Hi, just read your post on Joseph Andrew Stephens who was also my grandfather. My father, Melvin Arthur Stephens, was Othar's brother. I have a small photo of Joseph Andrew Stephens and a beautiful photo of Annie Amanda Law who was part Cherokee. I know her father was Peyton or Payton Law according to my mom, Christine Stephens, who passed away 5 years ago.

I'd love to hear from you!

Linda Russo, a "Stephens" cousin who is researching the descendants of Francis Calaway Stephens found your Martha C. McGuire in the 1880 and 1910 Census records.
Jan,

I just replied to your post and then noticed the second part of your post about Sarah Little's 9 children. Note that "Frank" was a nickname for Francis Calaway. Also, Ella was Frank's daughter. So you can remove Frank and Ella from the list of children for Sarah. As mentioned in my previous reply, I believe that Sarah had two children die in infancy. My grandmother's account of Sarah's struggles during the Civil War mentioned her trek from Lawrence County, AL to her fathers home in Calhoun County, AL after her home was burned by northern raiders. My grandmother mentioned her begging for milk for her babies. This was about 1864 or 1865 when this happened. Now, her youngest known child is Alexander born in 1858 and he would have been about 6 years of age and hardly a baby in 1964. I believe that Sarah had one or two children born after 1860 and that these may have died from malnutrition prior to the 1870 Census where she is living in Trigg county, KY and enumeerated under the surname Stevens. At that time, Alexander was her youngest.

Re: Martha E. Stephens (1838-1918) d/o Calloway Stephens & Sarah Little

Jan,
I may be the person responsible for connecting the Martha E. Stephens who married Geo McGuire in Tallapoosa County, AL to Calaway Stephens and Sarah Ann Little. These were my gg-grandparents. I am descended from their daughter Arletha who married Richard Carol Owen in Newton County, AR in 1874. The only record that I have ever found of their daughter Martha (during my 25 years of researching this family) is the 1850 Census for Tallapoosa County, AL, Twp 23, page 81, enumerated on 28 Dec 1850 as follows:

Dwelling 1168:
Stephens, Joshua 56 M Farmer SC
Elizabeth 56 F SC
Mary 31 F SC
Nancy 22 F GA
Sarah Ann 18 F GA
Adaline 16 F GA
Lucinda 14 F GA
Elvira 12 F GA
Henry 8 M AL
Joshua 6 M AL
Dwelling 1169:
Stephens, Caloway 26 M Farmer SC (sp. Calaway)
Sarah Ann 26 F GA
Martha E. 8 F GA
Mary 6 F AL
John W. 4 M AL
Francis C. 2 M AL

I have a photo of Calaway's tombstone where he is buried in the Stephens family private cemetery near Wayne, Marengo County, AL. This tombstone has his name spelled "Calaway" and his birth as Oct 13, 1823 and death as July 5, 1862. This tombstone record is inconsistent with both census records and his CSA Army pay records and appears to be off one year in both dates. Should be born Oct 13, 1824 and died July 5, 1863.

His wife Sarah's tombstone in Elm Branch Cemetery, Ellis County Texas has her birth date as July 17. 1819 while the census record above points to a year of birth as 1824..same as Calaway's. So we have a 5 year descrepancy here. From all the other records I have found, including the 1900 Census, her year of birth was in 1822.

I wanted to establish correctly their year of births to know how old they were when they married. From Sarah's personal bible in her own handwritting, she wrote that she was married on Jan 10, 1841 making her age as 18-1/2 and his a little past 16 when they married.

Their first child, Martha E. reported to be 8 years old when the census was taken in Dec 1850, was thus born sometime in 1842 which is not inconsistent with the marriage date for Cal and Sarah.

Now there is a marriage record in the LDS IGI index marriage record for Tallapoosa Co., AL showing that on 26 January 1854 a Martha (no middle initial) Stephens married a George B. McGuire, b. May 28, 1834 in Bibb, AL. If this is Calaway's daughter Martha, she would have only been between 11 and 12 years old at that time.

Next, lets go the the 1860 Census for Tallapoosa Co, AL, Western District, Pg 50, dwelling 341 where we find:

McGuire, George 28 M Millwright GA
Martha C. 22 F GA
Cordelia C. 3 F AL
George W. 4 M AL
Annie E. 2 F AL
Brown, Gilly 65 F NC

Note first that her middle initial is "C.", not "E." and if her age is correct, she was born in 1838 (4 years before my Martha E. Stephens) and would have been 15-16 years old when
she and George married.

1870 Census for Clay Co., AL, Twp 21, Range 8, Pages 22-23
Dwelling 167:
McGuire, George 36 M W Millwright GA
Martha 31 F W Keeps House GA
Cordelia 15 F W AL
George 14 M W AL (George Jr.?)
Ann E 12 F W AL
Wm 10 M W AL
Amanda 7 F W AL
Henry W 4 M W AL
Mary A 2 F W AL
Nancy 21 F W GA (likely S-I-L)
Annie E 2 F W AL (Nancy's dau?)
Brown, Gilly 74 F W NC (grandmother?)

From the 1860 Census record, we see that the wife of George McGuire is Martha C. Stephens, thus she differs in both middle initial and in age by 4 years from Calaway's daughter Martha.

I have searched for both George McGuire and Martha McGuire in later census records for all states (1880, 1900, 1910) and was unable to find either of them.

Now, you say that your ancestor Martha Stephens who married George McGuire died in 1918. You will find Calaway Stephens widow, Sarah A. Stephens living in a boarding house in Kerens, Navarro County, Texas in 1910. Her second daughter, Mary A. Stephens who married James Harvey Alexander in 1868, had just died in Kerens the previous October and her widowed son-in-law James Harvey Alexander is living also in Kerens with his son John D. Alexander. In her census record, Sarah Ann (who is the mother of Martha E. Stephens) stated that she was the mother of 9 children with only 4 still living. I know of only seven children that she had from the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census records and I conclude that she likely had two children to die in infancy. Her oldest son, John Wiley Stephens died in Vernon, Wilbarger County, Texas in 1909 and I can account for the four living children in 1910 who were Francis Calaway, Joseph Richard, Arletha, and Alexander. So I conclude that her daughter Martha E. Stephens was not alive in 1910.

What happened to Calaway and Sarah's daughter, Martha E. Stephens who is found in their household at age 8 in 1850? I don't know. I am of the personal belief that Martha died young (likely before 1860) as there was no historical correspondance or other mention of her by family members. My own grandmother Texas who was Arletha's daughter and who had her grandmother Sarah living in her household when she was growing up could not tell us anything about Martha or what became of her when she was interviewed and tape recorded in a 1978 session where she retold the stories of her grandmother Sarah's youth, marriage and struggles.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

William Gorman
Hi Jennifer!

Since you asked, Liberty Hall plantation is now owned by the State of Georgia. It was given to them to care for many years ago after the death of Alexander Hamilton Stephens, VP Confederate States of America.
The state created a state park to enclose the lands and make them accessible in perpetuam to the public. The park is called A.H. Stephens State Park, and is on US 20, next to Crawfordsville, GA. The home and grounds have been meticulously preserved and are open to the public Wednesdays- Fridays.
I am AHS' 1st cousin, 4x removed. May I ask what your family bible states that causes you to seek this information? What leads you to believe the relation (though I noticed your last name)? Any idea how it ended up in Czechoslavakia?
Perhaps we can share information, as I have researched my family for years.
Thanks, I look forward to your reply!
O Stephens

Just saw your note. Capt. Alexander Stephens is my ggggGrandfather. I have the following:

He was a Jacobite, opponent of HRH Geo.II, supporter HRH Prince Charles Edward Stuart, "Bonnie Prince Charlie", in England, Fled Scotland, pursued by HRH Geo II. Emmigrated to Wm. Penn colony, joined fight against crown (Geo. II), and served under Washington as Captain in Colonial Army, American Revolution. Also occupied as Indian trader. Later fought in French and Indian War.
He was a descendent of the attorney-general to HRH Henry VIII, as Henry, Prince of Wales, before 1509, and under HRH Henry VII (per Daughters of American Revolution).
Petitioned and received a Land Grant--Taliaferro Country, Georgia. "On October 11, 1785 Alexander Stephens, of Rye Township, Cumberland Co. was given certificate #6552 for compensation for a tour of active duty under Capt. Samuel Leaman. He signed the receipt 'Alexander Stephens.' " (Division of Public Records, Pa. Historical and Museum Commission, Harrisburg). Stephens Family Genealogies.

He was married to Catherine Baskins of Lancaster County, PA. They had:
Sarah Stephens Coulter,
Elizabeth Coulter,
Jane Stephens (infant death),
Nehemiah Stephens,
Andrew Baskins Stephens I (father of the illustrious AHS),
John Stephens,
Mary Stephens Jones,
James Stephens.

Capt Alexander and Catherine buried in family grave at the family home, Liberty Hall plantation, GA., as are several other family members.

You can find them all on Rootsweb, but have to begin with Alexander Hamilton Stephens and search...
Good luck with it!

Re: More Info on Alexander H. Stephens

Do you have either of these direct ancestors:
Aaron Grier Stephens (of GA);
John Alexander Stephens (of GA)?
If so, then your statement "Alexander H. Stephens was an uncle to my g-g-grandfather, Alexander Nephi Stephens" is quite possible. If, instead, you have one of these direct ancestors:
John Lindsey Stephens (GA);
Benjamin Bullock Stephens (GA);
then the relationship would be "Alexander H. Stephens was the half-uncle of my g-g-grandfather, Alexander Nephi Stephens"
The real test would be if the name Andrew Baskins Stephens I is a direct ancestor, as this was AHS's father.
Otherwise, it would not possible.

BTW, the field of research of Alexander H. Stephens is rather vast and strewn across the country, with libraries housing most of the collections: Stanford, Maryville University, Emory University, and as one would expect the University of GA. Emory and UGA especially are rich sources.
And of course the restored family plantation is in Taliaferro County, Ga., is called Liberty Hall, and is run by the state, to whom it was given, as a museum.
Hope this helps-

O. Stephens, (AHS 1st Cousin 4x removed)
I am a 1st cousin 4x removed. A H Stephens never married and had no children. Thus there is no such thing as a direct descendant.

But your wife may be related to the Griers or Salters or Slaytons or Dardens or Baskinses or Coulters who married into the line.

But directly from Aleck? No.

Fixing up the family tree - John Roger Stephens

My mother Mary Margaret is the daughter of John Roger Stephens who was born in around 1921.

There's connections evidently beyond to Goode, Browne, Bailey, vasey(sp?), Allebaugh

Mary Margaret married Robert Still Haldeman in 1981, Divorced in 1999. Married again in 1999 to John Macky Somerville (Of New Zealand)

I have Margaret Irene Browne as the daughter of Cedric (Browne) and Lesta (Woods) - No clue of Cedric's father or Lesta's parents. Allebaugh/Allenbaugh or something close is on this side of the family.

John Roger Stephens (II) is the son of William Roger Stephens (?) and Irene Goode (daughter of John Goode and Mary Bailey)

On my father's side it's Robert Still the son of Shirley Cotter Still (Haldeman) and John Clayton Haldeman (3rd) with strong ties to swiss families in Bucks Co. PA.

Any clues let me know (We have some but mom can't find the papers we have with this information)

Evidently the Stephens/Browne/Goode era has Bucks. Co. PA as well?

Was your Sigurdur Thorstensson Sigfusson a son of Thorstein Sigfusson (1867-1924) and Steinvor Arnfridur Dagson (1873-1952)? If so he had an older brother named Eggert, who was born 1898 in Badger, South Dakota, and died 31 May 1964 in Wynyard, Saskatchewan. I'm researching for a friend who's a grand-daughter of Eggert. Care to exchange information?

Wendy
