Matthew Steen

I am looking for information on Matthew Steen born about 1755 in either Antrim or Tyrone County, Ireland. His family immigrated to U.S. that same year and settled near Philadelphia where he married, raised his kids and died. His descendants, according to my info, then came farther north and settled near Cochranton? PA and then scattered. Some Steens in that line are still in PA and the ones I know of are in North-Eastern PA. If anyone can help me I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Jessica Bell

Descendants of Matthew Steen

Matthew Steen was a descendant of a Scotch Covenanter minister, a refugee from religious persecution, who came into Ireland with Oliver Cromwell and others about 1649, and located first in Killinsky, County Down, and afterward in settled in County Antrim, where his descendants continued for several generations. Matthew Steen was probably the son of Richard Steen (?). He was born in 1755, probably at a place called "The Vow," about eight Irish miles from Coleraine, in County Antrim, Ireland.

For more details, see page 361 "The Steen Family", Second Edition, revised and enlarged, by the Rev. Moses D. A Steen. D. D. published in 1917. I have a copy of this book. My mother, Grace Elizabeth Zimmerman, is listed with her siblings at page 387 in the genealogy of Laura Beatrice Scarritt, for whom I was named. Are there any other Steens who are able to trace their ancestry back to the Steens who were Scotch Covenanters? I recently purchased a video on the Scotch Covenanters and it was very good--although it was mostly centered in Scotland.

I have rescued an old photograph of two young women. One is named Hattee Fuqua and the other is identified as Aunt Ora Steen. Due to the style of the photograph, I believe it was taken in the 1890's. I do not know where it may have been taken as there is no location/photographer imprint on this photo. It is a studio photograph, both ladies are dressed in their finest. I rescue old photos and try to return them to their families. I found this photo near Ft. Worth, TX. So, if Hattee Fuqua or Aunt Ora Steen are in your family, or you are interested in this photo, please contact me privately at: jmje36@aol.com.

I am transcribing the Evergreen Cemetary in Ontario, Malheur Co., Oregon and thought I would post pictures of the Pre-1900 headstones for those interested in having them. This is a very large cemetary, there is a possibility there could be other family members buried here after this time period. If you are interested in them, I can look for them specifically.

Benjamin Steen of Marlboro Co., SC

I am descended from Benjamin Steen Sr.(born abt 1779) of Marlboro County, SC, through one of his sons , William (born abt 1819). I believe that his family consisted of wife Martha (b. abt 1785), daughters Mary (b. abt 1809), Jane (b. abt 1831), & Elizabeth (b. abt 1847), and sons Benjamin Jr., William, Morgan (b. abt 1820),& Eli (b. abt 1821). Can anyone confirm or deny this, or hopefully expand upon it?

Most of this is predicated on the 1850 census record for Marlboro County, and I fully realize that Mary could easily be a sister, Jane could be a grand-daughter, and Elizabeth could be a g-grand-daughter because that record is too early to indicate relationships. There are other possibilities as well. But that is the last census record that I pick this family up on.

Also, can anyone tell me who Benjamin Sr. is descended from? I suspect that he came from Union County, SC, but that is just a suspicion; I have no linkage of any kind.

Would appreciate any help.

Thanks.
Lynn Steen

Steens of Marlboro Co., SC

One of my ancestors is belived to be a descendant of John T. Thomas and his wife, Ann, who we believe to have been Ann Steen, possible daughter of James & Nancy Steen. Ann STEEN'S husband, John T. Thomas, was mentioned in a land sale with the Steen family.
1830 US Census finds John Thomas living next door to James Steen in Marlboro Co.,SC.. and two doors down from Benjamin Steen and Andrew Steen..both heads of household. Census indicates John T. Thomas and Ann were both 20-30 years old, and they had two boys in the five yrs old or under column.

1840-- JOhn T. Thomas, with other heirs of J. Steen, he sold to B. Steen 50 acres (SA-4102).

Does anyone have further information on the parentage of Ann Steen Thomas? I would like to exchange info. with any other heirs of James & Nancy Steen.

Joanne Harley
jharley2@suddenlink.com

A new (to me) resource

It seems that many early Steens (including my ancestors) settled in NC, SC and TN during the Colonial and subsequent National periods. DMK Heritage has taken some 19th century books and other data from this period and made them available as transcriptions and .pdf files on CD ROM. Prices range from $15 to $50. Not cheap, but if they can knock through a brick wall, it's worth it!

I have looked at the indices of several of their titles and come up with "hits" for "Steen" in several of them. I just ordered one book, "Sketches of Western North Carolina" and will post a critique after I have looked at it.

Find them at www.dmkheritage.com

Remember the family motto, "Ad Diem Tendo," which means the same as Carpe Diem, but without the fish!

Bill Steen Miller

Steen - Ontario/Stormont from Tyrone County

This information is from census information eastern ontario (Stormont area). I located three different households of Steens in the area. I suspect that they may have been related to each other sine the estimated years of birth were close, and they lived in the same region, and were all born in Ireland. The three steen household heads were:
- James Steen (b. abt. 1816) - ancestor
- Robert Steen (b. abt. 1821)
- Joseph Steen (b. abt. 1822)

-- census derived --

Robert Steen (b. 1821, Ireland), spouse Ann ? (b. 1825 Ireland)
children:
Emma, John S., Olive, Etta, Mary, Lucy

Joseph Steen (b. 1822, Ireland) spouse Catherin ? (b. 1826 - Ireland)
children
Ann J., Margery, James
- Note: Margery (b. 1780, Ireland) widowed was living here - mother probably.

James Steen (b. 1816, Ireland) spouse Elizabeth Ann Hough (b. 1825, Ontario)
children
Margery, Robert Marshal, Sarah, Elizabeth, Jemina, Isaiah, Simeon, Cyrena

-- additional info of James Steen from family --
- believe born in Tyrone (written on back of his photo)
- parents Alexander Steen, Margery/Marjory Marshal
-- could this be the Margery in the Joseph household?

Anyone have additional info?

Steen - County Donegal Ireland

I am descended from Robert Thompson who married MARTHA STEEN at Templemore Co. Derry Ireland in Feb 1828. Martha was born 17 Feb 1806 - place not known but presumably Ireland and possibly Co. Donegal (or perhaps Templemore Co. Derry). I have no information of the parents of either Robert or Martha. Three known children are:-

1. William Thompson married Susan (?Thompson) - my ancestor (10 Children).
2. Robert Thompson married 3 Aug 1857 Muff Co. Donegal Mary Ann Redgate (Dau of Henry Redgate) (6 Children).
3. Mary Ann Elizabeth Thompson (born c.1848, died 13 Apr 1934 Ture Co. Donegal)) married 13 Aug 1873 Londonderry ISAAC STEEN (son of THOMAS STEEN and Elizabeth Barr) (8 Children). Isaac was born 10 Nov 1846 at Moville Co. Donegal and died 4 Nov 1935 Ture Co. Donegal. The relationship (if any) between Martha and Isaac or Thomas is unknown.
Does this connect with anyone's research?

Ship: Ship Vesper, Microfilm Serial No. M237, Microfilm Roll No. 26, List No. 200
The Original Record shows family members:
Samuel Steen, age 47, male, laborer, Ireland
Euphemia Steen, age 46, female, Ireland
William Steen, age 14, male, laborer, Ireland
Samuel Steen, age 10, male, laborer, Ireland
Isabella Steen, age 10, female, spinster, Ireland

Although it's not proven, I believe these to be my family of Steens, and that the elder Samuel Steen & Euphemia, may have died in Pennsylvania. Their sons, William and Samuel, are in the 1850 Huron Co., Ontario, Canada Census.

Does anyone know if the Steen Book would have anything on these Steens?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,
Marla Steen Moore
Steen DNA Project Update

Here are some key points to bring you up to date:

1. FTDNA just annouced a special program, good through year's end. This project has two $30 discounts for 37 or 67 marker tests, two $20 discounts for 25 marker tests, and two $15 discounts for mtDNA tests (must be new orders and paid by 12/31/06. 1st come, 1st served)

2. Here's how you can help your project:
n make sure that we have your pedigree on the Patriarch page coded to your test, and your earliest ancestor listed in the Results table
n contact the researchers you have known through the years and encourage them to participate in this project. If they are hesitant, you can suggest that they post their family pedigree at the Forum as a first step.
n If cost is an issue, suggest they order now and get one of the discounts

3. Post general notices (no cost or specifics) on the surname discussion boards and work together in talking it up

4. This surname project really needs a family member as co-admin to work directly with the participants and families. Perhaps, you can locate one (or would like to do it yourself). More info:
http://www.worldfamilies.net/admin_guide.htm

5. There are two project sites that support this surname project:

Project 6 Page Website:
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/s/steen/
Pedigree Forum:
http://www.wfnforum.net/index.php?topic=3698.0

WorldFamilies.net (www.worldfamilies.net) manages your surname DNA project, as no family member(s) have stepped forward to take leadership. We are happy to continue to manage the project, sending welcome messages, posting results and posting pedigrees until family members step forward. (Note: this is not one of our ancestral surnames and we do no recruiting.)

I am looking for parents of Paralee (Perilee, Parlee, etc.) who married Charles TRICE. Death records for two children (Harriet TRICE SHELEY, and Odon Charles TRICE) list Paralee as born in Missouri near Joplin. She is with Charles TRICE in census record for 1880, MO, Cooper County list birthplace as Kansas. Her maiden name may have been MILLER as she may have married a STEEN before she married Charles TRICE. Questions include where/when she was born? When/where did she married Charles TRICE? Did she marry a STEEN before she married TRICE? Did she divorce Charles TRICE before 1891?
She died in 1893, El Dorado, Kansas and her obituary mentions she is wife of C.Y. but no details. Strange.

Searching for Steen/Ronaldson family of Scotland, possibly Edinburgh.
I have a relative Mary Steen Ronaldson who married Dr. Thomas Benjamin Noble of Indianapolis, Indiana after WWI
she immigrated to the U.S. probably about 1919 and there is rumor that they married in Scotland before coming to the U.S.

I have a picture of an infant, on the back it says "baby John Steen Ronaldson" and since she carries Steen as a middle name, I am sure that would have been her mother's maiden name.

If there is anyone who is related to this family, please contact me. I would love to exchange information and photos with you.

John and Sarah STEEN Jeffries - Brick House near Gaffney SC

I Thought the list might enjoy seeing the home of John Jeffries and Sarah Steen. Sarah was the sister of Revolutionary War patriot Lt. Colonel James Steen (my GGGetc Grandfather).

The house was built in 1804 from bricks imported from England and boated/carted from Charleston to the Gilkey Creek area. To the left is the original frame house they built before the bricks arrived.

The house overlooks a meadow and Gilkey Creek. GORGEOUS!

Steen Reference Book

In the Spartanburg (SC) County Library, I came across an excellent book that covers the life and history of the early Steens in NC and SC. Included is a great deal of information on Revolutionary War patriot Lt. Col. James Steen as well as other notables such as col. Gideon Steen from whom Mr. Kirby derives
.

The book has the deceptive name, "The Kirby and Related Families of SC, AL &GA."

The book is authored and self-published by Joseph F Kirby. It had limited circulation, so don't expect to find it on Amazon!

But you may be able to get a copy from the author at 275 Harrell Dr. Spartanburg, SC, 29307. When I bought my copy, he asked for "$20 or $25," and I sent him $35 since the figures seemed too low!

EXCELLENT info on this branch of the Steen clan!

Looking for information someone may have on Edward's family in Ireland. I believe his father's name is Robert and mother's is Susannah. He apparently has 4 other siblings older than him. Not sure how much of the family actually came out to Adelaide in 1858, it appears just to be him at this stage. He married Alice HANNAM in Adelaide, having 12 children and died at the young age of 65 in 1911.

Of their ten children, Andrew Steen Robinson, was my grandfather. Names and dates of birth for Jane and all of the children are taken from the family bible in my possession. Family lore says Jane and Matthew were from Derry. This family is listed in the 1880 census for Philadelphia. I am seeking information on the county in Ireland from which they came. Children: John Richard (1859), Frances Josephine (1862), and George Jackson (1864).

George Jackson Steen married Cornelia Jane (Nellie) Wood (b.1867) in Bosque Co., Texas in 1884.

Children: Newt Steen (1885-1886); Ada May Steen (1887-1891);
Wessie Mossell Steen (1889-1958) m. Robert Newton Adair in 1909 in Shackleford Co., Texas; Ima Genie Steen (1891-1991) m. I. L. Griffith in 1907 in Texas; Roberta Steen (1893-1967) m. Oliver Davis Allen in 1912 in Pueblo, Texas; Guy Foster Steen (1895-1978) m. Margaret Alma Gunn in 1918 in Eastland Co., Texas; Bula Steen (1897-1979) m. R. J. Bullard about 1919; Glen Earl Steen (1911-1993) m. Carrie Jeanette Chambers.

I got all this info off the LDS site, and I have been unable to verify it, or connect with the submitter. Cornelia Jane (Nellie) Wood was the sister of my great grandmother. I would really like to verify this info....and hopefully connect up with some living descendants. I am currently involved with about 20 other researchers, compiling data on the Lindsey line...Cornelia Jane Wood's mother was Margaret Lindsey. I would really like to find some of the descendants of Cornelia Jane and George Jackson Steen, so they could participate in this research.

Please contact me directly at barbdale@flash.net

Barbara Craddock Pike
Steen Origins

Dear Kathleen, I am very interested in your saying your family came from Holland. One of my Cousins in MO. just found me, and we have both been told by our Fathers, who were Brothers, that we were descendants of Jan Steen, the Artist, who was from Holland! However, the Steen Book written by Rev. D.A. Moses Steen states our GGGrandfather, Robert Steen came from Ireland. I have traced our Family back as far as our GGGgrandfather John Steen to Londonderry, Ireland, but then hit a brick wall, so am wondering if he came from Holland! They had to get the story from their Father and we have some very good artists in our Family, so I have to wonder if they are correct! If you could help me, I would greatly appreciate any info you could give me on the Holland Steens. Thanking you in advance! My e-mail is JaneSteen74@webtv.net

Apparently she had a son by a former marriage because in 1870 Census in Cleburne County AL they had a stepson John W. Sills living with them. It looks like John W. Sills was born around 1863. They had children James W., William H., Margarette, Arletha, Samuel, George B. and others. Some of these children appear to be children of Elizabeth and some from a previous wife of George's based on the ages. Does anyone have any information on this family?
