Luther William Steelman--b. 1892 in ARK

I am searching for information on my great uncle, Luther William Steelman, born October-1892, in Salem City (Bass Little Township) Sebastian CO, ARK, and died before 1910, in Oklahoma. He appears in the 1900 census with his family as follows:

Dyer Steelman, head, age 32
Ella D. Steelman, wife, age 31
Luther W. Steelman, son, age 7
Roy C. Steelman, son, age 2 months
John W. Reynolds, father in law, age 62

Family story is that Luther died before 1910, due to food poisoning, "ate some bad greens", and was buried somewhere near Grady, OK, or farther east, in OK. This family later moved to CA. I would love to know where Luther is buried, and any information about both him and John W. Reynolds, his maternal grandfather. J.W. Reynolds' burial site is unknown, as well.

Your family descends from Matthias Steelman. In 1770, Matthias Steelman moved his large family from Kent Co, DE to Surry Co, NC.

Steelmans in North Carolina??

I am looking for my father's family who lived in North Carolina, somewhere near Raleigh. I belive my father, Clarence Carl Steelman, was the oldest son of Joseph and Nora Steelman but I'm not sure. He had two sisters, Georgia and Beatrice, and a brother, William (Bill). I believe my father was born some time around 1912, September 22.

I did not know my father's family at all and feel like I'm missing a huge part of understanding who I am because of it. Please point me in a direction that would help if you can. Feel free to call me at 815-556-7626.

Carole, I've not logged on in a year or so. My husband's great-grandfather was Sanford Lee Steelman....and grandfather Charles Lee Sanford.

We have quite a bit of info (only from internet...that I didn't have to pay for) that goes back to Hans Mansson (b. about 1612..Sweden)....and him being sent to New Sweden. Punishment for ruining fruit tree's in the Crown's garden....go there....or the gallows.

If you have any information on either of the grandfather's (or Steelman families)you care to share....it would be appreciated.

I am the granddaughter of Joe Bailey Steelman who was born in Upshur, TX in 1910 and passed away in Los Angeles in 1977. My grandmother is Hannah Anderson.

My grandparents divorced around 1950 or so and we have very little infomation on the Steelman family.

Any help in finding resources would be appreciated.

In particular, I am interested in locating my grandfather's grave or any relatives

Steelman, Minnie, Wife, aged 37, b. Indiana, parents b. same

The 1910 Cincinnati census also does not list any children, but does indicate that Minnie had given birth to one child and one child was living. As Edgar & Minnie had only been married for one year, it is possible that she had a child prior to marrying Edgar.

I can not get past Joseph Steelman that married Barbara Vestal.

It is hard to find records on someone so far back when you are limited to how you can obtain the information.

Engineer Steelman injured in accident if fears he may die

Appears in "The Ravia Herald" 7 March 1908, Ravia, Johnston County, Oklahoma

Monday while engine No. 713 was pulling a work train at Francis the engine turned over. Engineer Steeman and Fireman Stallings were both badly injured; in fact, it is feared the engineer's injuries may prove fatal. They were carried to the hospital at Sherman on a special train, which made the run of 105 miles in 104 minutes.

According to "Hans Mannson and the Steelmans" by James F. Steelman, which was published in The Atlantic County (NJ) Historical Society Yearbook, vol. 14 #1 (2000), "Sarah Steelman; md. Daniel Sutherland, b. 1745 in Scotland." Steelman cites The Journal and Biography of Nicholas Collin 1746-1831, translated by Amandus Johnson, Phila 1936, p. 306 as the source for this statement.

James Steelman’s will is dated 3 April 1786 and was proved 22 January 1788. He speaks of a wife but not by name. To his son James, besides other land, he gives ten acres of meadow land on Repaupo Creek; to his son Isaac he gives the rest of the Repaupo land and about two acres lower down the creek then in the tenure of Andrew Steelman; to his sons John and Andrew he gives the homestead plantation; he mentions three daughters --- Sarah, Elizabeth, and Jemima; the executors named are Thomas Clark and his son-in-law Daniel Sutherland. Letters of guardianship were granted to Ebenezer Adams for Jemima, John, and Andrew Steelman 22 January 1788; similar letters were granted to the same person the same date for Elizabeth Steelman. The birth of this son Isaac is recorded in the register of Racoon Church.

Silas Steelman

I've been trying to link Silas Steelman with the other Steelmans in my family tree. He was born around 1800 in Yadkin Co, NC and supposedly died in Tennessee. I don't know his spouse either but he had about 8 kids. Many of his descendants lived in Arkansas.

Looking for info on William Steelman (or Steelmon) born around 1878. He married Lucy (Unknown) around 1897. They lived in Lawrence Co., TN in 1900. Two sons: Roy b. 1900 and George Odell Steelmon b. 1905. William died around 1906 and Lucy married Melton Neil next. They had a child named Opal in 1907. Lucy died around 1913. George and Roy did not stay with Melton Neil after their mother's death. Roy joined the army and was killed in WWI. George was raised by the Whitesale family and ended up in Columbus, GA. Would really appreciate any help on finding the forefathers of William and Lucy.

I was close to my family and some of your info is not correct. Aunt Pricey was the eldest, she was a Posey, Arthur,Nora and Floyd were also Posey's, Uncle Geo as he was known to us was a Wilson. Albert (my grandfater and Buford were Steelmans. Albert McKinley Steelman married Nancy Lou Laura Carter in dec. 1919. Nannie as she was known was born 12/1/1902

1880 census in the city of Phila and county of Phila.
Joesph 52 works @ shoemaking, born in NJ
Maria 51 keeps house, born in PA
samuel 30 shoemaker, born in NJ
Catherine 26 works @ shoe factory, born in NJ
richmond, 16, learning mechanical ed, born in NJ
Willie, 13 in school, born in NJ
Sophia, 10, in school, born in NJ

Also in the 1870 cenus in Fairfield Twp, cumberland Co, NJ

Maria 41 keeps house
Samuel 21 farm hand

Some of these names are different, but they could have died between the cenuses. Mary could be short for Maria.

Looking for info on Ivan Townsend Steelman, b 1905, d 1970. He married Louise M (nee unkn)before 1929. He was one of 14 children. Ivan and Louise had 2 children: Gloria b 1929 d 1996 and a still living son.

I believe they lived in Atlantic County, NJ most of their married life. I don't know where either of them were born.

If you're still there, maybe you could help me out. My ggggg grandfather is Jeremiah Steelman of Tyrell County, NC. Jeremiah married a Kezia Shannon in 1798. I have a hunch (but can't prove yet) that he is the Jeremiah Steelman born 1761 in Atlantic County (or Gloucester Co.) New Jersey to John Steelman and Abigail Sommers Steelman (this John Steelman was a grandson of James and Susannah Toy Steelman). No other Steelmans show up in this part of NC prior to Jeremiah. In the early 1800s Steelman and Stillman became interchangeable in Tyrell and Washington Counties, NC and finally became Stillman.

I'm seeking the descendents of James Steelman, soldier in Lieutenant-General John Johnston's regiment in the Castle of Edinburgh, and Esther, d. to William Sanders, workman at Haddington, in S. S. W. p. (stopt). Their marriage on 16 Dec 1753 in Midlothian: Edinburgh. Listed in the Register of Marriages, 1751-1800, Volume 5. Register of Marriages of the City of Edinburgh. 1751-1800. Errata. County: Midlothia.
I'm wondering if descendents may have migrated to America? My Steelman line in the U.S. does not seem to connect beyond about 1800, and the family story indicates Scottish ancestry in this line. Thank you for any help.

I am searching for my Ggrandfather's neice,she was mentioned in his brothers obit in Findlay,Ohio ,Hancock Co,,her father was Eli Sherman Moore born 1866 in Findlay or around Findlay,,in the Obit it just has him as having 1 daughter a Mrs.R.G Steelman,,Does anyone know of this family and know what her first name was?Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mack Daniel & Florence (Kindred) Steelmon were my great-grandparents. They were my mother's (Cathrine Ann Steelmon)paternal grandparents & her father was Kenneth Clay Steelmon. Mack died 16 Sep 1991, Florence died 25 Aug 1959 & my grandfather Kenneth died 16 Feb 2004.

My mother-in-law is a steelman and I've been doing research into her family. I've only been able to go as far back as Joseph Steelman b. 1828 New Jersey. He married Mary and they had five children: Samuel, Catherine, Richard, William, and Sophia all of New Jersey. Any information as to Joseph's ancestors would be greatly apprecited.

America Steelman was the daughter of James Wiley Steelman, son of John Henry Steelman, son of James Steelman, son of George Steelman, son of Matthias Steelman, who settled in Surry County, North Carolina before the Revolutionary War, having moved there from Murtherkill Hundred, Kent County, Delaware. James Steelman was the brother of my ancestor Charles Steelman. James migrated from Surry County, North Carolina to Lincoln County, Tennessee in the 1820's. I have no information about the descendants of America Steelman, but would like to get this.

John W. Steelman was the son of William Steelman and Nancy Bearden. Their children were:

Prissy Steelman (born April, 1883).
Arthur B. Steelman (born June, 1885).
Nora M. Steelman (born June, 1888).
Floyd Steelman (born March, 1890).
George D. Steelman (born September 1893).
Albert Steelman (born May 16, 1898, died May, 1966) married Nannie __________ (born ca 1903). They resided in Jackson County, Alabama.

You are very far off on the Steelman's being Dutch ... I have quite a few magazine articles proving he was very much a Swede and how the family changed it's name.
You can also visit the Swedish Colonial News website and find where he was a founding father of New Sweden and a short biography about him.
