Pumphrey's other son, William Lawson Stanphill had a son named James Pumphrey Stanphill who married Eula F Gatlin on 13 May 1908 in Whitney, Hill Co, TX. They had 8 children.
How are you related? Pumphrey is my g g grandfather.

Engler's line back to Switzerland.

Betty Joe Gentry
BettyJoe915@aol.com
Hey...we all do that... and it sure beats not having a CLUE as to even what decade someone was born in or where. You can at least have a better idea as to whether you've even got the right person you are looking for....especially if it's a common name. Stanphill is a whole lot easier to research than SMITH and I have 6 or 8 different branches of that in my trees!!!!!

Please thank you mom for me.

Gaye,
I guess I actually have more info than you. The Englers started out in Overton Co., TN but some of the later children were born in TX and AK. Maggie was born in TN and she was #9 born January 3, 1894. Jefferson Engler was born in Illinois and he and Mary Ellen both died in OK. Andrew Stanphill was born 10/20/1892 in AK and died 4/30/1979 in New Mexico. He and Flora were married 11/26/1911 in AK so the family definitely moved around. Ira's first wife, Zelma was also born in Illinois [that's where I'm from].

Don't know why your e-mail bounced back but if you want more of my info, let me know or try BettyJoe915@aol.com again.
No wonder they called her Maggie! I e-mailed you but it was returned. Ray was born 9-5-1912, Ira in 1914 and Andrew 1921. That is all Mother could come up with. There is an autobiography by Ira called "This Side of Heaven." It was made into a video. I was able to view a borrowed copy. Same material as the book. . Raymond Ira, his son is still alive but probably wants no contacts. Ira has two daughters. Judy and Cathy. Cathy sang on the tribute disk that Jeron Davis had made.
Gaye,
I found Mary Ellen Pryor's file. She had at least 15 children...8 of whom were daughters. Maud Pearl [or Pearl Maud] was the oldest and Flora Magdalinda was one of the younger ones. It all comes down to the fact that your stepfather and Ira had the same gr-gr-gr-grandparents [James and Nancy Pryor of Overton Co., TN] as I. Mary Ellen's parents were John and Candis Malone Pryor of Overton Co., TN. However...if Flora Maggie Engler[ and therefore her siblings] was half Sioux it had to have come down through Jefferson Engler rather than Mary Ellen Pryor although the Pryors and Malones both do have some Cherokee in their bloodline. Hope I haven't confused you even more.

I've got to dig back into the Pryor files but I believe they've got the daughter of Mary Ellen Pryor and Jefferson Engler who married Stanphill listed as MAUD PEARL. Was Maggie Flora a sister and someone was confused as to which sister married whom? Also, if Maggie Flora was HALF Sioux she would have had to have gotten that from the Engler side since I know that although Mary Ellen Pryor was part Indian, she definitely was not a full blooded Sioux or any other tribe. OR....next question.... Did Jefferson Engler have TWO wives??

I'm sooooooo confused! I'll definitely did out the Pryor files and see if I can find a Maggie Flora. In the meantime, if you prefer you can e-mail me directly at
BettyJoe915@aol.com

I'll ask mother. Maggie Flora Engler was 1/2 Sioux indian. I recall home movies of her mom sitting on the porch of an unpainted shack, shelling peas. This was in Arkansas. Alas, those are faded and gone.

Do you have birthdates on the Stanphill sons, too?

Now, all I have to do is figure out how many times removed they are as cousins to me...lol!

Andrew C. Stanphill married Maggie Engler and had Ray, Ira (the song writer and evangelist), and Andrew. Ray (my stepfather) is deceased, Ira died in 1994 and Andrew still lives with wife Mary in Albuquerque. My mom managed Uncle Ira's sheet music business (and my stepfather used a printing press in the garage) for a time in Fort Worth when Ira had a church there. His songs were written out of great personal tragedy. His first wife went into nightclub singing and eventually divorced him. He could not work as an Assembly of God pastor during that time
