Dear Andy, Viv and Lorna and others,

Your messages were eventually posted to the Steer Roots Group. I believe that William Sture, the furthest back I can get with the family you all mention, is a brother of George Sture [1684-1760] from whom I am descended.

I am pasting what I have on the "Jasper Steers" after my signature. I hope it help and would appreciate any corrections or further information. My info should print out on A4 paper.

Best wishes,

Philip Steer

FIRST GENERATION
[II] WILLIAM STURE

married on 13th May 1712 at Churchstow to AGNES CRANCH [IIa]

Note : I have added these because it is possible that WILLIAM and AGNES STURE   [at the head of the “Jasper” branch of the Steer family] are related to GEORGE and SARAH STURE [note that G & S’s second son is William].   Also there is a William Sture : buried 25th February 1770 at  Aveton Gifford and his wife AGNES : buried 7th August 1768 at Aveton Gifford : so they might just be this couple.

Note : On 14th July 1707 Jasper CRANCH married Mary PEARCE in Churchstow.

Note : references to Ann, wife of William Sture, being buried in Aveton Gifford in 1774 may well refer to the wife of yeoman William, who signed an indenture dated 1779 relating to a property called Langland in Aveton Gifford, in which he is referred to as William STEER of Bennish, Ruston Gifford !
