HELP! The estate records of Willoughby SLAYDEN show an Archibald, named as a son, so when I found this family:

Slaton	Archibald	1830	Cen	Hopkins	044 KY m0111001:f0001
Slaton? Also the marriage record for Archibald to Parthinia BERRY is usually transcribed as SLATON (Nov 1831). I would love to be able to drop this entire line from my trees, but there is much argument that these are incorrectly recorded as STATONS, but I think the opposite. Anyone who can put us out of our misery will be greatly appreciated, by showing convincing data that these are all STATONS/STAYTONS.

cslayton19@charter.net
juliaom@windstream.net

William "Willis" Dallas Stayton was born April 1, 1842 in Arkansas, son of Hill Dallas and Sarah A. (Thompson) Stayton. He married Elizabeth "Lizzie" LaBauve on October 19, 1865 in Jackson County, TX. He died January 23, 1872.

The 1870 Census for Jackson County, Wharton P.O., Roll 1593, page 479B, (name spelled STATON), shows a son named Hugh, born about 1868. What happened to Hugh? Did he die young or live to adulthood and marry? Any help appreciated.

Sarah Ruth Stayton and John J Baxter moved to The Cherokee Neutral Lands located in Southeastern Kansas around 1854.
They opened up a place for travelers on the Military Road, which ran from Ft Leavenworth through Ft Scott to Ft Gibson Ok.
John J was a minister he had owned land in Newton County, Mo. He was killed around 1859 and as far as we know Sarah moved to Texas. Baxter Springs, Kansas is named after Mr. Baxter. At the time they lived here the land belonged to the Cherokee Indians. My family name is Staton. My mother has done much research on the Baxter's and some on Sarah Stayton.
Finally located the genforum posting ..and I recall why I dropped the CORN search as a connection to my WASHBURN line. (think I must be overloaded on other lines and forgot about this research, lol)....

Posting as follows on Genealogy.com's Genforum message boards:

Posted by: Mary Matthews (ID *****4391) Date: July 06, 2006 at 15:18:28
In Reply to: Louisa Corn Helms (?Washburn) Stayton ? Hieronymus in Missouri by Audrey Williams Stanaland of 2003

I'm so sorry but it doesn't appear that Louisa Matilda Corn is who you're looking for. I just checked the 1870 Jackson Co MO Census, pg 140, on ancestry.com . Matilda Helms, age 27 is living next door,(hh#23) to John and Saleeta Corn(hh#22). She has two sons; William Helms, age 10 and George Helms, age 8. You probably didn't find her because you were looking for Louisa or Lulu and she was using her middle name.

1870 United States Federal Census Record
about Matilda Helms
Name: Matilda Helms
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1843
Age in 1870: 27
Birthplace: Missouri
Home in 1870: Township 48 Range 29, Jackson, Missouri
Family and neighbors: View Results
Race: White
Gender: Female
Value of real estate: View Image
Post Office: Lees Summit

In 1880, she's in Blue Twp listed as Matilda Stayton and widowed. She has 2 sons by Thomas Stayton---Edward, age 5 and Charles, age 4. Her older sons also are going by the name Stayton.

I hope you find her.
mary
===============
Hope all this information helps you with your research. I'm glad to have re-looked at it, refreshed my memory.

Audrey in TN

At last, here is the tree posted by a CAMPBELL person, LYTLE / CORN tree on Ancestry. There are some postings over on Genforum also. My conversaion / communication with the poster of tree was in May and October with only response ....but somewhere I also read about Soleta BRIDGES and found more info that what appears below.

---------
ID: I573567902
Name: John Slaughter CORN
Given Name: John Slaughter
Surname: Corn
Sex: M
Birth: 12 Sep 1811 in Patrick County, Virginia
Death: 4 Feb 1892 in Jackson County, Missouri
Burial: Corn cemetary
Change Date: 5 Oct 2003

Father: Jr Corn SAMUEL b: 25 Feb 1790 in Henry or Patrick County, Virginia
Mother: Mary "Polly" SLAUGHTER b: 10 Feb 1795 in Virginia

ID: I573567882
Name: Jr Corn SAMUEL
Given Name: Jr Corn
Surname: Samuel
Sex: M
Birth: 25 Feb 1790 in Henry or Patrick County, Virginia
Death: 25 Mar 1854 in Jackson County, Missouri
Burial: Samuel Corn Cemetary Oak Grove, Missouri
Change Date: 5 Oct 2003
Note:
Samuel was about 20 years old, and Mary only about 14 at the time of
their marriage. They lived in Virginia for approximately the first 23
years of their marriage. 12 of their 13 children (6 boys and 6 girls)
were born here. In the 1830's, the Samuel Corn family set out from
Virginia on a journey to the midlands of the United States, as many other
families were also doing at that time. They left in the Spring of 1833,
and took with them at least 9 of their children, including the baby,
Nancy Jane, who was not more than 6 months of age. It is believed that 3
of their 12 children had passed away at young ages before this trip ever
took place. They also had with them some 30 "Corn" slaves. They set out
by oxwagon and cart to travel some 1100 miles to their new home. Other
families are believed to have joined the caravan along their trek. The
oldest child they brought along was John, who was about 22 at the time.
And, they also had second son Martin, who was about 20. These two sons
(who later became successful Missouri farmers and community leaders) were
heavily relied upon in bringing the family to a highly pleasing stop in
western Missouri quite late in 1833. It is unlikely that any of the Corn
children were married during this journey, but it is believed that some
of the families that they later married into (such as Gosney, Bridges and
Koger) may have accompanied them on their journey, since there was safety
in numbers during these sorts of trips. It is certain that Josiah and
Elizabeth (Koger) Slaughter and their 6 or more children arrived in
Missouri about the same time period as the Corns, so they may have
traveled together. Josiah Slaughter was the brother of Mary (Slaughter)
Corn. Josiah and Elizabeth settled just a short distance south east from
the Corns after arriving in Missouri. Josiah and Mary are buried on the
original homestead in Slaughter cemetary, which is now known as the
Wallace Montgomery Farm.
Many descendants of these two have told stories of how they arrived in
Missouri "the year the stars fell", which happened on the night of
November 13, 1833. Stories have been passed down about how the Corn
slaves woke in the night (they were sleeping on the ground outside the
traveling camp) and saw the stars falling and thought the world was
coming to an end. The leader of this group of slaves, the cook, who was
named Josephine but everyone called "Phenie", awoke the Corn family. The
Corns arose to the sights and sounds of slaves chanting "It's the end of
the world" and praying to their Heavenly Father. It was no doubt a truly
frightful sight to behold for this group who were travelling into the
unknown. The "falling of the stars" was a phenomena visible throughout
the United States that night. It is believed the family must have
arrived at their destination not long after this, as they would not have
planned their travels to continue on through the harsh winter time.
The first known record of a land transaction for Samuel Corn, Jr. was
recorded on Dec. 6, 1833. He purchased 40 acres located at S24 TWP50
RG40. Next, on September 16, 1834 he purchased from Jerimiah Burns and
wife for $250 the "west 1/2 of the s-w qt. of sec. 24, Twp. 50, Range 31"
in Jackson County, Missouri. Burns had aquired the tract from the U.S.
Government on November 7, 1828. There are indications that around this
same time Samuel aquired parts or all of Sec. 23 and/or 24, some of which
may have been secured from William McElroy about May 4, 1836.
I've apparently well "hidden" my collection of facts I found on the John Slaughter CORN and 2nd wife Soleta BRIDGES line. Mary Slaughter was the daughter of John Slaughter, Revolutionary Soldier of Halifax Co., Va. and wife Mary (Hendrick) Slaughter.
***John Slaughter was the son of Ezekiel Slaughter, Revolutionary soldier and his wife, Sarah (Butler) Slaughter. ****Ezekiel Slaughter was a resident of Halifax Co., Va. during the Revolution and died in Greene Co., Ga.
***Ezekiel Slaughter was a private in the Revolutionary
War in Capt.
I tracked Louisa CORNs line a bit on the census and also found online trees. Louisa was in the household of John SLAUGHTER CORN and Soleta BRIDGES. I'll give you below a little of what I know (same as the 3 marriages you show for Louisa CORN), and also attach some info if I can locate it all in my records. I communicated with some CORN researchers, but can't locate at the moment those email exchanges. I've probably put these emails onto a CD, as well as info on the John SLAUGHTER CORN line. Can't find them at the moment.

I saved the following in my FamilyTree notes ..and if I locate the other info, I'll contact you again. Meanwhile, you might try a search for trees for John Slaughter CORN.

Louisa M. CORN born 1843 Jackson Co, Missouri to John Slaughter CORN and 2nd wife Soleta BRIDGES.

Louisa marries a James T. HELMS b 1838 MO ---on 1860 census above her parents (found in Jackson Co., Van Buren, Div. 35,MO about age 20 ..pg. 91 and 92, to page 112 on Ancestry images) shown just before a J. WASHBOURNE from Indiana and wife Elizabeth.

Missouri Marriages, 1851-1900 Record
Name: JAMES T. HELMS
Spouse: LOUISA M.
Louisa Matilda Corn was only married three times to my knowledge. My information comes from her grandchildren.
I wish this was not another "dead end" for you.
I know nothing about Louisa Corn's family except that we have a copy of an old photo with the names of John and Matilda Corn on it. We assumed these were Louisa's parents.
I also have a very old hymnal with the inscription, "John T. Corn, great grandfather" If you have any information about Louisa Corn and her family I would appreciate hearing about it.You mentioned about a second wife. Thanks

Mary Nancy Stayton was the sister of my Grandfather, Thomas Clelon Stayton. Her father was Joseph Riley Stayton. He was born in 1804. He is buried in Old Liberty Cemetery in Marion County, Kentucky. Samuel Hancock was my Great grandfather on my grandmother's side. My grandmother was Martha Ann nee Hancock Stayton. So the situation is: My Great Grandfather (the father of my grandmother) married my great aunt who was the sister of my Grandfather on the Stayton side. Hope this helps you out. There were 21 children of Joseph R. Stayton. He was married to a Bright, a Raley, and a Farmer.

I posted my message earlier today in an incorrect place, as well as leaving out one Surname, so I will try and make amends to this situation.
Hi:
This is Bill Stayton again, the great great grandson of Joseph Riley Stayton and Elizabeth (Betsey) Shuttleworth. My e-mail address has changed, and I would like to keep up with as many Staytons as I possibly can. As you can see, my sister (Martha Elizabeth nee Stayton, Walls, Oldham and I have done a tremendous amount of research on our lines that I have put in the Surname column. I was fortunate indeed to find the burial spot of John Buford Stayton (my 1/2 great uncle) who served in the Union Army during the Civil War and was in the Kentucky 10th Infantry. This discovery has made my life long ancestral research worthwhile.
Sincerely yours,
William Alvin Stayton, Sr.
5501 Westhall Ave.
Louisville, KY. 40214

Well, the CORN rearchers tell me that my WASHBURN line has no connection to Louisa Matilda CORN. I've been looking at her line for at least 2 years. She is the absolutely perfect candidate, and so far the only one, for having a perhaps very, very short Civil War era marriage to my great great grandfather UNKNOWN WASHBURN ...in Greene Co, Springfield MO or somewhere in MO.

My UNKNOWN WASHBURN and a Lulu CORN / CORIN were parents to my great grandfather Robert E. WASHBURN born in the late fall of 1864 or 1865 ..in Springfield I think.

1870 census, there is Louisa WASHBURN and 5 year old son Robert in the Martha KING household with Martha's son Marshall GASSAWAY ..living in Springfield, Greene Co, MO. In 1885, Robert E. WASHBURN 1st married to Anna MOORMAN in Springfield, and they divorced their July 1888 according to Greene County records.

Next (by 1890 City Directory) he is in the music business in St. Louis MO ...where I know he made his home and was a musician, composer of marches, waltzes, melodies, and taught several instruments (played fiddle, mandolin, piano, organ, guitar) ..had a family band later on. He married about 1896 to my great grandmother Mary E. CAVANAUGH in St. Louis.

When Robert died Oct. 1910 in St. Louis (living on Natural Bridge Road) Mary had no knowledge of his father's information, but she put down that his mother was Lulu CORIN / COREN ..very hard to read that surname, but CORN is close in pronounciation. I've turned up nothing even close for anybody but your Louisa Matilda CORN.

My thought was that Louisa Matilda CORN HELMS might possibly have squeezed in another marriage that resulted in a child, and appears in 1870 as Louisa WASHBURN, but remarries again. Interstingly, Robert's wife Mary requested of the St. Louis Post Dispatch that his obit be published also in the Springfield newspapers. So she must have thought or known that friends or family were still in the area.

However, like I said, none of the CORN researchers consider this scenario a possibility, sigh. So I'm still looking for confirmation on the mother ..as well as trying to determine the name of the father. Big Brick Wall. No males on the line (my mother was the only child of a marriage by Robert and Mary's son ..also named Robert E.L. WASHBURN b 1897 St. Louis) so I'm not a candidate for the WASHBURN DNA project.

I've been in contact with Greene County Library and the courthouse and searches of their records have produced very little if anything. ONly one record turned up for a WASHBURN in Greene Co MO ..a Prince Albert WASHBURN in a probate record. Not even sure if he's caucasian, and nothing else found on him.

I've tried looking at the WASHBURN line in Buchanan Co, St. Joseph MO where I found Thomas WASHBURN in the music business, along with a Richard WASHBURN also. I wondered if these were cousins / uncles who might have been a sort of guardian or tutor of young Robert and given him his education in music. Searches of colleges, etc. have not produced any students named R.E. WASHBURN, and so on ...

So, I'm still searching. If you see any possibility for Louisa M. CORN as being a candidate for his mother, let me know. Thanks.

I found Louisa CORN in her parents household on the 1850 census Jackson Co., MO, Van Buren twp --John L. CORN and 2nd wife Soleta (BRIDGES) ... and in 1860 in same location, Louisa M. has married James T. HELMS and is several families above her parents on the same page of the census.

What I'm trying to find out is did Louisa M. CORN's husband James HELMS die, and she remarried the STAYTON shown on some postings ... and then STAYTON possibly die and she remarry a WASHBURN?

I find a Louisa WASHBURN on the 1870 census with son Robert 5 in Springfield, Greene Co., Campbell twp, in the Martha KING household. On her son Robert's 1910 Death Cert. in St. Louis, his 2nd wife showed her name as Lulu CORN ... so this is why I think I have the right CORN family in Jackson County----but possibly I don't.

Any help appreciated.
Audrey in TN
