I'm trying to find out more about Mary STANWOOD (b. abt 1759), daughter of John Stanwood (b.1722) and Ann Atkinson. On 29 Aug 1779 in Newburyport, she married Patrick TOBIN. They had one known child, Patrick Tobin, b. 1781, who married 1804 Elizabeth Coffin and had at least 4 children. Patrick Tobin died, and then his widow as Mrs Mary Stanwood, married 16 Feb 1789 in Newburyport, John GIBSON. Their first son was named Patrick Tobin Gibson, b. 1780. Three children are listed under John and Mary Gibson in Newburyport births. Are the children of John and Marcy Gibson also theirs? What happened to the kids? Who was John Gibson?<br><br>Ethel Stanwood Bolton, History of the Stanwood Family in America (Boston: Rockwell and Churchill Press, 1899), p.78,<br>"[autobiography of grandson, Rev Henry Stanwood talking about family, said] "the family consisted of....four daughters...one [married] a Mr Gibson, who was blind for many years...."

Re: Mary Stanwood and William Given

I think that Mary and Margaret are the same person. According to an extracted marriage record for Brunswick,in the Family Search IGI (Batch M502962, Source 0010596), Will Given and Mary Stanwood were married on 30 December 1785. I do not find another likely Will/William Given in my Given records. I found several items concerning the Stanwood Family in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register. The first "The Brunswick Stanwoods" by Ellen Dunlap Hopkins. It is in Volume 50, pp. 540-543 [1896]. There are follow-up notes in Volumes 52, 53. and 121. Perhaps you know about these articles. If not, the Register may be available in a historical library near you. I have a membership in NEHGS and looked them up on line. I have a copy of the page in Ethel Stanwood Bolton's book showing the information on William and Elizabeth's stones, but it would be nice to have a photograph taken in the Brunswick burying ground, particularly since I have so many ancestors in the Brunswick area. I was sad to read that two of Margaret and James' brothers were lost at sea in 1777. There must be quite a story behind the sinking of the "Sea Flower."

Because these are such common names, it's hard to be sure that Mary and Margaret are the same person, though it is suspcious that they would be born the same year and marry someone with the same name. If they are the same...I have some photos of Margaret Stanwood Given's parents's headstones (William Stanwood &amp; Elizabeth Read/Reed) that I could email you, if you are interested. My line of descent comes through Margaret's parents and then through her brother James. I had John &amp; David Given/Giveen in my database, but until your message I didn't know how they connected to William - so thank you for your help.

Thank you for checking on Mary/Margaret Stanwood. I reviewed the information I've received on the Given family and believe that you are correct. One reference refers to her as Mary Stanwood and another refers to her as Margaret Stanwood. The reference calling her Mary indicates she was born in 1765, the same year you listed for Margaret. William Given was the son of John Giveen and Sarah Spear. John Given/Giveen and his twin brother Robert immigrated to Brunswick from Coleraine, Londonderry Ireland with their father David ca. 1719.

I looked in Bolton's "History of the Stanwood Family In America" and the only information I found (via the index) for William Given was his marriage to Mary Stanwood on the date you mentioned. From the Brunswick Town Records I have a Margaret Stanwood (daughter of William Stanwood &amp; Elizabeth Reed) born 08 Jan 1765 who was married to William Given (1760-1837). I was wondering if Mary and Margaret might be the same person. Do you have any other information about Mary or William that I could follow up on for you?

Mary Stanwood married William Given 30 December 1785, Brunswick, Cumberland, Maine. The marriage date is in the Brunswick records, but I can't find a record of her birth. Does anyone know the names of Mary's parents? If you have a copy of "The Stanwood Family in America," would you please check to see if this family is listed. Many thanks.
