Natchitoches Parish, LA - Jeff / WS Steadman

I found a ggg-aunt, Sarah Luella STEVENS 1864-1932 that married a Jeff/W S STEADMAN in Mississippi. Found in Natchitoches Parish, LA early 1900s. Both buried in Old Bethel Baptist Cemetery with most of their children and in laws.
The Steadman family were farmers and living in neighboring Sabine Parish 1900 then relocated to Natchitoches 1910-30.

I would like to exchange information with descendants, or researchers, of this family in hopes of tying many loose ends in my Stevens family history.

I have much Stevens information on the Stevens line up to 1900 to share. Thanks ahead for any info,

I keep the Steadman family register and cannot find your family in the various records that I keep. Can you please share with me details of your grandfather; IE, about when and where was he born and when he died. I do have some records of an Arthur J. Steadman in Minnesota and another near Toledo, Ohio, but neither of their families seem to have a connection to Chillicothe.

I am also a descendant of that Ohio Steadman family, from Alexander Stedman the judge in Athens Co, who was born 1748 in Windsor Connecticut thro his daughter Tryphena who married the Rev. Sam'l Branch of Meigs Co. are you participating in the Steadman/Stedman DNA test? Which one of his children would be your ancestor through Arthur Jones Stedman?

Alexander's third wife was Sally JONES but I did not know they had children.

Since I found your msg on Ancestry.com "Community" dated in 2000 need to know if you are still interested in information about Elizabeth Steadman of N.S. I can add some information. Just as a "sidebar" there is a road in N.C. named Steadman after her father. I visited there and have a picture of the road sign. Also, met a distant Steadman relative living there.

Chester Laverne Steadman

Born in Nodaway, Iowa approx. 1903 I was told that his parents died when he was a child. Went to live with some relatives. I did come across the Iowa Census that when he was 12 and he was still living with his parents and 3 brothers in the Iowa State Census. Any help would be AWESOME!

Thank you for helping me make a connection. William Steadman, son of John Steadman and Hannah Harris of Cornwallis, NS, married about 1842, as a second wife, Sarah Ann Perrigo, b. 1825.

Based on census and other data, I have that they had a daughter Sarah L. Steadman who was born about 1850. She would definitely seem to be the Sarah Lavinia Steadman who married George Moore.

I do not think so.

Mary was born about 1825, as evidenced by several census readings; In particular the 1880 census where she was listed as 51 years old.

William was born in 1815.

The source that I had suggested that she was a daughter of a John Beach of Brookfield, Colchester Co., Nova Scotia, Canada.

I think I have found your family.

I found an entry in the SSDI for Edward G. Steadman, born 29 Jan 1910, died 7 June 1998. His last residence is listed as North Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas.

The 1930 census for Jefferson Township, Little River County, Arkansas shows

Steadman, Jas. A., age 58, married at age 33, born SC
" Florence, wife, age 49, married age 24, born Arkansas
" Sam E., son, age 22, born Mississippi
" Edward, son, age 20, born SC
" Gladys, daughter, age 17, born SC
" Ella Mae, daughter, age 14, born Ark
" Bonnie Lee, daughter, age 10, born Ark
" Dorthy, daughter, age 8, born Ark

The 1920 census for Jefferson Township, Little River County, Arkansas shows

Steadman, Alex, head, age 47, born SC
" Florence, wife, age 38, born Arkansas
" Sam, son, age 12, born Mississippi
" Edward, son, age 10, born South Carolina
" Gladis, daughter, age 7, born South Carolina
" Ellen M., daughter, age 4, born Arkansas
" Bonnie Lee, daughter, age 1 3/12, born Arkansas

So it looks like the family moved to Arkansas between 1912/3 and 1916/7, based on the birthplaces of Gladys and Ella Mae.

Note that we have not seen Frank in either one of these census records.

There is a family in the 1910 census, Fairfield County, SC, that I think might be this same family, but the entries are a little puzzling if so.

" Florence, daughter-in-law(?), age 23, married 3 years, born SC

This looks like Alex and Florence are a couple, married 3 years, and John and Bertha are a couple, married 3 months.

The puzzles:

- Florence is age 23, not age 28 as we would expect.

- Florence's birthplace is SC, not Arkansas as we would expect.

- There is extra writing in the relationship column for Florence, but I can't make out what it says. Would love to have someone else take a look to see what this says.

- Where is Sam? He should be about 2 years old in this census. I wasn't sure whether to expect Edward or not, given his birthdate of January 1910 according to SSDI

More research is needed. I have not been able to trace the family back to 1900 or 1880. I was hoping to find James Alex Steadman with his parents in 1880 but have come up empty so far.

Anyway, this should be a start.

btw, the 1920 and 1930 census indicates that James Alex owned his property in Little River County, so you might check there for deed records.

Edward, Ella and Sam are all names that repeat in my Steadman line, which came out of Chester County to Arkansas.

Where in Arkansas were your Steadmans? If you can give us a little more to go on, maybe we can make a connection.

I tried the email directly and it didn't go through for some reason.
If you know anything else about them, I may be able to look them up in the book and find them. There is no name index and you kind of have to know which chain to look under. Earl Steadman’s book is the product of much research by him and many others going way back to Scotland. There are not that many Steadman’s around so I figure we’re all kin somehow. The information I have is very detailed for part of the family, particularly my line and the 3 brothers who came to America, two settling in Charleston. One settled in Pennsylvania and others moved on to North Carolina. I understand that there are other Steadman’s that may have come to New England area perhaps straight from England rather than from Scotland and Ireland. I see references to Steadman’s spreading out to Texas and various states, so Arkansas is not to far away. I do not see any references to person from Arkansas in scanning over the book. If they came there from somewhere else they could still be related.

For the last couple of years we have had the Steadman reunion in Steadman, SC. Before that it was held in a little church community, not sure if it had a precise name. Was located in Saluda/Lexington county. Most of our Steadman's were raised in Ridge Spring, SC.

I do not find any direct reference to Arkansas, but if you are talking about Chester County SC, there is a line of the family from Edward Steedman living in Chester County SC who died approx 1835. Several of his descendants had the name Edward and Samuel and lived in the Chester County area and DOD for them was: Samuel B. 1891, Edward 1884, Samuel 1860 and Edward ca1835-DOD unknown. No Emmas or Franks, but there were a couple of John F.'s.

Alexander was my G.G. Grandfather married to Elizabeth Burnett.
1901 Census has James 1833 and catherine (Bogie) This james is the nephew of Alexander.
Alexander had a son William Russell Steedman b1847 North Berwick, William also had a son William b1871 Dunbar, my grandfather.

You would be surprised on how they can link themselves together. The other spelling, Stedman is also used in my husbands family..
I haven't seen a Moses as of yet, but I'm sure they are related in some way.

In fact some of the Steadman families do come from Gremany, Such as my own, i can only predate my family in England up until the early 1800's but what we do know is that my Steadman family DO NOT hale from the united kingdom.

I am looking for my Dads side of my family.
Our surname is steadman and i know the family at some point before the early 1800's moved to england. I have no names prior to my grandad as i cant get the information.
I am also looking for the name of Coyle.
My great grandfather was from yorkshire but was moved to london as a baby, he and his sister where then adopted, Thier birth names where Coyle, My G-gradads name was Edward Issac Coyle, He married Grace Marsden, I dont know the year.
They died with a few years of each other, Grace died around 1988 - 1989 and Eward (Ted) around 1990 - 1991.
As far as i can get with Steadman is that my grandfather who died around 1980 was Brian Peter Steadman, of london, He was married to Molly Coyle and had 3 children, Rober John, Peter Brain and Ann.
Ann had 2 children, Natasha and Lee, Peter Had a daughter in 1986 named Sheena, and Robert had me, Kirsty Louise Grace.
Im pretty sure that Louise was Brians mother her married name would have been Steadman but i dont know her madien name?
Can anyone help, Does anyone have these names in thier family tree of may have come across them else where.

Trying to find Martha June Steadman Furniss ?

I'm trying to find a "lost" cousin for my father. She is 57 or 58 right now. She was born Martha June Steadman and married a Furniss in Mississippi. She re-married some years back and we don't know what her husband's last name is. She wasn't able to communicate with anyone back home in Mississippi and everyone lost contact with her. Now nobody in my father's family has her contact info. My father seems to think she may be in Illinois. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have some new information to consider.
Sarah Lavine Steadman married George Moore.
Her father and mother are Sara Ann Steadman and William Steadman, William's father is also William and born Cornwallis NS Baptist and died Moncton 18 Nov 1854 burried at the Free Meeting House Cem, Moncton Parrish. Burrial plot also lists children of Sara Ann and William but no names.
Children of Sara Ann and William are Alvin 1843 and Sarah L 1852

Your husband is probably my cousin. Lewis Henry Steadman's brother was my father. I never knew my dad or his family. I knew about the sister, but didn't know til recently that there was a brother. My Grandfather passed away in 1997 and as for his brothers and sisters I am not sure. Ella I think passed away in 2005 or 2006 I cant remember. They all lived in Hot Spring county Arkansas. I know my Grandparents would go to the Steadman Family reunion in South Carolina each year but I am not sure what town.

Mary's parents--John Beach-Abt 1786,Rosetta, England--Bef.Oct,4 1873-Rosetta, Queens, NS--Janet Daly-dec.9-1790-Petite Riviere,Lunenburg,NS--Oct.4 1873-Port Medway, Queens, NS.These my great-great grandparents,imagine they're rolling over in their graves!!The Brookfield My Beach family was born in is Queens Co., Not Colchester, The area is abt. 2 miles away from me, Rosetta abt,1 mile .There is a brookfield in Colchester,and others throughout the province. I am looking for imfo on the James Steadman family who resided in the East Boston area?-was to have immigrated from Nova Scotia abt.1867 or after.James was married to Mary Beach of Queens, NS.Have some imfo but wish to fill in more on my tree,Mary my great-great aunt. Have most spouses but not much more than their name.Children to James & Mary-Frances,Ada,Georgina,Charles,Augusta,James(DOCTOR), William,George,Robert, Harvey, Cora.Would appreciate any imfo & willing to share .thanks in advance.
