some information from another cousin in MO, who got it from another cousin in GA. Thru this information I was able to trace Ora Ellen out to OR & ID.

Can you tell me much about Ora Ellen or her parents? I have John listed with his parents on the 1860 Putnam Co, MO census along with his siblings. Then in 1870 the census only uses initials, but I am pretty sure they were still in Putnam Co. After that I lose them though one sister is in Chariton Co, MO.

Several family members come out to OR & ID, my Lucretia being one of them. She is buried at Weston, Umatilla Co, OR, where I believe your Stampers lived for a while.

Well I need to get going, my family just showed up for dinner. Write when you get a chance and I will update you more on the Cox line.

Debbie Rothrock Doyle

Solomon Stamper - 1820 - NC to IN

I am researching Solomon Stamper. Solomon was born about 1820 in North Carolina . He was in Greene County, IN by 1841 when he married Margaret Arthur. I’m trying to determine to which Stamper family Solomon belongs.

Online, I've seen Solomon's parents identified as William Stamper and Peggy Baldwin. Unfortunately, I haven't seen documentation. Are these his parents?

On the 1850 Greene County, IN census, living with Solomon and Margaret are Polly Blevins (b. abt. 1817 in NC - identified as "widow") and her probable son Sanders Blevins (b. abt. 1847 in NC). Nearby are John and Frankey (Stamper) Cox (b. abt. 1814 in NC) and Jonathan Stamper (b. abt. 1808 in NC) and wife, Cynthia. It's likely that Solomon, Polly, Frankey, and Jonathan are at least related and are possibly siblings.

Can anyone help me with my Stampers?

Debbi
Re: Solomon Stamper - 1820 - NC to IN

I appreciate you sharing your research. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one questioning this branch of the family.

I haven't come to any firm conclusions, but I'd like to throw a little more out there.

I'd like to assume that the Greene County, IN Stampers are siblings. Obviously, the assumption might be proven wrong, but it's a start. There's:
Jonathan Stamper b. abt 1808
Frankey (Stamper) Cox: b. abt. 1814
Polly (Stamper?) Blevins: b. abt. 1817
Solomon Stamper: b. abt. 1820

The Polly Blevins living with Solomon's family is a mystery. There's a Mary Blevins living in the William Blevins household in the 1850 Miami County, OH census. The death certificate for their son, Solomon Blevins, listed his parents as William Blevins and Pauline Stamper. Is the Polly Blevins identified as a widow in Solomon Stamper's household in Greene County, IN in 1850 a different person than the Mary Blevins in Ohio?

I was directed to 2 ECAs that may deal with this branch of the family. In ECA #489 for Elizabeth (Stamper) Hurley. Elizabeth claims to be the granddaughter of Solomon Stamper and Betsy (Sizemore) Stamper. She says Solomon and Betsy's children are:

William
Jonathan
George
Riley P. (died 1904)
Solomon Jr.
Susanna (d. 1892)
Sally Thompson
Franky Cox

Nancy Stamper also made a claim (ECA #35884) that she was the daughter of Solomon and Betsey (Sizemore) Stamper. She names their children as:

Nancy
William
Jonathan
Solomon
Riley P.
Polly
Frankey
Sallie

I would love to hear from others who have researched this.

Debbi

Still looking! I think this is the hardest part of my family, my mom's side is. Both of my grandparents on this side are first generations born in America. My dad's has been here for hundred's of years, so much easier. If you have any information it would be greatly appreciated. My grandpa Paul has some but I just haven't been able to sit down to get in touch about family genealogy. Now that my semester has ended I have a few more months to do some research.

Hi Patricia .... I see you posted this in 1999, I hope you're still there. I don't have any news about your great grandmother but, couldn't believe I found your message.... read on.

My husband is from Carterton, VA. He was told years ago that his grandfather, Dale Stamper, was Jack Carter's son. He has no proof and his immediate family don't seem to know anything about it. I'm not sure they even knew his mother's name was Carrie. Is your grandmother Dale and Fulton's full sister or half? Would love to talk to you and share what we each know .... though, we sadly probably don't know as much as you.

Hoping to hear from you,
Chris Stamper

William Stamper, Denver Colorado 1906-1911?

The 1900 Ravalli Co. Montana census includes William Stamper, born Feb 1858, KY, day labor, married to Julia B., 32, teacher, born MO, son Fred 17, born IA.

A divorce between William and Julia Stampers was recorded in Denver in 1908.

W. L. Stamper was admitted to the CO bar 6/22/1909.

1910 Denver Colo. Census indicates that William Stamper, lawyer (indexed as Standifer), 48(1862), born KY, was living with second wife Lillian B., in Denver, and they had been married 2 yrs (1908). The 1910 City Directory includes William L. Stamper, under Law listings.

The Clarke History of CO article refers to W. Lechter Stamper, KY who was in Corvallis Montana prior to being in Denver between 1906 and 1911.

I am researching Lillian Belle Schlessinger. Based on references in 1910 and 1915 family documents, she is possibly the Lillian B. Stamper in the 1910 census. By 1915 Lillian was married to a Mr. Johnson, and was living in California. I haven't been able to locate Colorado marriage or divorce records for Lillian.

Appreciate any help in determining if W. Lechter and William L. are the same person, and if not, which one Lillie was married to.

Hi Cindy. I am tracing the Crossthwaite ancestry on my husband's behalf. Richard, born in Samelsbury in 1843 was his great great grandfather. James, his grandfather, dob 1885? died in 1918 in WW1. There was a family rumour that one of his brothers emigrated to Australia? His father, Frederick was born in Preston and died in 1999. We are just putting the tree together as much as we can, so please feel free to look at it, and let us know anything we may have missed, or got wrong! How and when did the Crossthwaites go to the States? Looking forward to hearing from you. With Best wishes, Kathy Crossthwaite
