Re: Mayme Stanford

Some quick research on Ancestry.com shows the following:

Mayme Stanford was born (according to the 1900 census) in Jan 1888 in Kansas, the daughter of William B. Stanford (b. abt 1847, New York) and Barbara Louisa (surname unknown, b. abt 1851 in New York). We find Mayme's parents living in Washington County, Kansas in the 1880 and 1900 census records. The ages and places of birth for their children indicate that they lived in New Jersey before moving to Kansas 1872/874. By 1910, William and Louisa were living in San Diego, Dan Diego, California.

William and Louisa's children include Maggie Stanford (b. abt 1868, NJ), Lew (b. abt 1872, NJ), Hattie (b. abt 1874, KS), George (b. abt 1876, KS), Walter (b. abt 1878, KS), Mayme (b. Oct 1888, KS), Grace (b. Sep 1889, KS), and Oscar (b. Jan 1892, KS).

William's parents were born in England (as evidenced by census records) and I have not researched their origin. They emigrated to the US prior to 1847, since William was born in New York.

Mayme married John E. Myerly in Kansas before 1910 and the family is found living in San Diego, San Diego, California in the 1910 and 1920 census records. Their children include Garnet L. Myerly (b. abt 1907), Opal V. (b. abt 1910, and Georgia G. (b. about 1913).

This is not my family, but I hope the information helps you.

Looking for father of Artie C. Stanford, b. abt 1891 in Louisiana and Mack Stanford, b. 24 Oct 1894, Texas. Stanford married Gertrude (surname unknown) and the couple had Marshall Stanford (b. 6 Jul 1911, Louisiana, d. Aug 1981, Louisiana), James C. Stanford (b. 6 May 1913, Arkansas, d. Oct 1975, Louisiana), Fannie Stanford (b. abt 1915, Arkansas), Susie Stanford (b. abt 1917, Texas), Boyce Stanford (b. abt 1919, Arkansas), Bernard Stanford, and Artie C. Aug 1970, Arkansas) married Josephine Ophelia Burns (b. 25 Mar 1896, Arkansas, d. Sep 1975, Louisiana).

Any information about this family would be appreciated.

William Rufus King Stanford

This is not my line, but the guy interested me. I hope this is info is useful to someone:

William Rufus King Stanford (1849-1938)
(aka Billy Rufus Stanford, W.R.K. Stanford, W.R. Stanford)

William Rufus King Stanford, born 14 Jan 1849 in Girard, Russell, Alabama, worked at the Columbus, Muscogee, Georgia Naval Iron Works. His brother, John Henry Stanford, was working at the Naval Iron Works at $5 a day as a boilermaker. Their father, Thomas, was the Number 1 Blacksmith and received $10 a day.

Billy enlisted on 11 Mar 1862 (at the age of 13) in Captain McGhee's Company C of the Naval Works Battalion, CSN, commanded by Maj. Samuel Whiteside. [There is some disagreement between Civil War buffs as to whether this Battalion was a part of the Confederate Navy or was a Georgia State Militia unit. Purportedly, Billy was the last surviving member of the Confederate Navy.]

In the summer of 1864, General William T. Sherman of the Union Army invaded Georgia. All of the Confederate militia, including the Naval Works Battalion, were called up to defend against the invaders. The Naval Battalion manned the defense line as Union General Rosseau's troops came within 30 miles of Columbus. The battalion was also called out to assist against the Union siege of Savannah in late 1864. Savannah was subsequently captured but the battalion was able to return to Columbus.

Billy's parents were Thomas W. Stanford, who was born about 1815 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and his wife Rebecca Jane Poitevant, who was born in Wilmington, North Carolina about 1820. According to one text ["A History of Texas and Texans", Vol. III, Frank W. Johnson, 1914], Thomas W. Stanford was one of the owners and founders of the Columbus Iron Works in Columbus, Muscogee, Georgia, one of the early industrial establishments of the city. That Thomas was fairly wealthy is indicated by the 1850 Slave Census, which lists that he owns three slaves.

The family appears in the 1850 census living in Beat 1, Russell, Alabama and the record includes Thomas Stanford (34, mechanic), Rebecca (30), James T. (7), John H. (6), Oglevrine (3), and William (2). All of the children were born in Alabama, indicating that Thomas and Rebecca settled there before 1843.

In 1860, the census lists the family living in Southern Division, Russell, Alabama and includes Thomas W. Stanford (46, mechanic), Rebecca I. (40), Thomas J. (16), John H. (14), William R. (12), Oglivie (11), Mildred (9), Frances F. (6), Virginia R. (4), and Sarah (5/12).

The 1870 census finds the family living in Girard, Russell, Alabama and lists Thomas Stanford (55, blacksmith), Rebecca (51), Mary (18), Jennie (11), and Sally (8).

The last census record we have of Thomas and Rebecca is for 1880 when they are living in Elyton and Birmingham, Jefferson, Alabama next door to their son Billy and his family. This record lists T.W. Stanford (65), Rebeca (61), and Jennie (20).

From these records, accounting for the various spellings and nicknames, it appears that Thomas and Rebecca had the following children, all born in Alabama:

1. Thomas James Stanford, b. abt 1843
2. John Henry Stanford, b. abt 1844. In 1864, John Henry Stanford became ill at the Mobile, Alabama Naval Yard while repairing a boiler there. He was brought home, where he soon died of consumption (tuberculosis) at the age of nineteen.
3. William Rufus King Stanford, b. 14 Jan 1849
4. Ogilvie Stanford, b. about 1850
5. Mary/Mildred Stanford, b. about 1851
6. Frances F. Stanford, b. abt 1854 (Frances appears in the 1860 census, but not in the 1870 census, indicating that she may have died young.)
7. Virginia R. Stanford, b. abt 1859
8. Sarah "Sally" Helen Stanford, b. about 1862. Sarah married John M. Oram (1845-1914) in 1878 and moved to Dallas County, Texas.

Billy first married Katie LNU, who was born about 1850 in Georgia, and the couple had one son, Dan, b. abt 1872 in Louisiana. In the1880 census, we find the family living in Elyton and Birmingham, Jefferson, Alabama next door to Billy's parents. This record includes W.R. Stanford (31, boiler maker), Katie (30), and Dan (8).

On 1 Dec 1891, W.R.K. Stanford was awarded patent number 464,123 for the invention of a new type of cooking stove.

Katie evidently died before 1900 since no further census records for her can be found.

Evidently, after Katie's death, Billy lived in Mississippi for a while in the 1890s. There is a Supreme Court of Mississippi record from 2 Jan 1899 where he appealed his conviction for "unlawful cohabitation" in Lauderdale County, Mississippi with one Jennie Jenkins. The record shows that the conviction was reversed.

In 1904, Billy, at the age of 55, married Alma Kate LNU, who was 26 at the time. Alma Kate was born in North Carolina about 1878.

We first find a 1910 census listing for Alma K. Stanford (31) and her daughter Mildred E. Stanford (2) staying with her sister and brother-in-law Mattie and James Langston in Maplesville, Chilton, Alabama. Billy is not listed in this census.

In the 1920 census, we find the family living in Maplesville, Chilton, Alabama and the record includes W.R.K. Stanford (71), Kate (40), Mildred (11), Brantley (9), and Margaret (5).

The 1930 census lists the family living in Beat 7, Chilton, Alabama and lists J.R.K. Stanford (81), Kate (52), Mildred (22), Brant (18), Lavolla (18, Brant's wife), and Margaret (15).

Based on these census records and additional research, it appears that Billy and Kate had the following children, all born in Alabama:

Mildred E. Stanford, b. abt 1908
Brant(ley) Stanford, b. 29 Apr 1911, d. 29 Mar 2006 in St. James, Pine Island, Lee, Florida. Brant first married Lavolla LNU in abt. 1929 and later married Jane LNU.
Margaret Stanford, b. 29 Jul 1914, d. 6 Dec 2003. Margaret married Robert Olin Williams (1905-1970)

Billy died in Mar 1838 in Jefferson County, Alabama, while Alma Kate Stanford died in Sep 1937 in Autauga County, Alabama.
Hello. I came by the post where you named Earl Stanford as your Uncle, and you getting as far as William C. Stanford and Mary Phelps.

I am Earl's Great Great Grandson. My Grandfather is Raymond, and my father is Robert.
Matt
Howard Jack Stanford prepared a small book about the Stanford Family Genealogy which I was lucky to obtain a copy from Jack many years ago. I have verified everything in the book.My line goes William Bradford 111, William Bradford Stanford Jr.,William Bradford Stanford, Hiram Bradford Stanford, Bradford Stanford, Gamaleil Bradford Stanford, Joshua Stanford, Joshua Stanford, Robert Stanford, Robert Stanford who Married Rececca Barlett who's grandfather Robert Bartlett came over on the Mayflower.

Jack's Father was Howard Joseph Stanford then Alpheus Ezra
Stanford then Bradford.

I wish I could help but I don't find an Earl Stanford in my family tree. I'm not sure where you saw him as my uncle. I also don't have a Mary Phelps.

Best of luck. I'm a little stuck on that branch as well.
Suzan

I don't believe the book is for sale anywhere but the Stanford University Museum has a copy of it. That is where I copied many, many pages of it.
