Hello Debbie and All

Well, I believe I found the parents of Lillian “Lillie” Edith Stark. They were Joseph Stark and Sarilda Guthrie. Both parents were born in Indiana. Joseph was born in 1837 and Sarilda was born about 1847. The 1870 census for Tecumseh, Shawnee County, Kansas reported Joseph had real estate valued at $6,000 and personal property valued at $1,500. I would say he would have been considered well to do for that period. In this census, the family is listed as follows:

======================
Source Citation: Year: 1870; Census Place: Tecumseh, Shawnee, Kansas; Roll: M593_442; Page: 148; Image: 296. Enumerated June 20, 1870.
Line 24, Stark, Joseph, m, w, 33, farmer, Real Estate: $6,000; Personal: $1,500, Indiana
Line 25, Stark, Sarilda, f, w, 23, Indiana
Line 26, Stark, Ada, f, w, 6, At school, Indiana
Line 27, Stark, Lilly, f, w, 2, Illinois
Line 28, Stark, Willie, m, w, 1 month, Kansas

Note they have a daughter named Lilly, age 2 --- born in Illinois --- and a daughter named Ada, age 6. I looked in Kansas because in the 1920 census, May (Stark) Koonce reported she was born in Kansas. This was how I came upon this record. I surmised that if James M. Ward knew the family, they must have moved to Williamson County, Illinois after May was born in 1872. However, I could not find a family with the surname Stark in the 1880 census for Williamson County. I then did a search in the Williamson County, Illinois 1880 census on the given name Joseph. One of the names returned as a result of this search was Joseph Starrick married to Sarrilda Starrick. I examined the original record and found the following:

Dwelling 175; Family 185
Line 13: James M. Ward, age 13, son of Thomas Ward and Mary Ward.
===========================

The first three children are clearly the same as those reported in the 1870 census and the place of births also match. Note there is a daughter name “Mate” born in Kansas in 1872. This most likely was May Stark who married George Koonce. Adda Stark most likely married J. H. White in 1885. Note the “Starrick” family was living one dwelling away from W. R. Ward. W. R. Ward was most likely a relative of Thomas Ward, the father of James M. Ward. This would seem to provide opportunity for James M. Ward --- perhaps at a later date --- to have worked for Joseph Stark as related in Debbie’s e-mail. For these reasons, and the similarity of “Starrick” to Stark, I believe I have found Lillian Edith Stark’s family.

Joseph Stark who married Sarilda Gurthrie, according to the WorldConnect file of Gwen Boyer Bjorkman was the son of Caleb Stark and Anne B. Boone. See Gwen’s web site at URL

The ancestry of Lillian “Lillie” Edith Stark would be the following:

Lillian Stark was the daughter of Joseph Stark and Sarilda Guthrie
Joseph Stark was the son of Caleb Stark and Anne Boone
Caleb Stark was the son of Joseph Stark and Hanna Unknown
Joseph Stark was the son of Jonathan Stark and Sarah Lacock
Jonathan Stark was the son of William Stark (Junior) and Experience Lamb
William Stark (Junior) was the son of William Stark (Senior) and Elizabeth Unknown
William Stark (Senior) was the son of Aaron Stark [1608-1685) and Sarah Unknown.

Debbie, welcome to the family!!!
