No I don't think they're the same. I found out my aunt, her youngest daughter, was born in 1910 so I sent off for her birth certificate. Hopefully there is one and if so, maybe it will give her full name. Frustrating to not be able to find out. I asked my cousin, aunts and uncles ... none of them know! They always just called her Grandma or Mama. Oh well, that's why I'm putting together a book for them for Christmas!

After looking again at my records I have a Dollie M. Stearns, b. 12/4/1872 in Waterloo, IA. Parents were Esleek Stearns and Mary Elizabeth Munger Stearns, they were from NY. Does this connect with your Dollie?
Betty

I have two different names for her. She died when my Grandfather was only 12. He said her name was Dollie Viola Mounger. His brother said her name was Dollie Leoro Munger. I suspect Dollie is a nickname. I can't find a thing on her. As I drive around and see these old cemeteries, I just know she's buried in one someplace. Thanks for getting back to me!

Allice Stearns Abbott Lane from Bedford MA

Does anyone have any recent information about the descendants of Allice Stearns Abbott Lane of Bedford, MA? (Recent meaning after 1900.)

Allice was born Aug 13, 1764, daughter of Capt. Edward Stearns of
Bedford and Lucy Wyman Stearns. Allice grew up in Bedford and married
(1) Moses Abbott, Jr. of Bedford (c1761-1802) (ten children); and (2)
Stephen Lane of Bedford (?-1827) (one child). Allice died June 25,
1853 (some records say 1855), in the Charlestown home of her eleventh
child, Lydia Harriet Lane Hayward.

This information was gleaned from Bond's Genealogy and History of
Watertown, A.E. Brown's History of Bedford, van Wagenen's Stearns
Genealogy and Memoirs, and Willard E. Stearns' Memoranda of the
Stearns Family. These sources give more information of the
descendants to the time of their writing, generally 1860-1901.

I'd like to find more information on the descendancy of Allice Stearns
Abbot Lane into the 20th century. Specifically, how is she related to
Edgar J. Rollins of West Somerville MA, who bequeathed a sampler of
Allice's to the Concord Antiquarian Society Museum in 1942? Are there
any Rollins descendants still living? A portrait of Allice is
reproduced in A.E. Brown's book, where is the original?

I can offer information about Allice herself and her Bedford
connections. (I live in Bedford.)

A Stearns mystery – Polly and Ammi Stearns, Boston 1803

Ammi Stearns married Polly Stearns (her maiden name) on 31 Jan 1803 in Boston. Ammi (1772-1847) was the 10th child of Benjamin Stearns and Hannah Segur according to a number of reliable sources.

According to “The History of the Town of Lexington” and other sources, Polly Stearns (about 1777-1853) was the daughter of Asahel Stearns and Mary Smith. Here’s the problem – Asahel Stearns was also the son of Benjamin Stearns and Hannah Segur.

Either the history books are wrong, or Polly Stearns married her uncle. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Rich
Clsk22@gmail.com
Alfred Palmer Stearns

I'm looking for information on parents of Alfred Palmer Stearns, b. 9 Jan. 1830 in Grafton, N.H., d. 13 Dec. 1922 in St. Charles, Minn., m. to Eliza Monty of Chazy, NY, December 1854, and left in April 1855 with family members for Minnesota, arriving in October. Eliza gave birth to my great-grandfather Frank Henry Stearns in November 1855. Family information says Alfred's parents were Henry and Lois Smith Stearns, NH farmers, and that Henry's father was the immigrant to U.S. Haven't been able to confirm that and I don't know if Alfred had siblings. I have info on Alfred and Eliza to trade. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I have no direct knowledge of your folks in question, but like many family trees, the Stearns have some kinks and broken branches. Due to years and proximity we may indeed be related. My paternal grandfather John Stearns apparently went off to live another life when my father was 5 or so. This was in Sault Ste Marie, MI/Ont.

In trying to locate his current whereabouts I discovered my relationship to and enrolled in the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. A good part of my part of the Stearns family tree is posted here at ancestory.com.

Good luck and stay in touch!

Thank you so much for your response. I don't know if this will help but it's something to look at. All I have on Hannah is that she was the daughter of Mary Cunningham and Charles Stearns. She was born on 27 Jul 1816. She was my GG Grandmother, married to John Brann.

Charles Stearns was her father, born about 1793 and he married Mary Cunningham born 1 Aug 1787. I believe Mary's parents were John Cunningham and Mary Murray. When was your deed dated? Mary had a brother William Cunningham born 2 May 1795. I don't see a Jane but I wonder if Mary Cunningham Stearns might have been called Jane since she and her mother had the same name? Something else to look into.

I've never been able to get anywhere with the Stearns. Like the Horns, who lived in Pittston I think, they are a brick wall.

You can contact me by email at ofhmhe@aol.com. Thanks again.

Finding information from Ballstown is incredibly difficult. There was an Ezekiel Stearns born 1774 in Ballstown (later Jefferson). His grandfather Ebenezer Stearns supposedly died in Ballstown ~1792-1798. What I can't explain yet is there appears to have been a second Ebenezer Stearns in the Ballstown area. He was born ~1767. It is possible that he may be the father of Charles. According to the 1800 census Ebenezer Stearns had two sons who would have been born between 1790 and 1800.

I've been trying to figure out what was going on with the Stearns' in the area. I suspect that this second Ebenezer (who may be your ancestor) was related to my family.

So as I was writing this I was looking over copies of some deeds I had I have a copy of a deed where a Jane Stearns is deeding property to William Cunningham! (Jane married into the Stearns Family). Was Hanna’s father William? To have a Stearns’ selling property to a Cunningham presents an interesting lead.

Let me know if any of this is helpful. I can send more info later if this looks like an interesting lead. Anything you could share about the Stearns' in the area?
Re: info on John Stearns of Sault Ste. Marie Mi.

Robert,
I believe I am your 3rd cousin. Your great-Grandfather, John Addison Stearns, was born in 18 Oct 1880 in Greenville, Illinois and died in 1952. He is buried in Montrose Cemetery, Greenville, Illinois. He was the son of Charles Edward Stearns and Ellen Rice. Charles and Ellen had a family of 8 children. John was the youngest. He joined the Navy in 1902 and was discharged about 1926. I believe he married Agnes Lewis (or so that is the name in our family Bible) on 23 Apr 1907 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They had one son, John, born 25 Jan 1908. John, Agnes and son John were enumerated in the 1920 census in Sault Ste. Marie. John was probably not present as he was also on a Navy census (U.S.S. Tattnall, Constantinople, Turkey, Military and Naval Forces). They were divorced according to the 1930 census in Greenville, Ill. He may have gone to Canada at some time, but I am not aware if he did. I believe he returned to the family homestead in Greenville, Illinois after his discharge. That is about all I have on your family descendants, but have a lot of information on John Addison Stearns' family and ancestors.
Hope to hear from you.
Regards,
David

Chester V. Stearn in Kelso

I have a newspaper from 1956 that includes an article about an auto accident that killed Chester V. Stearn of Kelso, Washington. I have kept the newspaper for other reasons but I thought this article might be of help to someone else. If you would like a copy of it, I can scan it for you. It says Chester was 23 years old and a veteran of the Korean war where he had "received various citations including a purple heart". He is buried in the Willamette National Cemetery, Portland. His widow's name was Estella and his parents' are listed as "Mr. and Mrs. Valentine" but I think this is a typo since one of his brothers is also named as "Valentine" Other information is included.
