Stanton, John and Rhoda
I have a direct line, outlined in census data, but am absolutely stumped by a John Stanton, born in Connecticut in about 1778. The lineage is below:
Howard Stanton is in the 1930 Gloversville, Fulton County, NY Census as a boy of 8 with his father Gardiner E. Stanton (34 years old) and wife Nellie (1930 census).
Gardner (sic) is in the 1910 Gloversville, Fulton County, NY Census as a boy of 14 with his father Albert E. Stanton (64 years old) and wife Attie (1910 Census).
Gardner is also in the 1900 Gloversville, Fulton County NY Census as a boy of 4, but this time he’s listed as “Earl G.” rather than “Gardner E.” along with father Albert (45 years old) and wife, now spelled Hattie (1900 census). Changing the names around then was not rare. Also, in 1910 Albert magically had aged 20 years in 10; so I think that was an error in recording since Attie/Hattie as well as all Gardner’s siblings (Harry, Frances, and Marion) are all the same in both records and have all aged 10 years. Later you’ll see that Albert was 5 in 1860 (1900 census).
Albert is in the 1880 Mayfield, Fulton County, NY Census at 24 years old, still living with his father H.J. Stanton (55years old) and mother Alzina (1880 census). This was a challenge, since we don’t know H.J.’s first name at this point, and there are literally hundreds of H. Stantons.
I kept thinking he’d be a Henry, but after a really tedious search, I hit the jackpot in the 1870 Census for Johnstown, Fulton County, NY. It’s Hiram J. (you’ll see the tiny J in the upper right corner of the box (44 years old) with wife Alzina, Albert at age 14, and all the same siblings listed in 1880 (1870 census).
In the 1860, they were in Luzerne, Warren County, NY, and there were 3 generations all living together. Albert was 5 years old then, Hiram, his father was 35, and there is a 25 year old Anna, who I’m presuming is the Alzina who’s 10 years older 10 years later. There also Emma and ?Erna, who have each aged 10 years by 1870. With these folks is John Stanton (age 83) and Rhoda, his wife (age 75) (1860 census). All these folks are noted to be born in Connecticut, whereas Albert and the family are noted as born in NY in the 1870 census.
Finally, in 1850, again in Luzerne, Fulton County, NY, are John Stanton (then 72) and Rhoda (age 64) with Hiram at 25 years old (1850 census).
In all the Stanton reference books I can find no reference to this John Stanton who was born in about 1778 in Connecticut. He must be a descendent of the original Thomas. Can anyone help here?
