I am researching family of Moses Stanley,Sr. born in
North Carolina, died about 1811 in Wayne City,NC. His Son
was Moses Stanley,Jr. Born 1779 In NC died in Hopkins Co.
Ky 6-14-1852

I believe there is a connection to The Stanalands, Hugh,
Thomas, and John, who came to the American Colonies
from ENGLAND and left an estate that was never settled
Two of the Stanalands were in Craven Co.,NC in 1730.
Hugh was granted land on 11-21-1730 in Craven Co.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has information,
prior to Moses,Sr. and also the English Stanalands coming
to America

Thank You

Dean,
There is a Family History containing a lot of information on the Stanalands of Thomas County, Ga. area. The book is titled Mule Creek, History of the Wilson, Stanaland and Allied Families by H. Grady Wilson, Jr. of Athens, Ga.
Mr. Wilson is still living, He's is in his late 70's. He has followed the Stanalands from Hugh Stanaland b. circa 1640 to your interest of Dollie A.. As of two weeks ago he still had a few copies of this book available. It is a very well researched and written history of the Stanalands.

Darrell: Thanks for the reply. If Dollie is John Hinson Stanaland's daughter then that would tie them to Booz/Boaz Stanaland and Dorothy Hollingsworth, correct? I can verify Dollie's husband as Andrew Cox Carter. He was my g grandfather. I have his family bible at my house. Andrew was born on 4/27/1866, married Dollie on 1/13/1889 and he passed away on 11/28/1942. Do you have any info. on Susan Emily Hancock or Dorothy Hollingsworth? Which Stanaland group do you descend from? Thanks for your help.

Julia: I also am searching for information on Hugh StanalandI do have this bit of information, and perhaps you have it also.
Three Stanaland brothers, Hugh,Thomas & John came to the Colonies from England and left an estate which was never
settled. Records show two of them in Craven County, NC
in 1730's. A land grant dated 11-21-1739 was issued to
Hugh for a land grant in Craven Co. NC. Apparently, this
Hugh was the second to come to the U.S. and that his
Father Hugh was born in England and died in NJ in
1690. I find this information confusing, but hope it will be
of help to you

Marie Stanley Johannsen

I am also a decendent of Moses Stanley of Wayne Co.NC
b.1736 died 1811, his son was Moses Stanley,Jr. b.1777
in NC and d. 1852 in KY. I believe they probably were
decendents of the Stanalands.

I have a brick wall -- Christopher Basford married Charlotte Stanaland 1805 in Brunswick County, N.C. They had two sons and disappeared 1830 and I have not been able to pick them up again. Christopher was a brother to my husband's Grt-Grt-Grt Grandfather, William Basford. I have not been able to connect Charlotte to her family - would love to. Any help, please E-mail! Thanks! Ginny

I have fairly extensive information in a book entitled "The Stanalands of the U.
Ginny, you didn't post an email address, so I couldn't reply via email.

There are 3 Charlottes in "The Stanalands of the U. S.," but none of them appears to have been born at the right time to have been the Charlotte you seek.

The first one was the second wife of Hugh Stanaland born ca 1720, d. ca. 1790/5, and I have no maiden name, d.o.b., etc., for her.

2nd one is Charlotte Stanley, (some changed their Stanaland name to Stanley), born -1835. She was the daughter of William A. Stanley, Jr., born -1786 (no d.o.death shown) and Polly Webb Stanley who were married 8-9-1809 in "Joh." Co., NC.

The third one was Charlotte Ann Stanley, no dob given, but she wouldn't be the right one as her parents were too young. She was/is daughter of Ralph Butler Stanley, born 2-5-1902, d. 9-24-1958, and Sallie Richardson.

Wish I could've been more helpful.

Pat
husband's Grt-Grt-Grt Grandfather, William Basford. I have not been able to connect Charlotte to her family - would love to. Any help, please E-mail! Thanks! Ginny>>

Hi Sheila,

I feel sure that I have some of the people you seek, as the name Nixon Ottoway, or "Nixon Otway" as it is listed in the book, is very uncommon. However, there are some spelling differences and I show Elizabeth M. StanLEY not StanDland), dob 4-22-1842, dod 4-3-1905. who married Nixon Otway (not Ottoway) on 11-14-1860 in Brunswick County, NC. Nixon Otway's dob is shown as 10-26-1839, dod 4-26-1928. Elizabeth and Nixon are shown as having had 5 children: Nellie, Robert F., Margaret Ann, Cora L., and Elizabeth N. Otway.

I also find a John B. StanAland (not StanDland), dob 10-1-1811, dod 5-18-1895. The only Winnifred I find close to yours is Winnifred Stanly born NC ca. -1813,who married someone named "West" and migrated to GA. Nothing more is listed for her.

Email me at PatNGA@aol.com for the address where you can obtain the book... It is at the author's home, so I won't post it publicly.

Pat

Family Stories

My name is Darrel Bell, I'm a descendant of Thomas Stanaland born ca 1795 NC, son of Needham Stanaland. Trying to put together facts and sort them away from folklore and fantasy, I would like to know if any of you have heard of any of these tales.

All through my younger years I'd been told stories as to how our family came to America. This being that there were three children who stowed away on a ship that came to the US in about 1835. They were supposed to be trying to escape the wrath of their step-mother. Some family members indicate it was three boys and some say it was two boys and a girl. To accept my lineage through Thomas Stanaland logic tells me that the stories are something that was made up. However, there are few hard-liners that will not accept anything but what was told to them.

The other story relates to a woman and a small girl who were kidnapped by indiands and several months later just reappeared, the exact time frame for this is unknown. However, this tale has be recounted from various people who have a Stanaland/Stanley heritage.
