I wondered if we had corresponded but it's hard to keep track. I have not found anything about William Hawkins. His name is so common that when I find someone I can't confirm that it's him. You've added some information since we talked. Where is slocum cemetery? What county? I have been checking online databases to see what I can find. LDS has a project where they are digitizing all of their microfilm and they have several for Ohio. Do you have that link? If not, here it is:

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#c=1321...

Go to the blue link that says Search indexed Records, then Browse collections.

This site is such a treasure as it has international records. Some are actual records and some are awaiting indexing by volunteers. I volunteer to help with that in the hopes that I will also benefit.

About James Lewis--if you know that he was killed in a train accident, have you checked for coroner records?
I will continue to look and will keep your message in my files and maybe we can figure out the William Hawkins and James Lewis Stephens mysteries.

Becky,
thanks for responding! we have talked before. since this post i have found that james lewis is indeed a child of william and caroline. i believe he his buried near them in slocum cemetery. they have a marker, he doesn't. according to his wife's obit, she is buried there. i do not know why she would be there if he was not, as her family is not there. she died a lifetime after he did as he was crushed by a train before age 30 and she was an elderly lady at death. do you have any more info on caroline and charles' father william hawkins? thanks!

Thomas and Nancy also had a son, William C., b. 16 Dec, 1828 in Ohio City, WV, died 30 Mar 1894 in Scioto County. He married Caroline V. Hawkins (Hockins) b. 1829 in W. Virginia, on 30 Jan 1849, in Scioto.

I don't have information on your James Lewis.

Kinsmen? Joseph RYALL/ROYAL & Thomas STEVENS; Boston & Charlestown; 1695

Kinsmen? Joseph RYALL/ROYAL & Thomas STEVENS; Boston & Charlestown; 1695

According to The Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire, Thomas & Sarah (PLACE) STEVENS lived in Joseph ROYAL’s Charlestown house…

“One Thomas [STEVENS], shipwright, married in Boston 13 July 1695 Sarah PLACE (2), living in Joseph ROYAL's Charlestown house.”

We need to break down this statement from this secondary source and find the primary source(s) (or at least other secondary sources) by which we can confirm (or refute) each element. So far, only one element from the statement above has been confirmed with complete confidence; a Thomas STEVENS married a Sarah PLACE in Boston, per the following marriage record and a deed (image of original deed provided further below)…

“Thomas STEVENS & Sarah PLACE [married at Boston] July 13 1695”

http://books.google.com/books?id=V_IMAAAAYAAJ&pg=RA7-PA3...

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~streeter/stevens.pd...

Q. Who was the Joseph ROYAL who owned a house in Charlestown?

As the owner of multiple properties in Charlestown and Boston, the following Joseph ROYALL is the most likely match for the owner of the house reportedly occupied by Thomas & Sarah (PLACE) STEVENS…

“Joseph-2 ROYALL (Willam-1), if is age, entered on the Boston records at the time of his death, was correct, was born about 1645; sail-maker of Charlestown in 1673 or earlier; and later of Boston… He purchased in 1676-7, of John Drinker, an estate on Trumbull’s Lane, Charlestown, apparently his first real estate acquirement… He invested his money in mortgages of real estate in Boston, and it appears that the last years of his life were passed there. The Drinker estate in Charlestown he retained, and it remained in his possession until its sale to H. Davis in 1715.”

http://www.archive.org/stream/newenglandroyall00harr#page/n2... +

Q. Where was Trumbull’s Lane in Charlestown? Charlestown then included present-day Somerville and the northern part of Arlington.

However, it is possible that the following Joseph ROYALL also owned property in Charlestown that, as a mariner, he did not occupy full-time and/or that was vacant following his death…

“Joseph-3 ROYALL (Joseph-2, William-1) was born in Charlestown, 5 September 1673… Suffolk Probate furnishes the will of one Joseph of Boston, mariner… The will was made February 19, 1701, and proved June 29, 1702.”

http://www.archive.org/stream/newenglandroyall00harr#page/n4...

The following Joseph ROYALL was born too late to have owned the home reportedly occupied by Thomas & Sarah (PLACE) STEVENS who married in 1695…

“Joseph-3 ROYALL (Isaac-2, William-1) was born in Dorchester, 13 May, 1695…”

http://www.archive.org/stream/newenglandroyall00harr#page/n4...

Q. By what primary (or other secondary) source(s) can Thomas & Sarah (PLACE) STEVENS be identified as occupants of Joseph ROYAL’s Charlestown house? Did Thomas STEVENS reside there before, at, or after his marriage to Sarah PLACE on 13 July 1695? Could this reference pertain to another Thomas STEVENS who was *not* married to Sarah PLACE? There was another couple, Thomas & Sarah (--?--) STEVENS, whose son Thomas was born at Boston 31 December 1701 whereas Thomas, son of Thomas & Sarah (PLACE) STEVENS, was born at Boston 16 January 1696 and died 6 May 1751 “age 56 years”…

http://books.google.com/books?id=Nz4OAAAAIAAJ&pg=PA1706#...

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~streeter/stevens.pd...

Q. Were Thomas & Sarah (PLACE) STEVENS actually living with a Joseph ROYAL as close family members or were they renting the home of Joseph ROYAL as tenants while he resided elsewhere? Either scenario may suggest that Thomas STEVENS was not merely associated with Joseph ROYAL but that they were kinsmen. Of course, rent-free co-habitation by Thomas & Sarah (PLACE) STEVENS with Joseph ROYAL would provide much stronger evidence of kinship.

***** Other Points of Association Between the RYALL/ROYAL/ROYALL, STEVENS & PLACE Families *****

In reference to the children of William-1 RYALL/ROYAL/ROYALL, his possible daughter Margaret RYALL married an earlier Thomas STEVENS whose relationship to the Thomas STEVENS who married Sarah PLACE (if any) is unknown…

“vi (perhaps) Margaret; m. (1) Thomas WATKINS; m. (2) Thomas STEVENS [GDMNH 600, 659, 723]. (On 12 October 1674 "Thomas STEVENS of Kenebecke & Margaret his wife" sold to Henry Sayward and Bartholomew Gedney land "lying & being in Cascoe Bay, from the first falls above Mr. RYALL's house called Pumgustucke, alias Wescustogoe"; on 13 October 1674 STEVENS made a power of attorney to "my beloved friend William RYALL," addressing him as "Brother William RYALL" [ YLR 2:190]. This document allows of many interpretations, and the possibility that Margaret is a daughter of the immigrant would hold only if the William RYALL made attorney is the son of the immigrant rather than the immigrant himself.)”

Source = The Great Migration Begins Immigrants to New England 1620-1633, Volumes I-III

http://www.newenglandancestors.org/research/database/GreatMi...=

“One of the daughters of William[-2] ROYALL [(William-1)] married Amos STEVENS, mariner of Boston and North Yarmouth, the same man who 16 November, 1682, bought of John[-2] ROYALL [(William-1)] fifteen acres from the original grant of Gorges to the emigrant William[-1] ROYALL.”

http://www.archive.org/stream/newenglandroyall00harr#page/n1...

“Samuel-2 ROYALL (William-1), his relationship with the emigrant [William-1] being amply established by the remarkable conveyance on file in Suffolk Deeds, v. 484, first appears as a resident of Boston with his wife Sarah in 1663, a cooper by occupation… March 18, 1665-6, Samuel COLE of Boston, a “comfitmaker,” and Anna, his then wife, for the love and affecting they bore towards Samuel ROYALL, son of William ROYALL, of Casco Bay, who married Phebe Green, the daughter of Margaret, former wife to the same Samuel COLE, in consideration of a promise to the said Margaret in her life time, conveyed to the said Samuel ROYALL certain land in Boston… The property was bounded with the street south-east 44 ft., Peter PLACE [paternal grandfather of Sarah (PLACE) STEVENS] south-west there six score and sixteen ft., being the length of said land… Possession was given Mar. 21 of the same year.”

http://www.archive.org/stream/newenglandroyall00harr#page/n2... +

http://books.google.com/books?id=7Z8FAAAAMAAJ&v&pg=P...

We are left with the following questions of great importance…

Q. By what primary (or other secondary) source(s) can the Thomas STEVENS who married Sarah PLACE be identified as a shipwright? Per a deed executed by his surviving children, the Thomas STEVENS who married Sarah PLACE was a joiner. To access images of the original deed, please click on…

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~streeter/stevens/

To access a full transcript of the original deed (and more information on this family), please click on…

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~streeter/stevens.pd...

Of course, the occupations of shipwright (a carpenter skilled in ship construction and repair) and joiner (a person whose occupation is to construct articles by joining pieces of wood) are not so different that the same Thomas STEVENS could have worked in both capacities.

Thanks for your help!

Perry
Thomas & Sarah (PLACE) STEVENS were married in Boston in 1695. Recent research has identified several heretofore unknown children of Thomas & Sarah (PLACE) STEVENS and renewed interest in discovering their ancestry. The 10 known children of Thomas & Sarah (PLACE) STEVENS were:

1.	Place STEVENS m. Boston 1726 SUSANNA PETTEL/PETTELL
2.	Thomas STEVENS m. Boston 1729 ELIZABETH MARTIN
3.	Sarah STEVENS m. Scituate, MA 1721 Isaac HATCH Jr. of Scituate, MA
4.	Mary STEVENs m. Boston 1724 Philip AUBIN/OBBIN/OBBINE
5.
Thomas & Sarah (PLACE) STEVENS (m. Boston 1695)

Thomas & Sarah (PLACE) STEVENS (m. Boston 1695)

Recent research has identified several heretofore unknown children of Thomas & Sarah (PLACE) STEVENS and renewed interest in discovering the true ancestry of Thomas STEVENS. All indications are that he somehow descended from Thomas STEVENS of Landrake, Cornwall, England whose sons William and Benjamin were early settlers of Maine. DNA testing would potentially enable us to confirm (or refute) this hypothesis. Sandra Stevens has graciously offered to pay for any male direct-line STEVENS descendant of Thomas STEVENS to participate in this STEVENS DNA project.

Because the y-Chromosome upon which all surname-based DNA projects are based is only passed from fathers to sons, only male direct-line descendants of Thomas STEVENS have the appropriate DNA for test participation. Descendants of Thomas & Sarah (PLACE) STEVENS who do not meet these criteria can help by identify descendants who do. For more information on this family, please see…

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~streeter/stevens.pd...

If you, or someone you know, may be eligible to participate, please contact me privately, with no further obligation.

Thanks for your help!

Perry
With many thanks to Erin Kelley who responded to my look-up request at the Norfolk County, Massachusetts message board at RootsWeb.com, I am pleased to report that Suffolk County, Massachusetts Deed 53:41 clearly identifies several children of Thomas & Sarah (PLACE) STEVENS of Boston, some of which have not been recognized as such before. This incredible deed also identifies Sarah as the daughter of John PLACE. At the point in time at which the deed was written, the children of Thomas & Sarah (PLACE) STEVENS included:

Sarah (STEVENS) HATCH, wife of Isaac HATCH of Hanover, MA
Jane (STEVENS) DYER, wife of Joseph DYER of Weymouth, MA
Benjamin STEVENS
Mary (STEVENS) AUBIN, widow (probably of Philip AUBIN) of Boston
Hannah STEVENS
Margery (STEVENS) ROGERS, wife of Jonathan ROGERS of Newbury, MA

To read the deed for yourself, please click on the following link:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~streeter/s...

To read my work-in-progress on this family, please click on the following link:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~streeter/s...

Further additions and corrections will be greatly appreciated!

Perry

STEVENS of Williamson County, Tennessee (descendants of William Stevens)

The estate of William Stevens, Sr. is found in Williamson County, TN in 1815, leaving a widow, (she was the former Lovey (Davis) Page, widow of John Page who died in 1808 in Williamson County), and 15 children. William Stevens, Sr. was originally from North Carolina, and resided along the Duplin County and Sampson County line.
All of William, Sr's children came to TN, and of the fifteen children several lived out their lives in Williamson and Maury County, Tennessee: Joel Stevens, Henry Stevens, Tabitha Riggins, Charles Stevens, Edward Stevens and John Stevens.
Two of the sons married sisters, who were daughters of John and Lovey (Davis) Page, creating more connections (if not confusion) between Stevens and Page.
I am compiling a history and genealogy of this family (2009).
bradley . jeffreys @ gmail . com
