William Saint Clair born c.1869

I have a copy of a marriage license for a William Saint Clair who married my great grandmother Minnie Kline on February 12, 1893, in Steelton, Dauphin County, PA.
This marriage apparently did not last very long, but I don't know details as to how it ended.. so far I have no information on divorce or death. I believe William may have "moved on" and that there was no divorce.
According to the marriage license, William was 24 at time of application, lived in Steelton and his father was Alex Sant Clair. William was a railroader.

I've found a possible family for William, being the Alex St Clair who was a drygood merchant in Indiana County, PA, in the 1880 census. The family included Alex 36, Sarah 31, William 11 and Charlie 9.

Does anyone have any information on this family, or possibly any follow up information on William?

Also a possibility is the 1920 census for a William Saint Clair in Stone, Major Co, Oklahoma. (wife Maggie, children Leroy, Clement and Ruby). This William states he was born in Missouri, but his father was born in PA. Does anyone have info on this family?

Thanks in advance for any information!

Linda

St Clair in Clark County, Indiana

This is purely a shot in the dark! I am looking for information on a St Clair who possibly fathered a daughter in 1871 with Margaret Biesel in or around St. Joe Hill in Clark County Indiana. Presumably no marriage took place. The daughter's name was Mary Katherine Biesel and before her death in 1912 she told her son that her father's last name was St Clair. If anyone has information I would be interested in hearing from you.
Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 3 September 1903 Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

KILLED HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW

Family Trouble Is The Cause Of A Murder

Lawton: S. B. Bush was shot and instantly killed at his home by Rube St. Clair, his brother-in-law. St. Clair immediately surrendered himself to City Marshal Heck Thomas, who turned him over to the sheriff and he was placed in jail.

The immediate cause of the killing was family trouble. Bush had come home drunk and threatened to kill his wife. At numerous times before he had threatened her and attempted to beat her, and she has successfully resisted him. This time, however, he overpowered her, and throwing her down attempted to choke her to death.

St. Clair was in the room at the time, and believing that Bush really intended to carry out his threat and seeing his sister in such peril, he pulled a 38 Smith & Wesson revolver and fired at Bush. Five shots were fired, two of which took effect, killing Bush instantly.

Bush was discharged from the city police force a few days ago for misconduct and has since been drinking heavily. Recently he took a dose of morphine with the purpose of killing himself, but doctors arrived in time to save his life.

Several times he has threatened to kill his wife, and Ed Page and then commit suicide. At the time of the killing Page was in court making complaint against Bush for attempting to kill him.

I 'rearranged' my basement a year ago and my 'geneology pile' (about a foot tall) has taken up residence in an unknown location. I know I didn't throw anything away but it isn't readily available.

My Samuel was b. ca. 1777 with two sons (of several children) being Robert and Israel. My line is Israel so I probably won't have detailed info on the other siblings when I do find my info.

I'll send further info when it reappears!!!

Do you have additional lineage before and after Samuel and
Robert? Info is hard to find and sometimes earlier and later generation info will help tie together missing info in the middle.

Where are you getting most of your info?

Our line started in Bedford Co, VA, went to OH and then to Iowa. I know of others who went south of Virginia and then west to Texas.

Always glad to hear from other St Clairs.

I've found some in Iowa that are related and others who are not.

Let me know if you have more definitive info. Birth, death, and marriage dates and spouse info are always helpful.

John, Samuel and Robert appear in many generations so it is difficult to keep them straight without substantiating info.

Sorry my other info is misplaced!!

Best regards,

Elmer L St Clair
Iris,
I haven't given up hope entirely. There are many questions about Samuel who supposedly married Eliza in Michigan (Detroit area). And how he arrived there from West Virginia in the 1840s (about). Any concentration of St Clairs in Michigan(who were Sinclair until about 1800 when a tax clerk changed the spelling permanently) are of interest to me. If I discover anything, I will let you know.

Regardless, thank you for contacting me.
Linda

Hi Bob,

First, my apologies. I miswrote when I said it was the 1860 census, it was the 1850 in St. Joseph Co IN. I saw the reply from Linda and it appears that this Robert is not my Robert. He couldn't not have been in 2 different states on the same census...at least I hope not! She attached a jpeg of the 1870 from WI and I was able to open and view. I included in my response to her on the board the location of my Robert in 1870 in Michigan and it can be viewed on line in case your interested. I'm just glad that someone could provide me with information about your Robert so that I wasn't heading off on a wild goose chase to start working on this family only to discover it wasn't him. Sorry for the false alarm. I will keep my eyes open though know that I know there is another Robert St.Clair that was born in MI as well as his sister Virginia.

Iris

Linda,

Thanks for the quick response. Darn it all. I just had my bubble burst with your reply. :-(. My Robert was living in Huron Co MI 1870 and here is the information if you wish to view it.
Huron Co MI Lake Twp 817 Page #1 Lines 10-12 He may be listed as "Saintclaire"...I was doing the message from memory. I can't see a connection other than Michigan between these 2 Roberts. My Robert was married in Rubicon Huron Co MI on 9 Jan 1868. He died in Presque Isle Co MI 9 Jan 1919 and his death record listed his parents as unknown. I have no parent or sibling information to work with at all. The only clue I have is that his marriage record indicated he was born in Lexington Sanilac Co MI which is the county just below Huron. I searched every 1850 MI census entry for various spellings of St. Clair and no one had a son named Robert. I found yours on the 1850 St. Joseph Co IN census and was hopeful that maybe I'd found a lead. But it appears that yours settled in WI.
Thank for responding though, and if I have anything that might be of help, just let me know.
Iris

Hi,

I'm wondering if you might have any information on the Robert you mentioned? My reason for asking is that my ancestor is Robert St. Clair and the last I picked him up was in 1870 in Huron Co MI on the census. Born about 1847. I ran across the census entry for 1860 in Illinois for them and I saw that their Robert was 3 and born in Michigan...which fits with my Robert. I've been unable to track him any further back in Michigan and I'm hoping that this is one and the same person. I've been at a dead end for many years. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Iris Peppers

Greetings
Good to hear from you. Samuel appears in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 (St Clear) census in San Francisco with his wife, Amanda. He has at least one additional child, Mary. In the 1870 census, Samuel indicates that he is from West Virginia. In other census he indicates Virginia. The following needs to be investigated, but there is a Robert St Clair and a Lucinda Patterson (?) living in Virginia who have a single male child about the right age. Check Family Search for this information. I'm doing this from memory because my files are packed up for the moment, but I seem to remember that the 1830 census is where I discovered this information. Eliza has been a brick wall. I, too, have been unable to verify what happened to her in Freeport. Obviously, Lucinda is a player as a remarried woman, but Eliza could have remarried. Joseph died in an accident in Freeport and is buried there, so I assume that several members of the family moved to Freeport. I have checked with the History Room of the Freeport Public Library about Eliza's dod and burial, but there is no information that they have. And I was unable to find an obit for Samuel although I have the dod to be 19 Aug 1883 from the San Francisco Call. Unfortunately all the cemeteries of the age have been moved. Do you have an idea of religious affiliation of either Eliza or Samuel? I will continue to search once I return home. I am helping my husband sell his home in NM right now and am travelling for a while to come, but I will be in touch. Thanks for the response. Linda

I also got his 1798 Inventory (appraisement), the 1806 Division of slaves (though nine heirs, only 8 'lots' with James and Elizabeth not listed, leaving 7 heirs as receiving a 'lot', one of which got two 'lots') and the 1809 sale of his personal property and more slaves, that was to occur after his wife died (if so, wife died by or during 1809.)
The Personal Property tax record showed her as Lydia rather than Lydda.
By way of a direct email to you I am sending you an outline chart for 3 generations of descendants of William, but I have not proven all of the names. Most I got from his descendant family members so feel they are probably near to correct.
I still would like to find out if anyone has tied Middletons to this family. We can email privately if we have things to discuss. And Thank You so much for replying.

Thank you for your input. Your StClair and Middleton would be too late for mine, but further back they might connect. All of mine were in VA in the late 1700s, very early 1800s.
We also have most of our Simms line back to 1705, and also in VA.
Iris, My Robert St Clair was living in Clarno, Green County, WI in 1870 with his wife Effie and children. I've attached an image of the census information. I hope you are able to view it. BTW I was not able to find a Robert St Clair in Huron Co., MI, in 1870. Did I get this right from your message?
Let me know if this is your Robert St Clair. He is the son of Samuel St Clair and Eliza Rulow, supposedly married in Michigan, but by 1860 Samuel was remarried and in California. Eliza remarried Henry Darling in the mid 1870s. Robert L. was born in Michigan, married to Effie in Wisconsin. Hope this helps.

I am a descendent of Joseph St Clair, son of Samuel St Clair and Eliza Rulow (Rouleau?) of Detroit MI. Joseph was the brother of Lucinda, Virginia, Mary, and Robert. I am looking for information about Samuel and Eliza, particularly their parents. I think Samuel and Eliza "divorced" and Samuel moved to San Francisco, married again (Amanda) and died there on August 19, 1883. Eliza, according to BCR, died in Freeport IL but I have been unable to find her after she moved to Freeport from WI. I have information about Joseph's family. I would appreciate any assistance. Thanks in advance.
I am searching for information relating to my great, great grandmother and grandfather. His name was Samuel St. Clair and her maiden name was Eliza Rulow. Eliza was born in Michigan in 1813. Daughter Lucinda was born in Illinois in 1843. Daughter Mary E. was born in Michigan (maybe Detroit) in 1850. Son Joseph was born in Michigan in 1852. We have no real trace of Samuel (the father) beyond a report relating to Mary's birth. There also was a Virginia who may have been born in 1844 in Michigan. Does anyone have a Samuel St. Clair in their family tree? (Lucinda married Thomas Branshaw prior to 1860. Their first child was Geneva, born in 1859.)
Samuel St. Clair

Linda St. Clair"
It seems that you and I have hit a blank wall at about the same place ... Samuel and Eliza. I learned about Samuel through Terry Smith (tsmith@lds.net) Eliza I found in the 1860 census of Monroe, Green County, Wisconsin. Lucinda, Eliza's daughter, married Thomas Branshaw and had Albert
Eugene (1866), Geneva (1858), Joseph R. (1863), Celia (1865), and Henry Banshaw (1866). All of the children were born in Monroe, WI. Albert Eugene Branshaw married Mary Ida McGarry in Galesburg, Illinois. They had my father, Joseph R., Toma, and Gertrude. I would like to know as much as I can about Samuel and Eliza. Terry Smith says they were both from Canada .... but the Census says Eliza was born in Michigan. No trace of Samuel in 1860, so, he must have been gone by then. Evidently divorice ran in the family as both Thomas Branshaw and Albert Branshaw were divoriced by their wives ... supposedly for drunkeness and/or deserion.
I have received information that Lucinda ( known as "Lee") moved to Freeport, IL and married someone there. I have also been unable to find a trace of her there. I have a cousin also researching the family ... he can't find them either. I would appreciate any information about Joseph's family. If I find anything about Eliza or Samuel, I'll let you know.
In the meantime, what does BCR mean? (DOB: 13 July 1850 in Michigan), and Joseph (DOB: abt 1852 in Michigan). Reports give Samuel's place of birth to have been in Canada. In the 1860 Census, Eliza stated that her place of birth was in Michigan. Mary E. married Robert Wesley Trickel on 26 September 1866 in Green (County), Wisconsin. They had two children, Emma E. and Charles W. Mary died on 19 October 1905 in Browntown, Green County, Wisconsin. She in buried in the Kelly-Franklin Cemetary, Monroe, Green County, Wisconsin.

I would like to have anyone having information on Samuel or any of his children contact me. Thanks for your help.
In your message you asked for more information about our Samuel St. Clair. His wife was Eliza Rouleau (Rulow?) DOB 1813. Their children were Mary E. (DOB 13 July 1850) in Detroit, MI,; Joseph St. Clair, DOB 1852, in Michigan; Virginia St. Clair. DOB 1844, in Michigan; Lucinda St. Clair (my g grandmother) DOB 1843 in Illinois.. There also may be a Robert L. St. Clair. In 1860 most of the family was living in Monroe, Wisconsin. Samuel was not living with them at that time. Does any of this fit your St. Clair information?
My Samuel St. Clair is estimated to have been born in 1804. Reportedly, he was born in Bedford, VA (or West Virginia) depending on the source of the information. I note that your Samuel was born in 1777 and one of his children was named Robert. Our Samuel's father may have been named Robert. Do you have a birthdate for your Robert?
I look forward to you response.
