I would love a picture. Thanks. The death certificate transcript I got lists his parents as Isaac and Melissa...no maiden name for her. The line is Lorenzo to Emerson to Rachel. Have you found any census records for him before 1900?? Contact me at tinamarieshepperd17@yahoo.com.

Hi (sorry I don't have your name)
Following their time at Hutton Poplars School, my Aunt Nellie went into service and my Dad Dennis Shepherd & his brother Henry both went into the Army as bandsmen. I believe that the school had a brass band. I understand that quite a number of the children were sent to Canada, some of them having learned carpentry, shoe-repairing etc.
My grandmother did not have much to do with the children until they left school and became wage earners. Although my grandfather was still alive, my grandmother formed a relationship with another man by whom she had a son. She brought this son up and lavished all her attention upon him. As you can imagine this had a very profound effect upon her other children and rather blighted their lives. The saddest thing of all is that their father was found drowned in the River Thames in 1939 at the age of 61 yrs. He was described as a dock labourer of no fixed abode.
I have found that when researching your family history you have to be prepared to come across some very sad and disquieting facts.
I hope that your searches are successful and have happier outcomes.
You may already have found information about the Hutton Poplars School on the web. I understand that the building is now used as a community centre with part of the building available as a wedding venue.
Best wishes
Maureen

Hi
Yes , my grangfather & his sister Nellie both went to the Poplar school at Brentwood(Shenfield) in Essex from about 1906 & I believe stayed there until they left at 16 or 17 yrs old, my grandfather, Arthur was still there in the 1911 census. He learnt the trade of carpentry and like many of the boys I believe, went from there into the Royal Navy as a carpenter/joiner. His sister learnt skills of a housemaid etc. and went 'into service'.
Like your story, my grandfather seems to have kept a lot of it quiet, the records from their admission to the workhouse say their mother was 'abandoned', we were always told that he and his sister were orphaned, however I now know this wasn't quite true as his mother was still alive in 1911 and I have a seamans mission bible that his father had given him, inscribed 'from your dear old dad 1910'. I am sure there was to their generation a certain amount of stigma to the poverty they had experianced & I wonder if he had feelings of hurt & anger to his mother but I also wonder if she did it to give her children a chance to get out of the poverty she had struggled with.

Read yr message while I was looking for anything to do with Poplar Workhouse. My Dad Dennis Shepherd then aged 3 yrs was in Poplar Workhouse in 1911 census. No other members of his family were there at the time although I traced his 6 rd old brother Henry to a school/hospital in Essex. Could find no trace of his mother of older sister. Believe that father had already deserted the family by this time. However shortly afterwards the 2 boys and their sister were sent to the Hutton Poplars School at Brentwood in Essex. This was an institution set up by George Lansbury MP (father of actress Angela Lansbury) for orphaned or impoverished children from Poplar in East London. Sadly, the brothers and their sister were cared for in separate parts of the school and didn't find out that they were related until they were in their teens. I don't know if this is the place where your relations were educated and cared for.
I'm still trying to find out why my dad was left apparently alone at the age of 3.

Hi...I' sure you're aware there were more than one Thomas Stantons in Stonington. The original Thomas Stanton was born in 1616 and came over from England in 1634/35. He married Ann Lord in 1637 and they had 10 children. The first of those 10 children was another Thomas Stanton, born in Stonington in 1638 and died April 11, 1718. He indeed had a brother named Robert, child #8, who was born in 1653 and died September 12, 1677. I have lots more info if you are interested. My tree, Stanton Family Tree, is a public one on the ancestry.com website. I am generation #11, Karen Carrell (Stanton) Cook.
Hope this helps you.

Stanton, John and Rhoda

I have a direct line, outlined in census data, but am absolutely stumped by a John Stanton, born in Connecticut in about 1778. The lineage is below:
Howard Stanton is in the 1930 Gloversville, Fulton County, NY Census as a boy of 8 with his father Gardiner E. Stanton (34 years old) and wife Nellie (1930 census).
Gardner (sic) is in the 1910 Gloversville, Fulton County, NY Census as a boy of 14 with his father Albert E. Stanton (64 years old) and wife Attie (1910 Census).
Gardner is also in the 1900 Gloversville, Fulton County NY Census as a boy of 4, but this time he’s listed as “Earl G.” rather than “Gardner E.” along with father Albert (45 years old) and wife, now spelled Hattie (1900 census). Changing the names around then was not rare. Also, in 1910 Albert magically had aged 20 years in 10; so I think that was an error in recording since Attie/Hattie as well as all Gardner’s siblings (Harry, Frances, and Marion) are all the same in both records and have all aged 10 years. Later you’ll see that Albert was 5 in 1860 (1900 census).
Albert is in the 1880 Mayfield, Fulton County, NY Census at 24 years old, still living with his father H.J. Stanton (55years old) and mother Alzina (1880 census). This was a challenge, since we don’t know H.J.’s first name at this point, and there are literally hundreds of H. Stantons.
I kept thinking he’d be a Henry, but after a really tedious search, I hit the jackpot in the 1870 Census for Johnstown, Fulton County, NY. It’s Hiram J. (you’ll see the tiny J in the upper right corner of the box (44 years old) with wife Alzina, Albert at age 14, and all the same siblings listed in 1880 (1870 census).
In the 1860, they were in Luzerne, Warren County, NY, and there were 3 generations all living together. Albert was 5 years old then, Hiram, his father was 35, and there is a 25 year old Anna, who I’m presuming is the Alzina who’s 10 years older 10 years later. There also Emma and ?Erna, who have each aged 10 years by 1870. With these folks is John Stanton (age 83) and Rhoda, his wife (age 75) (1860 census). All these folks are noted to be born in Connecticut, whereas Albert and the family are noted as born in NY in the 1870 census.
Finally, in 1850, again in Luzerne, Fulton County, NY, are John Stanton (then 72) and Rhoda (age 64) with Hiram at 25 years old (1850 census).
In all the Stanton reference books I can find no reference to this John Stanton who was born in about 1778 in Connecticut. He must be a descendent of the original Thomas. Can anyone help here?

Hi Gary - The Thomas Sta(u)nton of the line I am using was born in 1729 in Ireland and was a son of Thomas Staunton b- abt. 1696 in Ireland, marr. abt. 1724 to Jane, b. abt. 1700 in Ireland. I do not know when 1696 Thomas died, but before 1784 would sound reasonable. The 1729 Thomas was a 2nd son of Thomas b. 1696 in Ireland. His (Thomas' - 1729) great, great grandfather was George Staunton b. abt. 1603 in England and mar. abt. 1633 to Eleanor Lynch, b. abt 1607 in Ireland. This George (b-1603) is the one who I think came to Ireland about 1623 or so, as part of the Viscount's group to do repairs in Galway City. Previously, I mistakenly referred to the above George as Thomas - sorry. There are many Thomases and Johns and several Georges. The George Leonard Stanton is of the same line dating back to a John Stanton, b. abt. 1475 in England. George Leonard was born in Ireland, but was buried back in England @ Westminister Abby - interesting!! I can not prove any of what I think, but dates and times seem to fit. I used about 4 or 5 timelines to establish events happening @ certain dates. It takes hours to figure this stuff and I've worked on it about 8 years and still can't find the proof I need!!! Do you know the parents of Jesse Longstreet Stanton? He was before Civil War, so could not have Longstreet name from the Gen. - must have been a family name - maybe his mother's?? I find him, but not the parents - thought he might have come from some the western MD Stantons, who migrated to Ohio and might have gone south along Zane's Trace to Tenn.?? Keep in touch - Sara

Hi! Thanks for the note. I don't think these names of Atwell, Beauchamp, Dorothy are a part of what i already have. However, the James is so close to what I have and another known line has the Price name. do you know what area of US these families were located? I do know that there was a Thomas Stanton with Beauchamp name attached who lived during the late 1700's on the eastern shore of Maryland? My thomas Stanton group were located in SW PA and western Maryland. I will check later to see what seems to fit or not. Thanks again! So many mysteries! Sara

My great-grandmother was Kate Carlyn Stanton, whose father was Warren Stanton (died 10 May 1864) and mother was Mary Emeline (Wellman) Stanton. Warren Stanton was a merchant and minor office holder. I know nothing about his parentage. I had found your ancestor Andrew Stanton (at least I think it was he) mentioned in (a reprint of) History of Ashtabula County, Ohio, published in 1878, where he (“Andrew Stanton”) is listed on p. 205 in a paragraph entitled “Other Early Settlers.” It has occurred to me that he could be my Warren’s father. I think the dates would work: I don’t know when Warren was born, but he and Mary Emeline Wellman (born 1819) were married 17 Feb 1847.
I’d appreciate any information, ideas, suggestions, leads.
Thanks
Stanton H.
Warren Stanton

I am looking for information about my great-great grandfather, Warren Stanton, who married Mary Emeline Wellman, probably in Kingsville, Ashtabula County, Ohio (which is where they lived afterwards) on 17 Feb 1847. He died on 10 May 1864. He was a businessman and minor officeholder. Family lore says he went to New York once a year to purchase goods to sell. Also, he is said to have gotten on the wrong side of a mob - probably in New York City - because of publicly expressing unpopular views on slavery (i.e. that slaves should be freed via the remuneration of slaveowners for their "property") one day during the Civil War (or in the runup to it), and come within an inch of being lynched; he then was imprisoned in a prison camp for a time, which weakened him so that he eventually died some time after release. He may have been the son of an early settler (second decade of the 19th century) of Ashtabula County, Ohio, an Andrew Stanton. Otherwise I know nothing about him, and I would very much appreciate any help.
Thanks,
Stan Barrett

I took a look at the Document at 200% magnification, and I really think it looks like an A between his name not an O? O's connect to the next letter via the top... but A's while in cursive connect from the bottom, and if you look at the letter it is connecting from the bottom up, I can very well see where someone would think it was Roy but I would appreciate, if anyone is willing to take some time to observe it also? tell me if I am wrong? right? or should I just trash the record from my tree? thank you very much.

Ive had a major breakthrough in my investigation! I was researching the family of the other Dna match I have, Sean Stanton and his paternal line came from Overton Tn where my ggg grandmother was from! The earliest person I can find was Jesse Longstreet Stanton who was born in Sparta Tn and moved to Overton Tn then after the civil war went to Ill. He must be the father of Robert Gray Albertson it too much of a coincidence I think.

I have found a source that states that the Thomas Stanton in the familysearch.org pedigree died sometime before 1784 in Ireland so he was not your Thomas Stanton but he could still be from the same family of course. If you want to check the source go to familysearch.org and then search records then historical books. search for staunton and then look for memoir of george leonard staunton.

Does anyone have follow-up info for children of Phineas Stanton, 1780-1842 (s/o Phineas and Ester Gallop Stanton)? When Phineas died, the kids all went their own way. George is listed as unmarried, but I think George is my ggg grand father. Thomas Stanton of Stonington, CT genealogy.

Re: Thomas Stanton of Maryland?

Hi, I've sent one query to you already. I'm not certain it was through proper routing though. My name is James Stanton. I'm trying to trace my heritage and in my search, I came across Thomas Stanton from Maryland born 1729. the info I found says Thomas was married to Ann and they had five children. One of those was James Stanton, born about 1776? James is from whre my lineage is suppose to come. Any information that you can provide that may help me make a positive connection would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim Stanton
