Steiners' from Switzerland to Washington State.
Looking for family connections to Steiner brothers who came
from Switzerland about 1904. Their destination was Tacoma,
Washington. This information is from New York Passenger lists. Two brothers came in 1904, Alois and Franz. Another
came in 1906, who was Joseph. The Ships record states that he was going to his brother Louis' in Tacoma.
I hope to find someone connected to these brothers, in order to clarify and further research. Any help will be very
much appreciated.

STEINER, Oscar

Hello. I'm looking for information on the family of Oscar Steiner. He was born in Zurich, Switzerland, on 5 Dec 1890, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1912. Shortly thereafter he married Hertha Leona Hanke (b. 1896 in New Hampshire) and they had two children, Hertha Hermine "Hermine" Steiner (b. 1915) and Irwin Oscar "Jack" Steiner (b. 1917), both born in New York. Hermine Steiner later married Robert Ovid Turner, and I am unaware of the name of Jack Steiner's first wife. His second wife's name was Margaret.

Any information you might have would be greatly appreciated!

I'm glad to see there are many Steiners out there.
I'm from Pulaski, WI and I'm currently 31 years old.

With some minor research I've discovered that Steiner means:

Steiner Name Meaning and History

German and Jewish (Ashkenazic): occupational name for someone who worked with stone: a quarryman, stonecutter, or stonemason; an agent derivative of Stein.
Topographic name for someone who lived on stony ground or near a prominent outcrop of rock.

Which would make sense, the guys used to call me Stoner in High School. I guess they weren't just projecting personal habits into my last name... huh?

Hi! My name is Matthew Steiner. My family comes from the Newark, NJ area. I am trying to figure out my past. My father is John Frank, son of William George, son of Frank Peter Steiner. Frank had many brothers and sisters: eddie, joe, mary, julie, johnny, charlie, eva, frank, and william. Thier father, I believe, was Joseph Steiner.

I have made a family tree at www.myheritage.com

Are we cousins?

please send responses to: froggy_splat@yahoo.com

thank you

Catherine Frey, eldest daughter of Johann Abraham Frey/Fry (1768-1850) and Catherine Kamb/Kamp (1771-btwn.1810-1850) was baptised at Zion (Moselem) Lutheran Church, Richmond Twp,Berks County, PA. The family moved to Union County, PA about 1796. She married an unknown Steiner and had two children, I'm assuming Steiner was from Union County also. Would like to find out who Catherine's husband and children were.

Well, I replied but the attachments must've overloaded the system, so I'll do it in parts and maybe this will go through.

The 1930 says:

"Old identification card lifted 6/24/35 and sent to the Bureau Re-entered 6/24/35"

It appears they lived in Pedro Miguel, C.Z. (Canal Zone) for 6 years before they returned to the US in 1935.

The Bluffton-Pandora area is a strong Mennonite area, and you might find him on the www.omii.org. There are large databases - and you should check the Kidron database and the Hostetler database. From your history, this Steiner family emigrated from Canton Berne to the Alsace-Lorraine area to escape religious persecution, as they were known as taufers - or anabaptists. The Kidron database has many from the Bluffton-Pandora area, while the Hostetler database has more of the Amish.

Many immigrants arrived in the late 1810s - following the famine from bad crops, or into the 1820s. Some were dragooned into Napoleon's army, as they were pacifists, but this designation was not respected, save for putting them in non-combatant roles such as teamster/wagoners.

If you round it on the Kidrone database, and it tracks back to Daniel Steiner and Marie/a Suter, then it tracks back to Hans Joachim Steiner, who had seven sons. There is a family tree that was drawn by Sem Geiger and researched by his wife Katie, around the turn of the 20th century. There were at least three reunions, and there are many copy of that tree that are so well done that most people believe that theirs is an original one, but if one looks closely, there are four plates. The horizonital line is about at 3 degrees off the 90-180 degree line. You can see a copy of the tree and the plates that were ueed to print it at the Kidron Community Museum The best day to go is on a Thursday - for that is market day nad that's when there is a life stock auction There is also a history of the tree that is available for purchase that is a reprint from Mennonite Family History.

You can also see a picture of the Steiner-Kauffman house in Normanvillars, in Delbert Gratz's book, entitled Bernese Anabaptists and their American Descendants. This was a 1953 PhD thesis, but it is commonly available Search for www.bookfinder.com Make sure that you don't call up the plural site.

no time to read the replies of the others, so you might already know. but if you look for jacob f. steiner check jacob friedrich and not freidrich steiner. coz friedrich ist the german name, freidrich is probably a mistake or a a way to reach a right pronounciation by flipping the ei like they often did to my name to "stiener".
maybe you are lucky, greetings, f.st. from germany

Did you ever get answers on your Jacob and Rosa Steiner in Wilkin MN?...They were the "next door neighbors" of our Kuehne ancestors who were from Rieden, St Gallen SW. Our Alois Kuehne's mother was Agnes Steiner Kuhne. Because they were neighbors in MN, I always figured our Kuehnes and the next door Steiners were related and maybe came over together.
