Hello! My Maiden name is Stepney. I was born in
Depew Oklahoma, the daugter of Joseph Stepney. He was born in Borenton, Oklahoma. His fathers name was Noah. His father's father name was also Noah, and the father before that was also named noah. Our family historian says they were Chicasaw Indians and Black listed on the Freedman Creek Roll. I don't know how much truth there is in the statement. I do know that my father received a sum of money from the Creek Indians when I was very young. I don't have alot of information other than the family name having began in England.

Hi,
I have the name, but inherited from marriage to Alan Stepney in the late eighties (we are now divorced) I worked for many years in the east end of London and regularly went to Stepney, I once read that this place name was a corruption of Stebben Heath which got shortened over the years to Step-ney, I beleive this is quite an old place name like lots of London place names, but don't know whether this is how the sirname got started, lost in the mists of time I guess!
My ex husband's family came from Suffolk in east Anglia, but Stepneys don't seem to be exclusive to this part of the world.

I'm looking for information on my Grandfather Perry Jefferson Stepney (or Stephney) born in Missouri, Married (I think) to my Grandmother, Grace May Payne born in Montana, Daughter (my Mother) Phanie Irene born in Lincoln, Nebraska. Story in my family is that he was or looked Irish. My Grandmother looked English but is said to have been Native American from the Black Foot tribe. My Mother looked and past for white now and then to get work etc. (I messed all that "passing" up though.) I'm trying to find distant relatives of any and all of these people. I found a Perry James Stepney in Texas but He doesn't know about any Stepneys in Mo. He has an interesting story of a Stephney in Lee County, Texas being shoot and lynched for being outspoken. He couldn't remember the relatives first name. He can be reached at pstep10276@aol.com

I am gradually accumulating information on the Stepney families.

(There are only around 200 households in the UK and a similar number in the USA. )
Historically, teh numbers were much much lower so it is obvious that there are many who are linked.

Anyone who is also seeking information is welcome to contact me to exchange info.
Nope. Sorry. Your information cannot be accurate there.
Possibly originally slaves, but not in England at that time. We had done away with it before then. The railway was never called that.
However, if there is a chance that yoru family came from England (and were not named after a Stepney that was already in the USA, look at the post of mine under "Stepney's inEngland.

Stepney's in England

last time a family member checked, there were about 200 households in England and roughly the same number in the USA with the name Stepney.

Logically, the majority were people who had
originally come from Stepney (the district in East London) and then lived elsewhere.
Most stayed in the area now covered by greater London (then separate villages) but there is a large number in Sussex, and a few in the north of England.

Some of the US Stepney's were originally
orphans from Dr Barnadoes home (which was /is in Stepney). they used to use several names when for the children they found, Stepney being one of them.As the children grew older,
they used to try to place as many as possible work, and some went to the USA, mostly around Illinois and to farms there.

Stepney Railroad

I must admit I'm very excited to hear of so many Stepneys out there. I have always been told that we, the African-American Stepneys, were once slaves on the England-based Stepney Railroad. I am beginning to do the research on the railroad. Any information will be helpful. I am really interested in the N. Carolina connection as my family is in Chicago. My great-grandfather was Charles Stepney.
