My father's name was Leroy Starr, my Grandfather was Roy Starr and my Great Grandfather was Wilcox Starr. Wilcox was born in Indiana in 1873 but moved to Dade County, Missouri. I currently live in Marland.

As I child I was told that we were related to Sam Starr and that we were part Cherokee, but so far I have not been able to find any information to suppor that. In fact, what I am finding is that we may be descended from a German immigrant named Casper Stoehr. But I'm still looking for the connection.

Hi Frank. I'm doing good. Busy, busy, busy with family genealogy, and I'm trying to consolidate the data into book form. Long and tedious using MS Word. I tried Family Tree but the conversion from my existing genealogy application became disjointed and confusing.
As for the politics of findagrave and rootsweb I have no idea. I know that findagrave uses personal input from people who physically walked the cemetery and from people who just added their inputs. If you feel it is not worth it to post your STARR records, I have no problem with that. I just wondered how some of the Yuba City records are posted but none of the STARR family was. Now I know.
Raymond

I just completed a search of the Yuba City Cemetery via www.findagrave.com and there are no STARR listing. Since you have all the gravesite information for the STARR family and relatives, could you add them to www.findagrave.com?
Regarding the marriage of Gladys Starr to Frank Poole: Do you know if the Starr family ever lived in Windsor, Russian River Township, California? We have a Starr Creek, a Starr School, and a Starr Road but no record of a Starr family. However, we do have records of the Poole family, including men named Frank, who were here as early as 1870. Thank you for any information you can provide.

Barbara Ray
Windsor, California historian

Yuba City cemetery has about 1200 known burials. the records have been lost, so all we have is walking, and for Starr, obituaries and bible notes. there is a cemetery list on the roots web site. there is also an old typed list, probably from the 1960's, at the local museum (no ones seems to know for sure where this list came from maybe it is "public domain." I have maps and a list of 265 deeds for plots in the cemetery.
Roy Starr, a son of GF and EJ, is buried in the Sutter Cemetery, as is Gladys (Starr) Poole, daughter of GF and EJ, and my grandmother.
I am not up on the politics of cemetery lists.
I have a list, which started out with the two above lists, and then I walked the cemetery. I don't know if it would be considered fair for for me to wholesale add my list at this point. for example, it lists people whose stones have now become illegible, so for those people it is derived from the existing lists.
I am doing fine. Hope all is well with you.

care to enlighten me as to the politics of roots vs findagrave? I believe I have seen som signs of friction where someone picked up data off of roots and placed it on findagrave?

i'll try to get the Starr data into the findagrave system.
If I had not mentioned it before, "Edward B (Butler) Starr" may be an error in reading tombstones. I have seen some references to Edward Butler Starr which represent a misreading of the north side of the GF STarr Stone in Yuba City. Edward Butler and Charlotte Butler were the parents of GF Starr's wife, Emily Jane Butler Starr. there information appears on the north side of the stone, and some people have mis-copied it, assuming they were Starrs.
Or, maybe its a reference to GF and Emily Jane's fourth child, Edward Starr, who did live and who had at least one son, and living descendants.

Raymond knows more about the Starr family in cailfornia than I do. My Grandmother, Gladys Starr Poole was the youngest daughter of George Franklin Starr and Emily Jane Butler Starr. So far as I know they lived in Yuba City and in Santa Rosa. GF's father was Orange Starr of Greenfield Township, Huron County, Ohio, and his mother was Mercy DuBois. Orange had at least five sons and a daughter who came to California at or soon after the Gold Rush: Abraham DuBois Starr, of the Starr Mills in Santa Rosa; Edward Starr, a farmer in Saint Helena; GF, a farmer in Sutter County; Augustus Washington, a career officer in the cavlary; William Mck?? Starr, and Sarah Elizabeth Starr walton, wife of B. F. Walton. I think Walter Augustus Starr of the Starr's Guide to the High Sierra was a descendant of William. Note the last two were children of Orange and his second wife, Rebecca.

As for Pooles: Francis Poole jumped ship in SF in 1848 or so, married Mary Keats, and moved to Smartsville, where he had several children, one of whom was William. William became a teamster, then a butcher, and married Sara Green in San Diego. they had my grandfather, Frank Poole. Frank Poole was a cannery manager, and jeweler and farmer in the Yuba City/marysville area.

So, I don't know anything to help you. oh well.

Frank

Our Frank J. Pool owned a store in Windsor, Calif. around 1900. I've seen the name sometimes spelled "Poole" in our area, but on F.J.'s store, the name is clearly "Pool." The I.O.O.F. Hall occupied the second story above his store. A good photo of the store appears in the book "Images of America: Windsor" (Arcardia Publications). F.J. Pool was a respected citizen who was instrumental in establishing the first branch of the Exchange Bank in Windsor, Calif. in 1925. Frank Pool married Bertha Washburn, also of Windsor, Calif. Do you find any Washburns in your data? -Barbara Ray

Hello All,

As I read all of your posts, I am amazed at how far back your family lineage extends. Yet I am all the more disheartened because of my inability to know my entire heritage. I too am a Starr but I come from a slightly different group of Starrs. I am an African American woman with roots that may include Euro-American ancestry. After the recent passing of my grandfather Frank Starr, I became more and more curious about our family's entire history. Due to the racial politics of America, this becomes a cumbersome task.

Before his passing, my grandfather disclosed one major part of our history that seems to be consistent with that of other family members. He informed me that our predecessors lived mainly in Jonesboro, GA and we eventually migrated to Atlanta. This is pretty much all I know of my family's historical lineage. Any information about plantation farms, breading areas, or Georgia labor stations that may connect my family to Euro history would be appreciated.

Thanks.
