Did not give you the right date for John C. Staton b 1906 not 1888. He is on the 1930 census with John W. Staton. That is all I know about him. Have you searched all the census and records for him? I have traced John Wesley Staton on the census and records until his death. Found a photo of his tombstone on Find a Grave.com. I will continue to look for a living relative hoping to find a photo of him.
Thanks
C. Staten

John Wesley Staton was born in Illinois 1872 died April 1, 1952 in Hackett Arkansas. His oldest son from second marriage to Margaret Ann White, was John Calvin Staton, b abt 1888. So the John Wesley Staton you memtioned was probably John Calvin Staton's son if in same family, as he was born in Hackett Arkansas that you seem most likely. Sent message to your email address you gave but mail was returned. I have looked and looked for someone who might have a photo of John Wesley Staton b 1872 died 1952. I believe his youngest son George W Staton and his son by same name is still living. Sent a letter to them, no answer and it was never returned.
If you want to email me that would be okay rcstaten@cmaaccess.com
Regards
Carol Staten spelling of last name changed in our family somewhere along the line.

Re: Harrison Staten

Hi,

This is an effort I've been involved with on and off for 10 years. I keep finding bits and pieces. Neat little tidbits of information. For instance, John William died in 1918 during the great flu epidemic that swept the nation. Sarah was listed as not being able to write in one census.

Harrison (also called Horace) E. (Edward or Edison) Staten was my G-G grandfather. He was born about 1843. Parents are unknown and remain so. He lived in Lexington, Scott County, Indiana. The 1860 census lists him as a farm laborer, age 17, residing in the Storm household, a prominent Scott County family. Apparently Harrison's parents died, or he took work at a young age to leave home.

Sarah Ann Richmond is also listed on this census and she also didn't reside at home either.

Sarah and Harrison married in 1861, making her 19 and him 18. John William was born in 1864. Harrison went into the Union Army in Feb 1865 leaving Sarah and a young (less than one year old) John William alone. He mustered out in August 1865. I have his regimental information and where they were stationed.

They had thier second child in 1867, (Mary) and Emma a few years later. The 1870 census lists Harrison, Sarah, John, Mary, and Emma living on a farm in Scott County. Harrison had some decent land and farmed it. (Too bad he lost it, I can see me farming)

Who knows what happened next? Sarah must have died, or else they divorced. Harrison disappears and apparently resurfaces in Missouri. I'm very curious about where and when.

The 1880 census shows John, age 15 living with a Montgomery family, and the two girls living with the Joesph Richmond family. Then John William disappears until his marriage in 1899. Maybe he went to be with his dad in Missouri?

Too bad the 1890 census was destroyed. Too bad I wasn't interested in this in July 1995, when I saw Katherine (John William's daughter) at my grandmother's funeral down in Palestine, Illinois. I also talked to Rachel that day. The things they could have told me!!!

Questions that aggrevate me are: The 1850 census. Where is a seven year old Harrison? Sarah was born in Kentucky, but I can't find a record of an 8 yr old Sarah in that same census. Harrison was born in Indiana, but to whom?

There are other Staten's listed in Scott County from 1820 on. This was a small county, and Staton/Staten wasn't a common name. How are they related to me? They have to be related. I know Harrison's parents came from Kentucky (father) and Virginia (mother), but not who they are.

The next step is to go to Scott County and conduct some research. They have excellent records and a terrific historical society. There is a Staten in a cemetery there who could be Sarah. I will be heading there in April 2009.

I know Harrison has deed information, probate records for his daughter's, and John might have indentured service records. The papers at the time did survive (some of them). I plan to scan all of the information until I find some solid data.

My E-mail for the next three months is kevin.staten@navy.mil After March 1st I will be a civilian after 26 years service, so it will change then. I would love pictures, it seems almost impossible they exist.

I'll keep everyone posted on my progress.

Since I posted that inquiry, I have discovered that my great grandfather's name was Clarence Staten, born in about 1900 in Tennessee, so there may be a connection with your relatives. Unfortunately, that is as far as I have gotten with them. I haven't heard of any relatives from Louisiana, but anything is possible. Thanks for the info.

If you are researching the George Staten or Staton who was born in Virginia during the 1730s (it would appear) and died nearly 100 years later in Indiana, you might like to know that there is a new URL for my family history text:

www.donnneal.com.

George married Sally Roberson around 1770, and their daughter Rebecca Jane Staton married George Chastain in Virginia in 1791; she is my line. Information about the earlier Statons is problematic.

Deborah Shriner-Staten-Cary Wirt/Wood Co. West Virginia

Deby-Deborah Carey or Cary-Shriner- Staten

Deby was born Dec 1847 in West Va. her mother was born in West Va. and her father was born in New Hampshire.

She married Henry Shriner son of Isaac Shriner after 1855 around the Wirt Co. W.Va. area. I have her in 1900 Slate Dist Wood Co. Va. living with her son Walter Shriner and his wife and Daughters. Her name is Deby Staten and she is listed as being married 30 years

in 1920 She is in Wood Co. W.Va. as Deborah Shriner 75 widowed. She is listed with Henry Shriners wife Ida M. 32 who is married but no husband there. She is widowed in this census.

This is confusing! I think here maiden name is Cary or Carey. She married Henry Shriner after his wife Phoebe Pinkerton died. She bore 9 children.

Anyone have any or think they have any connections to her, I would love to corresponde and see if you can figure it all out. Diane

Searching for Elizabeth Staten born 1798 in Laughton, Cheshire, England.

I'm searching for any information on Elizabeth Staten born 1798 in Laughton, Cheshire, England. Elizabeth married James Thompson born 1794 in Laughton, Cheshire, England. James Thompson was a tailor.
James & Elizabeth had a daughter named Mary Thompson born July 28, 1824 in Laughton, Cheshire, England. There was also another sister Ann Thompson Blood. Several children died.
Mary Thompson married John West and lived with him for 12 years. Mary immigrated to America in 1851 (Utah). She was following her husband John West whom she never found. She sailed aboard the ship "ELLEN". She finally reached Salt Lake City, Utah, and eventually remarried.
Elizabeth Staten's family were suppose to be descendants of the Staten's of Staten Island, New York. The King of England gave them a special land grant.
Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated.
Gratefully,
Mavis Bassett
mavisbassett@yahoo.com
Found a tiny bit more info from the earlier post. George Staten is listed as the widow of Deborah Staten who died Dec. 15 1931 in Parkersburg W.Va. She was nearly 92. Her parents are listed on her death cert. as unknown. I cannot find her and George Staten on any census in W.Va. She is found living with her son Walter Shriner and his wife and with her what I believe to be first husband Henry Shriner in West Va. and also in Jefferson Co. Ohio. Sure hope this rings a bell with some Staten researcher. Thanks. Diane

Wow. I'm an African American Staten from Louisiana. I know that I have relatives in Texas. My branch of Statens started off in Texas but were sold to a plantation in Alto, Louisiana during slavery. There is a huge Staten graveyard in Alto. The family then, of course, grew and after slavery and spread to Start, Louisiana and then to Monroe, Louisiana (about 45 min east of Shreveport). My great- great grandfather had 18 brothers and sisters. There are a lot of Statens in Monroe and the surrounding areas. We have reunions every few years and I know for sure that there are Statens from Texas and I'm sure Tennessee also.

By the 1860 Ballard County, KY, Census he is the son of James & Lurinda Staton. He had three wives who appear to be Mildred A., Elizabeth and Josephine Ann. He is not listed in the Graves County cemetery book but his obituary states he was buried in the city cemetery and UDC records state he is buried in Maplewood, which is the main city cemetery.
Thanks
Greg
