Hi,

Yes, As I mentioned the "new" information is now nearly ten years old. And, you are correct in that it is still theory as to who his parents are/were.

I am a bit surprised you referred to North Americans and our word "Obsession" with connecting to Myles.

Isn't all genealogy an obsession of a sort? Don't we search old family documents, Bibles, and photos curious as to our beginnings. Haven't we all spent endless hours at the Family History Centers (formally Mormon Libraries), the county courthouses, small local historical societies, graveyards, etc all seeking our family histories?

I grew up in a family that each year had a large family gathering/reunion - maternal side. This tradition has been around for nearly 100 years. I knew my aunts/uncles and cousins for several generations.
However, we didn't know much about the paternal side. And it was our mother who visited dad's cousins and told us of them (but being young, I didn't really care then).

For twenty five years, I've been working our genealogy as has one other brother. We've got family history leading back to Scotland, Holland, Germany, Austria, Ireland and of course, England. The ancesters were not all famous, most were ordinary men and women who worked hard all their lives and raised families. I've been fortunate to find interesting facts, stories and tales. Recording as much of it all in one place is a goal. I'll take the common people, the famous and even any infamous as they are all a part of my lineage.

So, while I'm fairly confident that Myles is my 10th ggrandfather even though I can't prove it - I have a missing link in the line - he is not on any official family tree that I share with anyone.

This doesn't hinder my fascination with the man and his achievements, or my "obsession" to know his parentage too.

Please forgive my little diatribe, but I took umbrage at what I perceived to be a flippant remark.

Enjoy your ancestor hunting.

don standish

Hi Mark,

Yes, the link is nine years old and has changed.
There is a website: http://www.mylesstandish.info

This site has lots of info on Myles - the two dominant theories of his lineage and several articles on each.
I've bookmarked this site as it gets updated throughout the year. Let me know what you think please.

If you are interested in any of the books - Young, Hill, even Porteus, I've found and purchased each on eBay at times at decent prices. Or, you can try Abesbooks.com

Unfortunately, until we find the family Bible, the christening log, the marriage/birth/death records, we may never really know Myles' parentage. Everyone who's picked up on Hill's theory and published it on line is still speculating.

However, there may be a family record out there waiting to be discovered.

Feel free to email me at donstandish@yahoo.com for more exchanges of info and data.
Don

I'm afraid that this "new information" is still a theory lacking in any substantial or definitive answers. The answer to the origin of the much revered Miles may never be answered further adding frustration to the N. American obsession to be connected to him.

I'd be very interested in your documentation as to Captain Myles Standish's parentage. Are you relying on the research of Porteus and Young? I've read all their books and while they make a good point, they still hadn't produced actual records (birth, marriage, christenings, wills, etc) that mention Myles and link him definitively to John, John and Huan.

Therefore, the Isle of Man connection remains one theory and not fact.

Moorewood's latest data all leaves a lot of conjecture and also remains a theory and not fact.

The Thomas Standish they mention who squandered the heritage was of Ormskirk. I don't believe that Myles would have mentioned his ggrandfather being a 2nd or younger child of the House of Standish if that was the case.

Keep up the search.
Don Standish

Sorry i forgot the actual name.
If you end up with any pics, would you share? I am trying to get a collection of Standish phots - especially the male line to search for fammily resemblences.

I had found a photo of Mathew M Standish from Plattsburgh, NY on line along with a brief bio.
I too have ancestors going back to the original Standish family, but not Myles as so many people seem to have. Mine are mainly an Australian branch. I live not far from Standish in Lancashire and have come across an informative web site that gives all the details of the Duxbury family of Standish's. This is the link:-www.standish.org.uk from there you can look up the "wiki standish" site which gives the whole history of who was who.

Happy hunting
Sue

Hello,
I've checked my copy of the book, "Mayflower Families Through Five Generations - Myles Standish".
There is no mention of an Alma Matilda nor any female with just one of those names, and no Cross in the Index of names at the back of the book. This lists the descendants of Myles recognized by the Mayflower Society through five generations and the birth dates of these goes into the early 1800's.
By the late 1790's and early 1800's there were other Standish families that migrated from England and Ireland. Perhaps Alma is descended from one of these?
good luck in your research.
don

Since you're referring to Cole's and Standishes in Erie County, the following may be of use to you.

Catherine Leone (STANDISH)Cole, also known as Kate (1800 fed. census) was daughter of Alanson K.(1815 -1871) and Laura/Lora (BENNETT) (1824 -1907)Standish.

Catherine was born in NY in 1862 - probably Chatauqua County. In the 1880 census, Catherine/Kate was listed with W H and Henrietta (STANDISH) Himebaugh as a border.

In the 1890 census, Catherine is listed with Charles H Cole - married. One daughter: Bertha, age 18 and a son, Lewis Alonzo Cole.

Now, Charles Harvey was married before to Clara and they had a son,Archie S. Cole(1879 -1962). Clara died in June, 1882. (in childbirth??)
I mention this because:
If Catherine married in that year - after Clara's death in June, then for her to have given birth to Bertha would have meant a very premature delivery; and, most of our family records mention only two children for our Catherine/Kate - Lewis Alonzo and then in 1893 - Charles Lester Cole.

by the way, Catherine would have been a seventh generation from Myles Standish.

the new library in Erie has an excellent collection of old newspapers on microfilm. If the newspaper article you mentioned exists, they may have a copy of the issue. I certainly found loads of information from obituraries for nearly all my clan (even Alanson's in 1871) to interestinf artilces about anniversaries, etc.

Also, I have photos of most of the gravestones from the North East Cemetery for Standish, Cole, Burch, Carnahan and McGuire.

feel free to email me at: donstandish@yahoo.com if you'd like more info. I'm always looking for more sources and family.
:-)
don

Hi, I hope I'm not blowing someone's bubble. Apparently I've been a well kept secret for 52 years. My name is Dave Godfrey, I was born William Leslie Mears to Lorena M. Baskett, in Seattle, Jan. 23, 1956. I was adopted in 1957 at Oak Harbor & raised in CA./ WA. by beloved adoptive parents. Tonie Marie Mears is my full blood sister. I hope to speak to her soon. I'm very sorry that I will not be able to meet Donna. I hope to meet other family members before too much time passes. It's taken me 12 years to get to this point. I decided that finding Tonie would be a great 40 th. birthday present Unfortunately I started on the Mears side & found I was an unwelcome surprise. I almost did not make it here, at 45 I was diagnosed with familial polyposis. A hereditary condition that usually leads to terminal colon cancer if untreated before the age of 40. PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THIS ! I don't know which side of my family tree passed on this trait, but this is deadly & a terrible way to go. I was extremely fortunate to survive & did so only after two not very pleasant surguries. I am quite well now & hope all of you will be too. I also hope I'm fortunate enough to meet any & all of you who are so inclined. Be assured, the only thing I seek is familial contact. The Mears family in Texas seem to be fearful of me perhaps wanting something more from them, I do not. I don't know if any of you can relate to my desire to meet a blood relative, someone that I resemble. I have no memory of this. I was raised in a loving home, have a younger brother & sister, seemingly lacked nothing. But there is sometning missing in my life & it becomes more important as I get older... it's "y'all"
In closing, I would like to meet my mother if she's up to it. ( it's too late to meet my father & he wasn't interested ) I have no hard feelings, I understand that she was in a very dificult situation & she did what she thought was best for me, I appreciate that. I've had a wonderful life & it can only get better, hopefuly by meeting some of you.
Tonie, I hope this hasn't been too much of a shock for you. I am so looking forward to speaking to & meeting you. My e-mail add. is fastr90s@gmail.com, my phone # 509-732-8897. Call any time, call collect.
Sincerely,
Dave Godfrey

P.S. Here's a not so good pic of me last summer. As you can see, I'm avoiding growing up :)

Kylie,

More information. I am so pleased to get the email regarding your ancestor, Richard Austin Standish. i had an idea he lived in Melbourne one time (next door to the Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies). AS I said in my other email to you I have traced Richard's mother's family back to 1600. They came from Newton, Scotland. The Standish family was an aristocratic family dating back to 1200, when Ralph De Standish, saved the king from being killed by Watt Tylor (the first republican in england) This event is depicted in a stained glass church in Standish, near Wigan. I am trying to find out when our branch of the Standishes went to Ireland. i believe a brother was sent there some time early 14/15th century to look after estates etc.

Alma Matilda Standish?

Does anyone have an Alma Matilda Standish in their tree?

Obituaries and family genealogy says that my GGG Grandmother was a "direct decendent of Myles Standish".

Alma Matilda Standish was married to John Cross (b 1792) and their daughter was Alma Matilda Cross who married George Washington Reed. One of their sons was named Lewis Standish Reed.

Here is a somewhat easier to read list:

John Cross (b 1792) married Alma Matilda Standish (unkn birth, she died about 1841 and her daughter Alma was cared for by another couple)
- Charles Cross
- Emily Cross
- Frederick Cross
- Edwin T Cross (Edwin is buried in Jetmore, KS near his sister and brother-in-law)
- Alma Matilda Cross (b 1841 in Ohio and died in 1909 in Kansas) married George Washington Reed (b 1834)
-- Lewis Standish Reed (b 1878 in Ohio)
-- Fred J Reed (b 1875 -- this is my line)
-- several other children too....

Thank you!

There is an intriguing little note about a James Standish of Killingholm England in "Encylopedia of Connecticut Biography, HArt et al, The Amer. Hist. Soc., NY, 1917, pg. 19 . Refering to a Belden who was the dad to Sir Francis Beldon, the ancestor of the Beldon that came to Wethersfield, it says that, "He m.Anne, daughter of Thomas and Jane (Pigot) Folkingham of Leeds and wodiw of JAMES STANDISH of Killingholme, in the county of Lincoln." There is no source for this info...of course...these old books are like that but......
it might mean that this Standish, from the same part of the country as the Beldons...migrated together to Wethersfield, Ct. This might be the family of our Thomas Standish of Wethersfield.
Has anyone done research on this? Where was Myles Standih's family from?
Thanks.
Deb
Beldon..Standish...MErrill and Stocking.....

Does anyone know when Maria Dunbar (Lockwood) Westcott died? She is a direct descendant of Myles Standish.
She born 10 May 1851. Her husband Clarence Lincoln Westcott died 1925 and she was still living but not on 1930 census. Did she go to Denmark with her daughter or stay in the states?
