I have discovered a book on this family was written by John Echols Hansbarger, A history of Robert Sterrett & Isabella Dunlap, and his parents John Douglas Sterrett & Ann Reid in 1999. Only a small number of Libraries are shown to have the book via World Catalog. If someone knows of someone who has the book and is willing to loan it (with a bond guarantee for return), I would appreciate your contacting me. Thanks.

I have not been able to find out anything on John Sterrett's parents. His obit in the Kansas newspaper said very little, oddly it said he was a stonemason. He is not my direct line, it is his wife that I am related to. Their wedding is a most interesting mystery.

I recently bought a delightful small photo identified on the back as Ralph Sterrett. Ralph appears to be a middle aged gentleman wearing a bowler hat.

He may be Ralph Greene Sterrett b. 19 July 1879, the son of Samuel and Jemima Jane Sterrett. Ralph Greene Sterrett's WWI Draft Application puts him at age 39 in 1917-1918. He says he is a farmer. His wife is Sarah.

In the 1930 Census, Ralph is working as a foreman on a state highway project. They live in Decatur, Mifflin Cty, PA.

Please contact me if you have an interest in this photo.

Kathy@FamilyWeSearch.com

Sterrett-Bushman Cumberland Co. PA

I have had difficulty finding an ancestor, and perhaps someone here can help me.

I descend from Eli Bushman (b. 10/11/1812). He married someone named Sarah "Stebig" on 9/19/1848 in Lower Dickinson Twp, Cumberland Co. by by Rev. A.H. Kermer. I found this information at the Cumberland Co. Historical Society.

When I look for information for "Stebig," I get nowhere. I see a lot of Sterretts in that area, and am wondering if "Sarah Stebig" is acually "Sterrett." I have seen Sarah's last name in other sources as "Sterick," but when I research that surname, I hit another brick wall. Sarah was born around 1820. I don't know much more about her.

Any information or insight would be wonderful.

Update: John Douglass Sterrett b.1748.Ireland and Ann Reid b.1752.Ireland lived in Virginia

An update and expansion of the Message above. In the Braford Book Two mentioned above is a write-up on part of this family by John Douglas Sterrett (1823-1901), grandson of the John Douglas Sterrett b.1748 Co Donegal, Ireland written "as he received it from the lips of his grandmother, Ann Sterrett, his father, Robert Sterrett, his mother Isabella Sterrett and from other trustworthy sources." Obviously this was written before his death in 1901, but the Bibliography of the Book where the write-up was "typed from the handwriting" of John Douglas Sterrett says it was written cir.1861. If this is true it was likely written to record the family history on the eve of his entering Civil War conflict as or slightly after his enlistment in the Virginia 4th Infantry in 1861.
I have OCR’ed the original text, corrected it and it is now an 8 page .rft document which I will be glad to share with anyone that has a family interest.
Yes, Perry is my Great Grandfather as well. My father, F. Lyle (b.1920, Des Moines), who knew Perry until his death in 1939 (Des Moines), said that Perry marched with Gen. Sherman into Georgia--entered the infantry at age 17, was wounded by a sniper, and as a result walked with a cane the rest of his life. My Grandfather, Thomas "Ed" Sterrett (b. 1875 Deep River Iowa), was Perry's first born out of a family of 5 or 6. Perry was born in 1843, Cedar County Iowa. I've been able to trace the family back as far as Perry's father, William, who, with his mother, Mary, was one of the 1st white settlers in Cedar County Iowa. Mary was born in Massachusetts, 1770--the info stops here, with someone being born on ship during the crossing from Scotland.

If you want more info on Perry I have some Xerox copies from news article, as well as a partial news photo of Perry taken Memorial Day 1938.

Mark Sterrett (b.1952 Seattle Wa)

Hi Rhonda, thanks for your response, I asked my father if he remembered any of the relatives you listed, since he was born in What Cheer himself. Unfortunately my grandparents moved the family to Des Moines when he was only 5 years old (1925), so has no recollection. It is interesting, though, that your grandfather is from that same town. I would think What Cheer is a pretty small town, and relatives would talk. My father's older brother Howard Sterrett, b.1910, and sister, Dorothy b. 1915, were both born there as well, and I'll see if my aunt can remember anything--she lives in Marshalltown now, age 92. I'm putting together some photos my mother has of Perry, let me know if you're interested. My big question is if you have found out where William Sterrett's father was from, and dob. Let me know.

Thanks, Mark

Ok, my research has been confusing. There is a census (that I don't have in front of me) showing Norma's last name as Cook....which lists Norma and James and some of their children living with her parents for awhile...I don't know if the census taker couldn't spell Koch or if they went by Cook and Koch for some reason. I need to do more research on this. Norman's siblings were Vera, Ruth, Erma, Virginia, Eugene and Verna.

Ethel STERRETT d. Jan 1973 Middletown, Orange Co, New York

I have run face first into privacy laws on this one and I am hoping that there is a STERRETT researcher who can help me on this. I can not get a death certificate for Ethel STERRETT who died in 1973 because of them. I am attempting to find the full death date and the burial place of an aunt of my grandfather's but I need the DC to get that information.

There probably would not have been an obit since this aunt would have been a ward of the state and I doubt that the State of NY would go to the expense of writting and having published an obit for a ward for whom the state probably had no knowledge of any family in existance.

My grandfather had a severly retarded Aunt Ethel who functioned at the infant level. Because of social stigmas in the early half of the 1900's about mental retardation, no one in the family spoke of Ethel and few family members beyond her parents and siblings were even aware that she existed.

Ethel was cared for by her older sister Annie. Annie died in 1939 and I don't know if Ethel had already been institutionalized by an aging Annie or if Ethel became a ward of the state upon Annie's death and was institutionalized then. I don't know for certain that Ethel was in the Middletown State Mental Institution but the Middletown facility is the only one I know of in that part of NY so I am going on the assumption that Middletown is where she was put.

We know that Ethel is dead. Her birth year was 1887, so shecertainly has to be dead. The family was never notified of Ethel's death. I don't think the state knew there was any family for her.

I am trying to find Ethel's date of death and where she is buried. The last person who might have known anything about Ethel and possibly her death died 30 years ago so there is no one in the family to ask.

I have found an SSDI which might be my Ethel. There are inconsistancies with the data which could be explained by the fact that someone in the institution applying for the SSN on Ethel's behalf would not have first hand knowledge of her birth information or the correct spelling of the surname.

SSDI: Ethel Sterrett; 069-42-6563; Last Residence: 10940 Middletown, Orange, New York, United States of America;
Born: 31 Dec 1888; Died: Jan 1973
State (Year) SSN issued: New York (1966)

If this is my Ethel the correct birth would have been Sept 1887 and the surname SKERRITT. To eliminate this SSDI entry as a possibility for my Ethel SKERRITT I need to know if there was also an Ethel STERRETT living in the town of Middletown, NY where the state institution was located.

Does anyone know if there actually was an Ethel STERRETT living in the towm of Middletown, Orange Co, NY and this SSDI is for her?
