Just looking around to find out about my family name. I live in Farnborough, Kent. Watched Middle Earth over the past two nights and hoped I was not an "ORC". Rather be Saxon, Celt or Norse than something else! Love going to Lapland and Husky driving in -25C or lower, also love the Med at 35+, is this a trait? I hope this is not a SPAM catcher or money grabing scheme, we will see!

Hi,

Thanks for your posting. It corrected an error in my database. I had Nathan's 3rd wife as Sarah J. Langley. Further research based on your data found that in the Aurora, Indiana, census of 1850, she was listed as Sarah Langley, wife of Sidney Langley. They were listed on the same census page as was Nathan Stedman and his family!

She is apparently a widow with a 10 year old daughter Ella in 1860 Aurora census. An Ella M. Langley married a George W. Lamb on 20 May 1869 in Dearborn county. In 1870 and 1880 census, she is listed with Nathan in Aurora.

Nathan supposedly died in 1884 -- I have not found specific date or where he is buried. And in 1900 census of Washington, Daviess Co., IN, Sarrah Steadman is listed as Mother in Law to Charles Candler.

Do you have information on Sarah's parents? I can find no record of her marriage either to Sidney Langley or to Nathan Stedman so if you have details on either of those, I would be very interested.

thanks,

John Lisle
Nashua, NH
http://www.johnlisle.org/stedman/tng
John, Wow! Your site is amazing and I am thrilled with all of the Stedman information. I am headed to England in May and can't wait to search Kent & Stedham for my husband's roots. His GGfather came into the US in California circa 1907 from England. So definitely not a CT or Mass Stedman but one that I may pinpoint closer to an exact place in the UK. Would love to communicate with you....find me @ kjstedman@sbcglobal.net. Cheers!

Hi Katrina

The Munslow result is me Dave Stedman, and I'm still firmly routed in Old Blighty, we managed to make it out of England though slipping across the border into Wales about 200 years ago. Mike Stidmon the other result still isn't sure how he fits into the picture yet, all his data seems to suggest he is from Scotland, so he is going over things to see if he can make some sense out it.

By the way did you have a chat with your brother about joining the DNA project, or is he still not interested ?
POW/MIA Korean War STEDMAN

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Springdale, Montana as his home of record.

Soldier: GERALD FRANCIS STEDMAN
Born: 1930
Date of loss: Feb. 13, 1951 POW
RA19315843
A Btry 15th Field Art Btn, 2nd Inf Division

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Teri,

Thanks for the note. This is not a Stedman family that I had yet worked with so it gave me a chance to get a file on them started. If you would like a report of what I have found so far, please ask privately. I would also like to learn from you about details of descendants of this family.

By the way, here is a link to my web site that is an extensive registry of the Stedman family.

http://www.lislefamly.org/stedman/tng

Here is what I found from a quick census search. George was most likely her father. It is not clear to me if Elizabeth - likely maiden name Lemmon - was the mother. Mary's mother seems to have been born in Virginia.

George was most likely born in Connecticut about 1805-1808 -- this is becoming a black hole as we have several members on the Stedman research list with ancestors born in Connecticut at this time period and no trace of how they connect.

I found George with Mary in the 1850 census in Cincinnati living not far from Amos Williams and his father. By 1860 they are married with children and living in Covington, KY. Just before 1880 census, Amos and Mary moved to Saint Louis. Amos died before the 1900 census, but Mary is still living there in 1900.

There is no sign of George in the 1830 or 1840 census when he should have already been in either Ohio or Virginia as Mary had an older sister Elizabeth who would have been born before 1830. Mary was likely born in Virginia. The various census listing show a variety of birth places for all of these people. It would be useful to find out what happened to Elizabeth to see if tracing her family will yield any clues to Mary.

George was in charge of a prison in Cincinnati in 1860, but by 1870 I can find not further trace of him in the census.

John Lisle
Nashua, NH
stedman at tqsi.com

Hi Nancy, I come from the Stedman line, also. G grandfather came from Kent, England, settling in Vermilion County, IL. Many of them worked/died in the mines. Would you have any info for the Stedman's from that area? I know many migrated to other states, I'm not familiar with the Idaho line. I saw the posting and it mentioned Louis W. from IL, I thought I'd give it a shot in the dark. I also have family photos. My G uncle, Edgar Stedman, also had a son named Donald. Thanks, Dot

Hi John, May I ask who you are referring to when you say to contact you off list? My g grandfather Robert Francis Stedman came to NY, then to OH, then to IL at age 17 from Kent, Bermondsy, England. We think he arrived on ship Constantine. His father, John Stedman, was a ship captain...may have drowned at sea..unsure. We're having issues with Robert's mother's name also...my aunt said it was Elizabeth whom we have a photo of as a child, but we're finding an Ann that seems to fit the timeframe. I would love to find out our English Stedman genealogy. We also have notes that say the family came to England by way of Holland, Scotland or Ireland. Thanks. Dot

Hi Nancy, Thanks for the info. My family worked in mines in IL so probably not the same lineage. I responded to your post because of possible IL connections. I also find many unhappy events and many hardships as I research. I admire the fortitude it took to survive. How interesting to hear stories about "sourdough" pioneers. Genealogy is fun and I can appreciate the excitement when we come across new info. Have a great week and if I come across any connections, I'll surely pass them on! Thanks again, Dot

Hello,
the only information I know about the Stedman family is in connection with the Paragon Mine in Idaho. He was the manager of the mine and his family, including wife Ida and son Donald lived right at the mine. As noted before my Grandfather, Frank Renz wired the mine for electricity for the company. About the turn of the century and later Frank and my Grandmother visited the mine. If you find some connection with this line let me know and I will forward pictures of Louis and Donald to you at the mine site. I don't believe that Ida shows up in any of them. I am interested to hear about Ida and her family. She was born in Minnesota. She endured allot of tragedy in a short period of time.

Regards,
Nancy

Thank you for responding. I am not a member of the Stedman family, however I have some good pictures of the mine area and the people, including Mr. Stedman and Donald. My Grandfather, Frank J. Renz, worked at the Paragon Mine in about 1907. He wired the mine for electricity. My Grandmother was also there at some point. She struck up a friendship with Ida.

I will be happy to share the pictures with you.
Researching the Stedman Family of Idaho. Ida's (b. 1878, Minnesota) husband was Louis W Stedman, (b. 1862, Illinois), and was the manager of the Paragon Mine. They had a son Donald who I think died at about the age of 16. Have a picture of Donald at about the age of 3 at the Mine.
Regards,
Nancy

How exciting! I have been actually researching the Wille family of Minnesota for my bro in law and Ida was a daughter. What I did find on her was so interesting and am curious about her life. According to a newspaper clipping on her from 1922 she was a pioneer "sourdough" who wore guns and wielded a shovel and pickxe along side her husband. I don't know much about Mr. Stedman and have tried to search for him and info about the Paragon Mine. I would be delighted to see the pictures and thank you so much for sharing.
My email is cove203@comcast.net
I will be away from my computer for few weeks but look forward to seeing them when I return.
Re: Ancestors of ? Stedman born about 1610 prob. in England

I am not sure how accurate any of my info is, as it was compiled by a realative and has no documentation. She lists a Jehu Burr b.1600 England, son Nathaniel b. 1640 Conn. married to Ann. They have a son James,...etc. If any of this sounds right, I will be happy to share what I have. I am in the process of tracking down this realative to see where she got her information.

Re: Stedman/Williams

This matches up with everything that I have. In 1850 census there is a Mary A lemon living with George and Elizabeth and also a Charlie born around 1812.

Amos and Mary Jane Stedman Williams did move to St. Louis. That is where their daughter Bertha and my great grand father Oscar Ernst Biermann met and go married. They married May 28, 1902. They had an infant son Amos Henry in 1911 who only lived 5 hours. Then they had my grandfather Gail Anath Biermann(Jan 10,1915). They then adopted a boy and named him Stedman(after her grandfather) Britt(after his grandfather) Biermann, he was born June 15,1909.

Amos and Mary had many children: Amos Belleville(artist in California);Elmer;George Wilber;Flora B.; Mary Jane Virginia; and of course my great grandmother Bertha Addie.

I hope this helps you. You can email me at jesseteri@comwares.net if you have found any more information about the Stedmans and Lemmons.
