Wisher Cemetery is my family's cemetery. My grandma and grandpa Starnes (Edna and Baxter) are buried there as well as my daddy, Bobby Gene Starnes, sisters Angela and Cathy. I was adopted and would like to trace the tree back as far as possible. By the dates I can only assume that ZBV Starnes and Sallie W. Starnes were the parents of Baxter, but not certain. I'm also hoping to find the names of my grandmother's parents (maiden name Edna Painter).

Maybe she is Elizabeth, the daughter of John H. Starnes, Sr.(b 1741) and Temperiah (b 1735). John was born in Bresha Creek, Chester Co., SC. Other children were Peter Starnes and John H. Starnes, Jr.

John H. Starnes, Jr. moved to Marshall County, AL.

She would have been about 35 when moving to AL.

Herman died in 2007. If you are from the Daniel Starnes that settled in Lafayette County, MS., That line is not connected with the Charleston, SC Daniel.
This Daniel's father was Paul Starnes born in Cabarrus County, NC. Paul's father was Charles Starnes that died in 1803, but we have not been able to find his father.

Daniel, Charles and Sister Sophia Starnes Carriker left NC around 1861 and moved to the Oxford, MS area. There are about 500 areas of land still in either Daniel or Charles decendants hands in this area.
Peggy just read your old message. I am from the same line of Starnes as you. Emmerline Starnes was a sister to my great grandfather Loranzo "Randy" Starnes. He is buried in the family cemetery behind the big power plant on highway 29 in Covington County, AL. Some of the land is still in the family. I have most of the information that you listed. Russell Johns gave me the information.

If you are interested you can e-mail me at cbriggs5@aol.com

I live in NC, but my mother was born in Aiken county, SC that was where the Starnes were before some going to AL. I had never heard that Emmerline was married twice. It was not listed in anything that my mother gave me. She was born in 1904 and died in 2000. I have about 3,000 names in my listings.

So I guess we are distant cousins. Delane Carter

Thanks for the information! I have the book also. I noticed they had Nancy listed as a Melton but I had also found their marriage record. I think the mix up was due to her death certificate. He grandson (Frank) listed her maiden name as Melton. That was actually his mother's (my gg grandmother's) maiden name.

Thanks for the census and CSA information. I knew he died as a POW. I wasn't sure if they buried them in one massive grave or individually. Much obliged! :)

Ephraim and Nancy Melton/Holden Starnes are in the book Of Them That Left a Name Behind by Starnes & Starnes, page 742-746. It mentions that he married Nancy Melton; however, the marriage record does have Holdin (md. 7/3/1859).

In the 1860 census of Union Co., Monroe Dist, NC, p. 127 he is listed as Ephraim Starnes age 35, Nancy age 35, John R. age 4 and O. Franklin age 1. Also, next door is Charles Starnes, age 64 - possible for his father? and Isam Starnes age 28.

His CSA record does say he died 12 Jan 1865 and is buried the CSA section 1488 of Woodlawn National Cemetery, Elmira, NY.

Now perhaps you can help me: you mention a "Frank" in your reply. I have someone looking for the family of James Frank Starnes whose mother was Margaret. Margaret married 2nd to George Barrett in Crawford Co., GA. The moved to Winn Parish, LA by 1850. Do you have a James Frank Starnes in your tree?

1880 Union Co., NC, Monroe Township, p. 65 (63 of 81 pgs): Res. 586 King, James G. age 41 family; Starnes, James b. m. age 12, servant; Violet Starnes b. f. age 45, keeping house; Josephine Starnes b. f. age 22, daughter; Pollie Starnes b. f. age 16, daughter.

It is a well known family history in the Thomas Starnes family that he was a large slave owner and had mulatto children with his female slaves. His plantation was in the Bethelehem Baptist Church area of Union Co., NC.

At any rate, the slave took the names of their owner. Could this have happened to your ancestor?

The way the name has been spelled has been a discussion among Starnes descendants for years. We find the STARNS spelling mostly from the Tennessee descendants of Thomas and Adam. As they moved into North Carolina, it is spelled STARNES. They were of the German line. The English line, Shubael Stearns influenced the spelling change in Alabama. If you have access to the book, "Of Them That Left a Name Behind", it gives great detail about the children of Frederick Staring/Starns & Mary Goldman Starnes.

I believe corruption of spelling is due to the people who took the information and recorded it. The James Frank Starnes I was looking for was born 1835 in Georgia so we do not connect. I'll see what I can come up with for your James Starnes b. 1909 in SC/NC.

I found a 1860 Tyler, Texas census listing a Rial (B. 1825, Ga)and Calantha (b 1830, Tenn) Starnes, children are Richard A (B 1848, Tx), Newton J (1849, Tx), Thomas D (b 1852, Tx), Mary A (b 1854, Tx), Nancy E (b. 1857, Tx).
I found an 1880 Arkansas census listing Richard A (b 1848, T) married a Martha (b 1852, Tx), children are James E (B 1874, Tx), Daulphin (son, B. 1875, Tx), Wm A. (B 1878, Ark).
Then I found a 1900 Arkansas census, listing Richard now married to Louisa C in 1885 (B 11/1853, Miss), his father is from Ga mother from Tenn like in the 1860 census, children Perla (B 6/1888, Tx), John W (B 7/1892, Ark), Thomas E (B 10/1894, Ark) Hetra O (b 3/1896, Ark), and older son Wm. A. (B 1/1878, Tx - presumably his son with Martha).
Then I found an 1920 Oklahoma census listing Richard at 71 yrs old married to Leal S (b 1851, Tx), his father listed from Ga, mother from Tenn), child is Tom E (b. 1884, Tx).

Hope some of this helps.

Victoria (Starnes) Wright
