George Stein and Catherine Angelina Liebenthal from Wilsenroth

I am researching my great-great-grandfather, George Stein (1818-1896), and his wife, Catherine Angelina Liebenthal (1821-1889). They were pioneer founders of Menasha, Wisconsin. My research indicates they lived in Wilsenroth, which at that time was in Prussia but now in Hesse (Germany), near Limburg an der Lahn. It's not clear where they lived before Wilsenroth, but they emigrated in 1852. It is possible they first landed in Maryland, lived for a year in Louisville, Kentucky and then relocated to Menasha, Wisconsin.
A researcher in Germany has confirmed that they lived in Wilsenroth from about 1849 until 1852. Anyone else have relatives that came from Wilsenroth?

STEIN from Schuylkill County

Looking for Stein from Schuylkill County (Pottsville area)
My great grandmother was married to John Hornung at St. John the Baptist Church about 1879 a witness was Delmaria Stein as well as Mr Powell a wagon maker. Her name was listed as Nellie but in future references in the census was listed as Lillie. Her family was not of the Catholic faith although she married in the Catholic Church (I believe should could have been Lutheran). By 1890 my great grand parents moved from Pottsville to Port Richmond in Northeastern Philadelphia. My great grand father painted the wagons and eventually the rail cars with the fancy gold guilded advertising.

Hi, Interesting you should post.

A piece of my history that I have not been able to verify first hand is a connection to the John Stein/Anna Maria Barbara Gebhardt line. I have been told that your Anna Margaretha had a younger brother Christopher Stein, who married Eva Stroh. They in turn had a son David Stein/Stine who is my paternal GG Grandfather (so we would be the same generation).

Do you know of any database of this cemetery available on line? There are reference books posted but they are pricey if they don't have info I can use.

TIA from a probable distant "cousin!"
Debra Heller Stein 1961-2009

Debra Heller Stein, a nationally recognized land use expert, public affairs professional and published author who counseled some of the largest developers in San Francisco and across the United States died suddenly of complications related to a rare neurological disease on July 30. She was 48 years old. President of GCA Strategies in San Francisco, Debra graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in political management and held a law degree from the University of San Francisco. Debra was an expert in building community support and finding political solutions for land use projects. She was the author of four books on the subject as well as numerous articles related to development and smart growth. She was considered one of the country's top experts on NIMBYism and was often called to speak at land use conferences and events nationally. She had a particular soft spot for affordable housing, and worked on several projects throughout the country. She was a member of the International Association of Participation Professionals, the Association for Conflict Resolution, the Urban Land Institute, and the California Bar Association. Debra was an alumnus of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority at Cal. She was active in the California Democratic Party and a strong supporter of women's rights, particularly issues around choice. Debra was married to noted architect Jeffrey Heller, whom she met in 1986 while they were working on a project at San Francisco City Hall. They married in 1987. They had an active professional collaboration and traveled the world in their spare time, just returning last month from a driving trip throughout Southern France. Debra was smart, compassionate, gracious, practical, selfless and generous. Never one to pass up the opportunity to help, she was a tireless advocate for the underdog. She and Jeff recently sponsored a young man with little chance for college through Cal Poly. Debra was an avid reader of historical fiction, and a passionate Jane Austen devotee. She served as co-chair of the Northern California chapter of the Jane Austen society and gave a presentation on "Status, Social Climbing and the Meaning of Gentility in Emma" at the organization's past international conference in Canada. She was an accomplished chef who loved international cooking and cuisine. She took classes at the Royal Thai Cooking School and was a member of the renowned Chaine des Rotisseurs. She had also been a member of the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of San Jose (now the Lyric Theatre), and participated in many productions, along with other members of her family. In addition to husband Jeffrey Heller, Debra is survived by stepdaughter Rebecca Heller and her husband, Thomas Gallagher, sister Sharon Moerner, her husband Weo and their son, Daniel, and brother Doug Stein, wife Eileen and their sons Robert and Andrew. Deb is predeceased by her parents, Dr. Ruth P. Stein and Dr. Michel Stein. Private services have already been held. There will be a public celebration of Debra's life Wednesday, August 19 at 5pm at the North Light Court San Francisco City Hall. In celebration of Debra's love of good food, guests are invited to bring something to share. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Debra's name to the charity of your choice.

Published in San Francisco Chronicle from August 5 to August 11, 2009

He was married to Fannie, nee Bader. Bothe came to Chicago with my grandfather, Harry (b: 1903). Meyer is believed to have has to brothers, Sam & Harry, and three sisters, Lena, Ruth, and Vera (all younger).

Meyer's father, my great-great-grandfather, came to Chicago one time for my father's bar-mitzvah (ca: 1939). I am trying to find out his name, and his wife's name and place of origin.

I am also trying to find out Sam and Harry's Steins information in order to see if I have other relatives "out there" possibly in NY or otherwise.

I am searching for descendants of Karl Wilhelm Stein from "Zeuden Bei, Niemegk, Brandenburg, Preussen". He was married to Maria Dorothea Polster. I think they had Johanna Florentine Agnes Stein born 1828, Franziska Maria Wilhelmine Stein born 1929 and Ernst Wilhelm Christian Stein born 1832 all in Niemegk. I am searching for Otto Stein born 1862 also in Niemegk and whom immigrated to US. Their ancestors were nobility in Brandenburg and possibly Prague, Czech. Maria Dorothea Polster's father was Johann David Polster born 1737 in Niemegk and married Johanna Sophia Christinneck born 1760 in nearby Dahnsdorf, Brandenburg, Prussia. I have many ancestors born in Niemegk,Belzig, Dahnsdorf and Haseloff, Brandenburg. My ggg grandfather was Johann Joachim Bernhard Christian Christineck born 1736 in Haseloff, Administrative District of Potsdam, Brandenburg, Prussia and his wife, my ggg grandmother, was Christiana Elisabeth Paul born 1753 in Belzig, Brandenburg. (his first wife was Johanna Maria Lanckin born 1738 in Belzig).

Please contact: Jeanne Lorf Linley Harding
jeannelinley2000@yahoo.com
I wonder if anyone has STEIN family in Prussia or areas that were once part of the Soviet Union? I am searching for information about a Charlotte STEIN born around 1861 in Konigsberg (now known as Kalinigrad). She marred Edward Isidore FUNK and the family ended up in Newcastle, UK, by way of Berlin, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Edward himself was born in Courland/Kurland which I understand was once part of Russia but now is in Latvia.

Regards

Carol in Berkshire, UK

Hello,

My maternal grandfather was Anton Stein (b. Brandon, Manitoba, 02 Sept 1908; d. Chicago, IL 16 April 1968 - I believe you have this incorrectly posted as 02 April).

My mother is Sabina (Stein) Peknik (b. 29 July 1946), Anton's third child (his first child with his second wife, Phylis (Wozniak) Stein (m. 1941 - she was b. 11 Feb 1913 - d. 25 Feb 1983). His fourth child is Spencer (b. 1951). Prior to marring Phylis, he was married to Elenore __???__ and had two children (Sue b.~1932 and Tom (deceased) b.~1934 both from the Chicago area - my mother has little info on them).

Anton was the son of Raimund and Susanna. They had four girls (Anna, Ada, Susanna and Winnefred) and three boys (Peter, Anton and Harry). Anton was one of the last to be born to them, we believe.

Anton came to Chicago in 1930. He became a US citizen and fought in WW2. I can also put you in touch with my parent's email address.

Likewise, if you have information about this branch of my family tree, I would be interested to see it.
Hello

I am researching Hannah Green who married Charles Stein in 1907. Charles Stein was the son of Nathan Stein and Sarah Tobias. Hannah and Charles Stein had one son named Maxwell. Please could you contact me. I am wondering whether the Stein family are still in England...

Best regards
Dominique

My great great grandfather (George Stein) moved to America from Dankmarshausen with his father Conrad (Konrad) Stein and settled in Philadelphia. George & both of his sons (my great grandfather Robert and his brother George) were both jewelers and relocated to Alabama around the turn of the century. My grandmother attended some Stein family reunions in Pennsylvania but not sure if same family.

Dominique

Nathan and Sarah Stein are my wife's great great grandparents. The 1881 Census for Bedford Street, Tower Hamlets (RG11/0444, Folio 10, P13) shows the family living at number 81. Nathan is shown as 36 and a bootmaker, Sarah as 27. Nathan says that he was born in Wurtemburg, Germany but a naturalised British subjects. Sarah says that she was born in Middlesex City. The children are listed as: Julia (8), Jane (7), Henry (6), Helena (4), Eva (3) and Mark (1).

Two other addresses for the family are 21 Heneage Street, Spitalfields and 23 New Street, Whitechapel. The first of these is just off Brick Lane and close to a school built at about the time of the census with a rather elegant engraving of the previous building high on its wall. The address in New Street now bears a plaque saying "The meeting of the mission which was to become known as the Salvation Army was held here on 3rd September 1865".

Harry married Anastasia Coleman in Stepney on 9th October 1897 and they had a daughter, Eva, who was born on 10th April 1898. The 1901 census will provide a few more details of the Stein family - although they occasionally used the name Stain to sound more English.

Tony

Stein family New York Philip, Ida, David, Frances, Myrna

Am trying to find relatives of the Stein family, who lived in New York. Great grandfather Philip passed away at age 51 (probably late '40s or early '50s) and was married to Ida (passed away around '83). I know he owned some pharmacies in New York. They had three children- Frances, David and Myrna.

I believe David married Mickey (not sure of maiden name) and they had two children, Jeff and Ellen. I believe Ellen is in her 50s and Jeff is a little younger. Myrna married Manny and I am not sure of the last name, but know they had moved to Miami at some point.

If you may have any info, please let me know!

April 1786
Died 27 Aug 1865
79 years 4 months 22 days

Photo from Jacob's Lutheran Church in Pine Grove.

Dates do not seem to match what folks have in their published family trees.
I recently visited Jacob's Lutheran Church ("White Church) Cemetery in Pine Grove, Schuylkill Co., PA and Salem Walmer's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Jonestown, Lebanon Co., Pennsylvania and took photos of gravestones related to the Stine/Stein family.

Many of the stones are in poor condition, but I used a combination of zooming and other detective work to fill in as much data as I could. If anyone can provide additional info or corrections, it would be appreciated!

Rather than post the photos one by one, I am providing a database of what I have. Contact me via my profile or by osting here for copies of photos ... ask by photo number. Unfortunately for me, most of these are not my DIRECT ancestors ...
Death of Paul Stein

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 29 September 1893 ...

There died at the asylum one day this week a foreigner who went by the name of Paul Stein. He was brought here from Sherman sometime ago and confined. The peculiar form of his mania induced him to enter houses armed with an ax and demand something to eat. On his arrest it was developed that the poor fellow was insane and not an intentional law breaker. Prior to his removal to the asylum here he was placed in the county asylum at Sherman, where he twisted and bent the strong steel bars of his cage as though they were bits of wife. Stein was a perfect Hercules in strength.

Hi Fiona,
I'm Mike Stein from West Aust. My 6 times great grandfather was Andrew Stein who was a bailiffe of Clackmannan. I have created a Stein website on "My Heritage" which you may be interested in but to gain access I will need to invite you via email. Should you wish to contact me direct then do so at: MIKE_NOLA@bigpond.com.au by email. The Stein's, Haig's, Jameson's and Carron's were very inter-married with many cousins tying the knot.
Last year my wife and I went to Alloa and Clackmannan and went in search of Kennetpans on foot from Clackmannan to take pics of the old distillery and hopefully of any remaining Stein cottages but sadly we lost our way, ran out of time and were exhausted and empty handed with only a few pics of the Clackmannan Church and some gravestones to show for our effort.
Our family arrived in Aus. in 1883 (my gt grandfather) who was 24ys and a surveyor who graduated at the Dollar Academy.
If interested I look forward to sharing my research of the Stein & Haig families with you.
Regards,
Mike Stein
