John Standlee, who settled the Cadron Creek area in what is now Faulkner County, Arkansas, had a son named William by his 2nd wife, Sarah. According to the 1850 Federal Census, William was born in Tennessee. If Onesiphorus (I think this is the correct spelling from II Timothy) was a son of John Standlee and his first wife (reputed to have been Cherokee), then this places him in Tennessee for a period of time.

I don't know of any belief that Onesiphorus lived with any Indian tribe or migrated with any Indian tribe. There were a number of Cherokees who left Georgia and Tennessee, before the Trail of Tears----they settled in Carroll County, Arkansas---along Long Creek and lived as their "white" neighbors and merged into White Society (Judge Bradley Bunch, writing in the Carroll County Advocate, 1876). Also, there were groups of Cherokees who came from Georgia, before the Trail of Tears, who lived together in groups and were friendly with early settlers---they eventually moved on to Oklahoma. There were Osage and Shawnee tribes living in this area about the time Onesiphorous and Mary Stratton Bryan arrived---according to writings of my great-great uncle, Rowland Boyd. I don't know of any connection of Onesiphorous to these groups. The idea carried down through the Boren/Standlee families is that John Standlee first married an Indian woman (possibly Cherokee) and that they lived and raised Onesiphorous in "white society".

The name "Onesiphorus" comes from II Timothy 1: 16---spelling in Old King James Version: "The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain"---apostle Paul writing about Onesiphorus visiting him in prison in Rome---Onesiphorus is probably a Greek name.

Although on the 1880 Federal Census, two of his sons, Abraham and Joseph, listed their father's place of birth as Kentucky---when asked his place of birth for the Federal Census of Carroll County, Arkansas, 1850, Onesiphorus said "North Carolina"

Joseph Standlee, a son of Onicypherous, was born 29 October 1820, in Kaskakis, Randolph, Illinois. He died 29 August 1895, at Berryville, Carroll Co., Arkansas. He is buried at Blackjack Cemetery, Berryville---dates from headstones. Another son of Onicypherous was Abraham Standlee, who was born 4 March, 1810 in Butler, Kentucky. Abraham died 21 December 1882, at Berryville, Arkansas---he was the minister at the Old Union Church, Berryville. He is buried at Blackjack Cemetery. On the 1880 Federal Census, both Joseph and Abraham gave their father's place of birth as Kentucky. These Standlees were a very educated group of people for their times---ministers, lawyers, teachers---thus Kentucky may have been accurate. However, in doing research, I have found numerous instances of children just not really knowing where their parents were actually born---so while it looks like Kentucky is correct---I'm still not entirely ruling out North Carolina. Elizabeth Standlee, a daughter of Onicypherous, was my g-g-g grandmother. She was married to Isaac Boren, Sr. whose ancestors were in the western Virginia, North Carolina area before moving west into Tennessee.

Onycipherous Standlee was my g-g-g-g grandfather. His daughter Elizabeth was married to Isaac Boren, Sr. Their son Isaac S. Boren died in a Federal prison for Confederate soldiers in Chicago, in 1863. He served with the 18th Texas Cavalry and was taken prisoner at Arkansas Post. His son Benjamin Dolan Boren (my great-grandfather) was born in Texas; however, his parents (Isaac S. Boren and Martha Gillum Boren Boyd) had lived in what are now Boone and Carroll counties in Arkansas prior to the Civil War. After the Civil War, Martha returned to the land she and Issac S. had purchased before going to Texas---near Alpena, Arkansas. Her second husband Wiley Boyd, of course, was Benjamin Dolan Boren's step-father. Benjamin Dolan Boren married the daughter of a first cousin of Wiley Boyd, Tillman H. Boyd. Ben and Emma Boyd Boren homesteaded a farm in the Alpena community---a grandson now lives in their house. My grandfather John Rufus Boren, a g-g grandson of Onycipherous Standlee, was the oldest child of Ben and Emma Boyd Boren. My mother was the youngest child of John Rufus and Margie Turner Boren. Two sons of Onycipherous married sisters of Isaac Boren, SR.: Kathryrn (Kate) and Susannah (Susan). Onycipherous farmed near Berryville, Arkansas in his later years as did his sons, David and John, and their Boren wives and as did Isaac Boren, Sr., prior to his move to Texas---look at Federal Census Records and Arkansas Census records---1830-1840-1850. Isaac Boren, Sr. was born in Robertson, Tennessee in 1796. (Elizabeth Standlee Boren died at Eureka Springs, Arkansas, about 1845, and Isaac Boren Sr. married a widow, Mary "Polly" Queen Cave.) There is a long history of the Boren family in Robertson, Tennessee. After Tennesse, Isaac Sr. lived in Union, Illinois, and in Missouri---before moving to Washington Co. Arkansas and then later to Carroll County, Ar. While it is possible that he met Elizabeth Standlee in Missouri, most Boren family trees list them as having been married in Tennessee---so seems entirely possible to me that Elizabeth was with her parents (Onycipherous and Mary Stratton Bryan) in Tennessee when she met Isaac Boren, Sr. I'm aware that Onycipherous is a Biblical name--would have to look at Bible for correct spelling. No census record done in his lifetime would give Onycipherous' place of birth, but some of his children may have been asked and may have given their father's place of birth on later census records---I'll check and get back to you. About John Standlee who settled the area of Cadron Creek in Faulkner Arkansas---he had a daughter named Sarah, married to John C. Benedict. The Benedicts arrived at the mouth of Cadron Creek in 1818. They had been living in New Madrid, Missouri, since 1811. They joined Sarah's father, John Standlee, who had moved to the mouth of Cadron Creek in 1814---the area became known as the Benedict settlement. (I have no first hand evidence, but word of mouth, passed through generations is that Sarah Standlee Benedict was a sister to Onycipherous.)---information concerning Cadron Settlement recorded in Log Cabin Democrat, Conway, Arkansas newpaper in 1837---transcript of a speech by Little Rock Judge J. S. Utley. His account, according to the Log Cabin Democrat, was based upon an account written several years earlier by a son of John Standlee. This is just my opinion at this time, but it seems to me that John Standlee was married twice---first to mother of Onycipherous and Sarah and possibly, John Jr.---then to a Sarah, who was the mother of David and William, and Green, and their sisters, who were early settlers with their father, in Faulkner, Arkansas

Hi Fred,

I can scan the documents onto my computer and email them to you or I can mail you copies. If you will send me your email address or mailing address I will send them to you. I am actually going to Berryville, Arkansas tomorrow and will be gone a few days, however I can mail them as soon as I get back home. My email address is lorri59@aol.com. The documents are from the estate of a woman named Marie Graves who was a Genealogist doing studies on the Standlee family. It is reprinted in the the 1951 summer edition of the Arkansas Historical Quarterly. I hope you will find them as fascinating as I did. Sincerely, Lorri Gaither

I have a xerox copy of an article written in the Arkansas Historical Quarterly. It is called Story of an Early Settlement in Central Arkansas and was originally written by John (Stanley) Standlee's grandson Russell W. Benedict that talks about John Standlee and his wife Sarah. It also talks about his rememberance of the Arkansas area, family and neighbors in Arkansas when he, his mother Rebecca, father John C. Benedict and family moved to the Arkansas area. It is an interesting and I would be more than happy to share it with anyone who is interested. I was so excited to find this article and I hope others in our family line share my enthusiasm

I can be reached by email at Lorri59@aol.com

I am looking for info on Joseph and Milla/Millie Standlee that were in Carroll County, AR. They had a son, John, that I think is the same John I am looking for. John Stanley is listed in the 1880 Eureka Springs, Carroll County, AR census. His age would have made his birthdate 1838, his parents were listed as being from IL.

John used the last names of Stanley and Standlee during his lifetime. John married ELizabeth Jane Harlow, she died in Hot Springs, AR between 1880-1890. Their 1st son was Joseph Thomas Standlee, born 1866 in AR, Joseph used Stanley. John was said to have been an ammuntion wagon driver during the civil war. He lived in Stone COunty, MO and later Grayson County, TX and Carter County, OK. He died in 1922.

I saw the 1850 census listing Joseph and Milla Standlee with a son, John, born in 1838, that would match up with our John. PLease contact me if you have any info at:
stanleycrafts@aol.com

Thanks, Jana Stanley
I am looking for info on my husbands great great great grandfather, John Standlee, born December 1839 in AR. He may have been an ammunition wagon driver in the Civil War. He married ELizabeth Jane Harlow, she was probably Indian. He died 1922 in Carter County, OK. He probably lived in Collin County Texas in the 1890s, before ending up in OK by 1902. His kids went by Stanley for the most part.
kids:
Joseph Thomas b. 1866 or 1868, probably in Litlte Rock, AR
Luetta or Louety b. 1869 in MO
William Rice b. 1873 in Carroll, AR
Ira Only b. 1876 in MO
Alice M. b. 1878 in MO
Maude b. 1880 in Eureka Springs, Carroll County, AR
Minnie info unknown

John and his family were listed in the 1880 Eureka Springs census under Stanley. His parents were listed as being from IL. I found some 1850 census info that have 2 John's that could be a match for me. Here is the info, John would have been about 11, close to 12 during this census:

368
Standlee John 49 farmer Ky
Susanah 48 Tenn
Elizabeth 20 Ark
Susanah 18 Ark
David 16 farmer Ark
John 11 Ark
Joseph 9 Ark
414
Standlee Joseph 34 farmer Illinois
Milla 32 NC
John 12 Ark
Joseph 7 Ark
Elizabeth 5 Ark
Susanah 2 Ark

if you have any info, please let me know.

Thanks, Jana Stanley stanleycrafts@aol.com

Re: Onicypherous Standlee

WOW! There is a lot of activity on my 7x Great Grandfather!

Ok, so I have been devoted to this issue of being part Native American & I have discovered a lot!

Since it appears that Lu Bird's email no longer works, please me share with you what I have discovered. It is WAY off the beaten path, but if you will bear with me you may frind this very interesting!

If indeed this Onicypherous Standlee was born in Tryon County, NC in 1768 we might want to contact the authorities. Tryon County was not formed until 1769 and only lasted until 1779! It was formed from Mecklenberg County (which if born in 1768 would be the correct county) and then when Tryon Co. ended it split into Rutherford & Lincoln Counties.

Upon much reading & research it appears the the majority of Native Ameicans in the area of NC were Cherokee & Shawnee, however, because they where the larger tribese. There was a smaller tirbe that was in the Mecklenberg/Anson County area in the 1740's, 1750's, & 1760's called the Catawba Indians.

They were very small & made much smaller by diesease & wars. By 1959 the US government had written them off as a recognized tribe because most were mix-breeds & no longer spoke their native tongue, which was of Siouan. In 1993 the government retracted & they currently hold a reservation location in York County, SC....which borders Mecklenberg County, NC and the once Tryon County! The Catawba River is the main land marker here. They were soon immersed into history & society as "a sturdy race of early pioneers."

I have land records showing that by 1795 Onicypherous Standlee was indeed living in Logan County, KY. And then they made their way into IL, MO, and then landed in Carroll County, AR. I believe it important that he never lived in TN, & completely avoiding the main stream of Cherokee in to AR.

Also the Cherokee Reservation in 1820's in AR was just on the far southeast border, where the Standlee's did not live. However, they did seem to take a route closely related to the Shawnee as well, going into Randolph County, IL & Butler County, MO. There were smaller tribes of this Nation also located in the northwest areas of AR.

I am not certain & haven't heard from those that I have contacted in regards to this manner, but I am now on a path with the Catawba & Shawnee Inidians. At some point, due to relations, the Catawba were forced to live with the Cherokee in the Carolinas. That might be the connection to the mix up of Onicypherous Standlee being Cherokee. Also it might need to be pointed out that the Cherokee often took the lands that the Shawnee left, just as soon as they left them. So again, another possible connection to the mix up of being Cherokee. But at this point I am certain that he was indeed not Cherokee. Heck, even the Cherokee have been trying to tell our family this with ALL their many denials! And he is not Kickapoo either, for those who went in that direction, though it was good sense of logic since they were also in that region of AR at one time.

I am still researching on backwards past Onicypherous Standlee. I feel it is important to mention that there has been a great mix up in the Standlee/Standley/Standly/Stanley/Stanly's. The ones that are in the Conway, AR area could be related, but are not a direct desendant of Onicypherous Standlee.

If you have any questions or comments, you are more than welcome to contact via posts or email: xpaxk@hotmail.com
I am always looking for help & new clues.
Charles, there is also the book: Carroll County's Families, These Were the First that includes a great many of the first Standlee's in Carroll Co. with some interesting stories from family. It was put out by the Carroll Co. Gen. Society, to get a copy see this link:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~arcchs/hspub.html

And yes, pay extra for the index if you have to. You will never get to the bottom otherwise.

Thank you! I have been saying this for years now! Thank you! Thank you!

The Standlee's loved their Bibles & their names. You can get lost with them all sharing the same Biblical names over & over.

Diane -

If this didn't help, or maybe I have something different...just let me know. Monroe Standlee was my Great Grandfather. William Robert was my grandfather. I will help where I can.

Thanks!

Re: Looking for Oncephorous Standlee descendents

Hello,

I noticed your post & thought I would share a few words. Everyone that is searching this individual is exhausting the same path that you are mentioning. The problem is that there is no proof in the pudding, so to speak.

I am a Standlee decendent & I can promise you that the family stories go on & on, way back...but there isn't any connections between Onicypherous (& his various spellings) & his father being John Standlee. I have found it very humorous over the years that they still cling to it being John "Nolichucky Jack" Standlee! The John Standlee they refer to is the one that settled the central area of Arkansas...no direct relation to Onicypherous Standlee.

Also, please do some research because there is no Central, England. If there is truth to be told in this story it could refer to the "central area" of England...which then you get into the Earl's of Derby Standlee's & then lost again. Also, there are Central Counties in various east coast states, which before 1777 was England! Might consider that as well.

The problem lies in the lack of information. You can find Onicypherous in KY, IL, MO & AR. In that order. I have yet to find any one with, or any documentation locating him in NC or in TN.

If he was born in NC & had any possible Native American blood in him it could only be Catawba, as they were the only ones left in the area at the time of his birth, but even then, most had moved on to SC & other places. Also, another misconception is that Onicypherous is an indian name. It is not, it a Biblical name...like all the other Standlee's!

Don't let a bunch of non-documented research cloud your vision. Anyone can copy & paste!! Be sure that you also document each & every ancestor. I am currently on a lead for John & David Standlee who are connected to the Scot-Irish Colony family, the Larue's (LaRue, Larew) up in VA & NJ areas. At the time they are the only "Standlee's" spelt currectly that I have been able to locate.

I hope that this helps a little in your research & maybe save you a load of time. I know I would have liked this information before I started off on another family folk lore!

I haven't checked dates but am wondering if this could be John Standlee and Susanna Boren. My husband's ancesters were brother and siter to hese two -- David Standlee and Catherine Boren. David's & that John's father was Onicypherous Standlee and Mary Stratton Bryan. We believe Cyph's parents were John "Nolihucky Jack" Standlee and either a Nancy Elizabeth or a Sarah. One or both were Cherokee Indian we believe. Have documentation back to Cyph, ut no actual documentation to John. Your John is not this far back but a younger one. But many of the Bandy family and Standlee family went to Oklahoma (Indian Territory) and some on to Texas, although I have seen that some died in Colorado and some in Idaho and some in California. But all the Bandy's are related. I think the Standlee's you are from is also elated to my husband's. His mother when she talks of the area talks of Berryville, Grandview both in AR and also Eureka Springs.

You and my husband are distant cousins. He is descended from William H. Bandy and Catherine Standlee, descended from David Standlee and Catherine Boren, descended from Onicypherous tandlee. I'm trying to document descent from John Standlee ("Nolihucky Jack") and whichever wife was Cyph's mother. I had John married to a Nancy Elizabeth and also a Sarah. Cyph's birth was quite a while before the other children of John - they show up on census while Cyph doesn't. carolyn.wilkerson@yahoo.com

I would love to have the information on John Standlee and his wife/wives in Tennessee and in AR. My husband is descended from Bandy line which had William H. Bandy marrying Catherine Standlee, daughter of David Standlee and Catherine Boren, David was son of Onicypherous Standlee and Mary Stratton Bryan. We believe that Cyphorous's father was John Standlee who came from England through NC, TN and then into AR. I have a Nancy Elizabeth (if I remember right) as a wife and also a Sarah. Also have down something about him being married to a Cherokee woman (think that was on a census record). I thought might be married to one and had Cyphorous and then to the other wife and had the other children who were some time afterwards.

What documentation do you have and is it the same John Standlee? carolyn.wilkerson@yahoo.com

I'mng for the John Standlee documentation that would be grandfather to this one, if he is there? My husband is descended from Onicypherous Standlee (through David Standlee and Catherine Boren) and am trying to document his father. Stories are that it is John Standlee (for whom your relative is namesake) who married two womean evidently == Nancy Elizabeth and Susan or Susanna. One of them evidently was Cherokee. Trying to find documentation as what I saw had children of John "Nolihucky Jack" Standlee and Nancy Elizabeth, I believe and didn't have down Onicypherous, but he was born earlier. I thought perhaps married Indian in TN and had Cyphorous and then moved to AR and might have remarried or remarried in TN and moved to AR. What do you have and what is documented and now?

My husband has family through Onicypherous Standlee. I have down a John Standlee and a Nancy Elizabeth, i believe, and a Sarah, which is guess is probably your ancestress. I am not sure which wife my husband's line is through. In fact, I don't have the documentation I need that onicypherous was born to John Standlee. Is this the John "Nolihucky Jack" Standlee? Info I have down is that he was born in Bradford, Central, England, but there is confusion and not adequate documentation to be sure.

So I am looking for documentation. My husband is David Van Lente, son of Mary Esther Bandy, daughter of William Lloyd Bandy and Kate DeBurger (Carrol, AR), Lloyd is son of Isaac "Ike" Bandy and Viola Cotter, Ike is son of William H. Bandy and Catherine Standlee. She was daughter of David Standlee and Catherine Boren (evidently 2 brothers and 2 sisters married as there is also a John Standlee and Susan or Susann Boren) and David Standlee is son of Onicypherous. Whom I hope I can find documentation on as to his parents. So do you have down for sure that to who his parents are? carolyn.wilkerson@yahoo.com

I found a Cyphorous Standlee born 1768 in NC and died on 1855 in AR, married Mary Polly Bryan born 1771 in VA and died in 1849. There children are: Abraham S, Elizabeth, Joseph W, Susannah, David, John, Sarah. I found that Onicyoherous Standlee, had a sister named Sarah Standlee, that married a John C. Benedict. MY email is uugogirl@adelphia.net, not related just helping out.
