Rose Verlynn Black was born in Youngstown, Ohio (Mahoning County) to the late Lillie Dean Starks and Peter Watkins Starks, the youngest of four children departed this life on Oct. 14, 2012.

Doll was married to the late James B. Black and to this union was born a son, James Brian Black.

She was affectionately known as “Doll” by her family and friends and “Mommy Doll” by her grandchildren.

Doll received Christ at an early age at the Jerusalem Baptist Church in Youngstown, Ohio where she attended as a child. She later joined the Olivet Institutional Baptist Church in Cleveland, under the pastorate of the late Reverend Dr. Odie M. Hoover and continued under the leadership of the Reverend Dr. Otis Moss Jr. and the Reverend Dr. Jawanza K. Colvin.
She was a member of the January Birthmonth Ministry and Usher Board No. 2 and participated in various other ministries. She loved attending worship services even as her health began to fail.

She was educated in the Youngstown area and a National Honor Society graduate of East High School.
After graduating, she moved to Cleveland, where she attended Cleveland State, Cuyahoga Community College and the Cleveland School of Travel Agents. After receiving her certification to the travel industry, her tenaciousness directed her to the judicial system, where she enrolled in the Cleveland School of Stenotype. Upon completion, she became the First Black Official Court Reporter in the Common Pleas Court.

Before her appointment with the court system, she was a free lance court reporter with Newkirk Fincun Court Reporting Firm, where she was required to make verbatim transcripts of depositions for tax court, the National Labor Relations Board and many other government agencies. After 28 years of service with the Common Pleas Court, she retired and was hired by Cuyahoga Community College as an instructor in the department of court reporting for five years.

Doll was active in various organizations, including volunteering with the Greater Cleveland Red Cross and the Cleveland Cancer Society.
She was also a member of the Girl Friends, Birthday Club, W.I.D. and the Dinner Bells. Doll loved to travel.
She traveled extensively to such places as Hong Kong, Egypt, Spain, Switzerland, Denmark, France and Jamaica. The many who had the privilege of knowing Doll were blessed with her sensitivity, outgoing personality, love and devotion to family and friends.
