Benoni Stebbins

Benoni Stebbins, born 1689, enters into my Connecticut family tree. The most reliable sources say he was born in Northampton MA, where another Benoni was born in 1655. Seems logical one is son of the other. But no sources show this -- lists of Benoni's children do not include a Benoni. (Nor do I find any other mention of the younger Benoni's family of origin.)
But the elder Benoni had a younger brother Samuel, who deserted his family, fled to Rhode Island, and remarried (bigamously). By his first wife he had a son, Samuel Jr, born 1689, of whom I have found no further record. Is it possible that his abandoned first wife (granted a divorce in 1695) renamed son Samuel Jr with the name of admired uncle Benoni? (I have no evidence for this -- I'd like to find the true story, whether it's this or something else.)

Hi Judy:

I hope this will find its way to you since your post was way back in 2003. Anyway, I live in Knox County, Maine and volunteer for the Rockland, Maine Historical Society. I am working on a project with the old newspapers and just came across an interesting obit of a man who was identified as William C. Stebbins who had reference letters in his pocket from an E.C. Stebbins, druggist, in Boston, MA. This obit is from a 1/20/1873 newspaper. If you are interested, let me know. You can e-mail me directly at megsateennow@aol.com if you want to.

Cindy Beane

Horace Stebbins in Van Buren Co MI

Horace Stebbins born in Deerfield MA in 1804, moved as boy to Potter, Yates Co NY and as an adult moved to Van Buren Co, MI. The Stebbins Genealogy says he married Susannah Vedder but have been able to find no trace of her. According to info I have, Horace married Jane Mulholland (2 children) and second Lydia Skinner (2 children.) Anyone with any knowledge of whether or not Susannah Vedder existed and knowledge of any descendants of Horace I would like to correspond. I believe Horace had only one child who had children---daughter Maria married Barnabas Odell. Only son was Lewis who died in Civil War service. I am descended from Horace's brother George and am attempting to trace all 13 siblings in that family. Parents were John and Sarah (Sanderson) Stebbins.

I think I may be related to you. My grandmother was Marie Louise Stebbins, sister to a Charles Stebbins born in Canada in the mid 1800s. When my grandmother was in her early to mid 20s she was living around Pawtucket Rhode Island. She was sent out west to care for her brother, Charles Stebbins and his children who I believe lived in Idaho at that time. She married Thomas Pierce Moore, owner of the general merchantile store there. Would you know anything about that? Thanks.

Photograph of "Grandpa Stebbins"

I have a 6 x 8 photograph of an elderly man and a young boy sitting on his lap. On the back of the photograph is written "Buster (about 5) and Grandpa Stebbins. The boy is William Gustavus Andrews, born February 27, 1902 and died in 1985. The picture is of the man sitting in a rocking chair, in front of a fireplace holding the boy. The picture looks like it was taken at night, as it has a dark background. Judging from the age of the boy, I assume the man was born between 1830 and 1840. The picture could have been taken by the Allen sisters of Deerfield. (A fantastic picture, as you see the fireplace, and the side of the man and boy).

Looking for family of Henry H. Stebbins b. 10-25-1832.

Hi, I'm looking for the family of Henry H. Stebbins. The only Henry H I can find in the Stebbins Ancestorial Society was married to (someone)Gutherie & then married in 1849 to Lucy Marie Adams in New York. Through this marriage he had 2 children Charles Henry b.1850 & Amelia b.1852. I've found that Charles Henry, the son, was married but no other information. I believe that Henry H. Stebbins then moved to Dexter Michigan & married Edna Wilsey in 1860 & started "The Stebbins House" which was a hotel & restaurant. He & Edna had 2 children, 1 of which died, the other Charles William Stebbins b. 8-1861. Henry died in july of 1884 leaving the hotel to his wife & son Charles William. I am trying to locate someone who can fill in the blanks for me about this man. Is he the man who was married to Guthrie & then Lucy Marie Adams and then married Edna Wilsey? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi, I am so glad to hear from you. I know you are related directly to us & your father & my father-in-law were first cousins. I even might have pictures of your father with Dad. Did your dad give you any information about his family tree? If you would like to contact me, you can call our business on monday & I can tell you more about all of our families. My number is 1-800-852-8155. I don't get in until about 11:30 so you can call after that time. Hope to hear from you soon. Mary Jo Stebbins

Edgar Gregory Stebbins

First of all for you and anyone else that’s reading this, loads of information about the Stebbins family can be found at http://www.sover.net/~neills/Stebbins.html. It is the Stebbins Ancestral Society and I came accross the address here in this message board. The society has the information about your ancestors that you are looking for so be sure to visit their site. I will give you some information right here but the society can give you lots more. Edgar Gregory Stebbins’ parents were Abdiel Hesadiah Stebbins and Julia Ewell. He had 10 siblings—Loana Ella, Lurinda M, Henry Clay, Mary Jane, Louisa, Robert Hoyt, Emery James, Austin Ewell, Antoinette, and William Volney. The mystery in the census records may be due to the Abdiel Hesadiah Stebbins naming. His mother was Betsy Stebbins-daughter of Hezadiah Stebbins and Betsy Sessions Babcock. Janice Taylor also left two messages here and she mentioned that her line is through Hezakiah Stebbins—son of Abner Stebbins and Martha Smith. He is the same person as Hezadiah Stebbins; he just has two spellings for his name. So the two of you are actually from the same line. Getting back to Betsy Stebbins, she was deserted by her husband while she was pregnant with Abdiel Hesadiah. Her husbands name is unknown because when her son was born, she went to court and asked that Abdiel carry her last name of Stebbins. Permission was granted and her husbands name was completely forgotten. She later remarried and had 10 children with her second husband, Benjamin Barrus. If she had kept Abdiel’s last name the same as his father’s, you would have a different last name!

Finding Illinois ancestors

Your quetion is too vague. If you want information on your ancestors you need to provide more information. (grandparents, great-grandparents etc.) I did research and there are several branches of the Stebbins family (including one of my own) that have been in Illinois over the years. I researched the people who responded and even they are not close ties (although they do eventually have a common ancestor). The main thing I would suggest is visiting the site of the Stebbins Ancestral Society at http://www.sover.net/~neills/Stebbins.html. They have a lot of information, including a gedcom file you can download with 57,000+ names and you can see if you find any helpful information in there.

Stebbins, died March 1, 1863 age 70 yrs
Stebbins, Mercy, wife of Capt. Judah Stebbins, died March 19, 1792 age 26 yrs
Stebbins, Thomas W., son of William Stebbins, died Dec. 11, 1830 age 4 yrs
Stebbins, William died Aug. 20, 1847 age 78 yrs
..........................................................

Published by J. B. & H. B. Sykes, 1896, Clinton, NY

This little pamphlet is issued with a view of preserving in printed form a record of burials in the Old Clinton Burying Ground, so far as it could be copied from memorial stones therein. It is probable that the nameless graves within the enclosure far outnumber those marked by stones, of which there are over five hundred. It is to be regretted that the names, at least, of those buried in unmarked graves could not have been entered in the printed list, buy only a few of them could be ascertained, and such have been recorded.

Within the Town of Kirkland there are five cemeteries, viz.: Deansboro Cemetery, Clinton Cemetery, St. Mary's Cemetery, Hamilton College Cemetery and Kirkland cemetery. There are also seven neighborhood burial places, viz.: the Old Clinton Burying Ground, one near Kirkland, one in the Ellinwood district, one in the Chuckery district, one in the Barker neighborhood, one near Prospect Hill, and the old Indian burial place in the south-west corner of the town. There are also in the town limits several family burial plots, containing a few graves, and also here and there a few Indian graves. Some of the old neighborhood grounds have been opened for burial purposes more than a hundred years, and within their sacred precincts rest the remains of some of the most noted of our early residents. Many remains have been removed from the Old Clinton Burying Ground to the Clinton Cemetery, since the opening of the latter in 1856.

In the Spring of 1787, five or six Connecticut families decided to seek new homes somewhere in the wilderness of Central New York, This little band of pioneers reached this vicinity on the 4th of March, and commenced a settlement on the site of the present village, which was named by them later in honor of George Clinton, first governor of the state. The little colony being composed largely of good Puritan stock, soon felt the need of church privileges, and in 1792 organized themselves into a church and society, adopting the Congregational form of government, under the title of The Society of Clinton. in 1864, the form of church government was changed to Presbyterian, but the legal title has remained the same.

The next common necessity required by the early settlers was a burial place. At a meeting of the Society of Clinton held in 1796 it was voted "to accept of one acre of land as a gift from Bartholomew Pond, its owner, for the said burial place, the society to fence it and provide two gates, said Pond to have the feed and give the society a conveyance." The acre referred to is the southern half of the Old Burying Ground.

The first death among the settlers was caused by the drowning of Miss Merab Tuttle, who was attempting to cross the Oriskany Creek on a bridge made by two trees, felled side by side. The water was high, and the unfortunate girl, becoming dizzy, fell in. It was near nightfall, one day in the Spring of 1788. It was impossible to recover her body until the next day, when it was found nearly a miles below, lodged on the bank. There being at that time no burial place provided, her grave was dug on the Green, now the village park. Her father, Col. Timothy Tuttle, deemed the spot too wet, and removed the remains to his farm, on that portion now occupied by the Old Burying Ground.

The second death was caused by the falling of a tree, which crushed out the life of a young man named Thomas Fancher in 1791. The second grave in the old ground was opened for him. No stone locates either grave. The third death was that of Marcy, wife of Judah Stebbins, who died in 1792, aged 26. the stone which marks her grave was probably the first erected in the enclosure, and is still well preserved after 104 yrs.

In the address of the late Judge O. S. Williams, delivered at the dedicatory exercise of the Clinton Cemetery in 1856, referring to the Old Ground, the Judge said: "The burying ground, at an early day, was laid out into regular lots with passages between; a map was made, the lots were set apart to the different families then residing in the society, and a joint deed was executed to them by Bartholomew Pond, who had succeeded to the ownership of the farm. Some years having gone by, and it is supposed in 1805, it was enlarged by the addition of the northern and western parts as it is now bounded, which were deeded to the Society by Samuel Royce; and this addition as divided and distributed in the same manner. These lots and their proper boundaries, were for many years preserved; even now, some of them are known and maintained, but for the most part they have long since been abandoned, and interments have been made without much order and with but little regard to the rights of the original proprietors."

"Before closing, I cannot forbear adverting to one inquiry which has often been made and which deserves an answer" What shall be done with the Old Burying Ground? Some there are, residing here, whose attachments to that cannot be severed or transferred. There lie their friends and kindred; they feel forbidden to disturb their remains, and soon they expect to take their places at their side. Shall these, our friends, be compelled to abandon that spot? There are the graves of others which kindred dwell in distant parts; they have none here to raise a voice in their favor, and yet they send forth a silent but most eloquent appeal for protection. Shall this appeal be in vain? Heaven forbid ! It is a holy spot - a landmark in our journey - the resting place of the fathers of our land. let no profane hand trespass upon it boundaries or disturb its slumbering ashes. Rather, I would say, let this sacred enclosure be guarded with more diligent care. Let every incumbarnce be removed from the premises. In some proper manner let their custody be transferred to the trustees of the Clinton Cemetery Association, and let them be charged faithfully to provide for its safe keeping and its protection from the hand of carelessness, or wantonness or gain. Still may it remain, the resort of the pilgrim and a place of burial to those who wish to be laid within its borders. 'Perhaps the time may come when these graves shall have worn away; when those who now weep over them shall have found kindred resting places for themselves; when nothing shall remain to distinguish this spot from the common earth around'; and its history shall have disappeared alike from the memory of affection and the twilight of tradition; then, but not until the, there may be an hour when it should be abandoned to the ploughshare of the farmer, and the workshop of the artisan."

Prof. Edward North, of Hamilton College, in his address on the occasion referred to, said: "There is an immense fund of crude material for biography spread out over the uncounted and too often uncared-for grave-stones of the generations gone before us. The merriment sometimes indulged in over the inscriptions in the early burial places of New England is neither a mark of reverence or of wisdom. We may smile, if we will, at bad Latinity and worse Anglicisms, at wretched puns, and halt verses, false rhymes and mis-spellings, but beyond such verbal faults, there is a fullness of detail in those old, quaint epitaphs, that gives them a high historical value, to be enhanced with each succeeding year. No thoughtful person can visit one of these ancient burial places without getting profit to his heart and whole-some instruction. he will find himself unawares interested in names, families and household incidents previously unheard of. Solemn appeals scarcely legible, on weathered and mutilated sandstone, or indigenous marble, will stir emotions within him never felt before....The original burial place of Clinton is hallowed by so many tender associations, and is so suggestive to the student of our own local annals, that its claim to be carefully protected, will not be ignored.

RECENT IMPROVEMENTS

During the summer of 1896, an effort was made to raise sufficient money, by subscriptions, to improve the Old Burying Ground, in which Nature had for years reigned supreme. Underbrush and trees grown at random were cleared away, the grass and weeds were cut and removed, the useless and cumbersome footstones were taken up and the memorial stones righted, many which and fallen out of their bases being reset and cemented, the general surface of the ground was graded and the barren spots seeded, the old and dilapidated fence was taken down, rebuilt and painted. These improvements cost about $130.00, besides much time spent in soliciting and collecting subscriptions and attending to other details, without remuneration. The inscriptions on some of the headstones had become nearly effaced by time and the elements, which suggested that a record should be copied from all the stones where possible, and put in printed form for preservation, and which suggestion has been carried out in this pamphlet.

Surviving relatives of those buried in he Old Burying Ground would do well to create a fund by paying one dollar annually to the Treasurer of the Clinton Cemetery Association for the special purpose of keeping the enclosure in a respectable condition and properly protected. Will they do this ? Or will they permit the graves of their kindred to become overgrown with the briers of forgetfulness ?

The Village Board of Health has recently forbidden any further burials in the grounds, without a special permit from the President of the Clinton Cemetery Association.

Dr. J. I. Scollard,
J. B. Sykes,
Committee of Improvements

Old Clinton Burying Ground

The following transcription was taken from Historcal Sketch of the Old Clinton Burying Ground with a Record of Inscriptions, publ. by J. B. & H. B. Sykes, 1896. The incsriptions were taken from over five hundred monuments, showing a portion of the burials made in the sacred enclosure during the century of its existence.

Abbott, Esther, wife of Nehemiah Abbott, died Jan. 2, 1857 age 81 yrs
Abbott, Esther, wife of William Abbott, died Dec. 23, 1839 age 86 yrs
Abbott, Nehemiah died Jan. 11, 1869 age 86 yrs
Abbott, William died July 25, 1832 age 87 yrs
Abbott, William, Samuel, Polly, children of William Abbott, graves unmarked
Abbott, William, son of William Abbott, died Oct. 21, 1819 age 28 yrs

Allen, Jerusha, wife of Daniel Allen, died June 3, 1819 age 47 yrs

Anderson, David died Aug. 24, 1849 age 80 yrs
Anderson, Elfreda, wife of David Anderson, died Aug. 2, 1848 age 76 yrs
Anderson, Levi M., son of Charles Anderson, died Sep. 6, 1850 age 5 yrs
Anderson, Mary Jane, wife of Charles Anderson, died Sep. 26, 1846 age 21 yrs
Anderson, Susan died Sep. 4, 1808 age 16 yrs
Anderson, William died Jan. 10, 1847 age 54 yrs

Andrew, Jared died May 1, 1829 age 61 yrs
Andrews, Alonzo, son of George Andrews, died April 11, 1854 age 3 yrs
Andrews, Anna Marshall, wife of George Andrews, died March 7, 1895 age 62 yrs
Andrews, Catherine M, dau of George Andrews, died Aug. 4, 1873 age 20 yrs
Andrews, Hannah I., dau of George Andrews, died Sep. 7, 1864 age 3 yrs
Andrews, Maria Sayer, wife of George Andrews, died March 28, 1854 age 28 yrs

Armstrong, Caroline E., dau of E. Page 68

"Salmon Stebbins -- [Pastor of this church] September 1839-1840, was born in New Hampshire in 1795, entered the ministry in 1817; was sent to Wisconsin as a missionary from the Troy Conference, in 1835; was Presiding Elder of Milwaukee district from Sept. 1837, to Sept. 1839; faithfully traveled Illinois and Rock River conference circuits, for many years, riding an Indian pony. Elder Stebbins was a typical -- an idea, representative of the church of Christ; self denying, courageous; sympathetic, true to his convictions; earnest, able and energetic, the effective champion of every right cause. The last seven years of his life were spent in Bristol, Kenosha Co. (Wisc.). He died in Kenosha, Wis., July 27, 1882."

Re: Photograph of John Stebbins marker

The marker that you mention, is from Historic Deerfield, Massachusetts. It still stands today in front of his former home lot. John Stebbins was a veteran of the battle of the 1675 Bloody Brook (Muddy Brook) ambush in South Deerfield, Massachusetts. In Feb. 1704 the French & Indians raided the Town of Deerfield killing many of the inhabitants & taking hundreds captive to Quebec. There is a lot of information on this family & on the events, which is availiable through the Historic Deerfield Museum & Library.
