Need ancestry of Ruth Stevens, born ca. 1758 prob. in Connecticut (or Mass.), died 2 Apr. 1842 in Colebrook, Conn., married Daniel Canfield May 1785 prob. Winchester Dist., Litchfield Co., Conn. Rose Canfield Genealogical Collection, FHL film #945,934 says she may be related to Simeon Stevens but no reason or source records or location known for him to confirm any connection. Was Ruth married before she married Daniel - it is known she was Daniel's second wife. His 1st wife died in 1784 so he didn't wait too long to get married again.

Also, I would be happy to hear from anyone who is descended from this couple.

Guardianship - children of James Stevens d.1744 Caroline Co, VA

I am looking to prove the children of James Stevens who died between 18 March 1744 and 12 April 1744 in Caroline Co, VA. The children are, supposedly, Elizabeth, Mary, Anne, James and John. I am descended from Elizabeth.
Several family trees on rootsweb and elsewhere state that Owen Thomas was the children's guardian. One even gives a date of 16 Nov 1744, when Mary and Elizabeth chose their guardian. I have reviewed the microfilm records for the Caroline County Court Orders all around this date, and there is no such guardianship there.
Does any have a copy of the guardianship papers or court records, or know where they can be found?
Also, can anyone explain to me why Elizabeth, who was (it is said) married when her father died, need a guardian?
Thanks for any insights anyone can give.
Sandy Wincek

Parents of Marietta Stevens

I am searching for information regarding my great, great grandmother Marietta Stevens' parents.

Marietta(Lillie?)Stevens was born in about 1860 in Massachusettes. She was the wife of Emerson Woodworth Lyon (1850-?) who was the son of Elisha Lyon (1810-1882) and Delosha Bosworth (1815-1906) both from Connecticut.

Marietta had atleast one child, the one, my great grandmother Daisy Lyon who was born in Massachusettes on 7 aug 1891 and was married to Fay Marvin (1890-1970) of Randall, NY. The couple later resided in Syracuse, NY.

As for Marietta's parents, my only possible leads are a couple from Hyde Park, Norfolk, Massachusetts in the 1880 U.S. Census by the names of J.M. Stevens (father) and C.C. Stevens(mother), they were 63 and 55, respectively, in 1880 with three children listed:

M.Lillie Stevens-age:20
Ralph A. Stens-age:14
Nellie E. Stevena-age:11

Any information on J.M. and C.C. Stevens, if they are indeed my 3x great grandparents would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Is Benevolent Stevens of Dryden a relative?

We do not know of a connection between the Rose & Stevens families but do have a puzzle. It's solution could, hopefully, lead to other family members.

Abraham & Phebe Rose of Dryden, NY named a son Benevolent S. Rose, born circa 1840. His headstone at Old Pioneer Cemetery in Dryden, NY is broken and parts are missing but earlier transcriptions include Benevolent or Bemvalent. The middle initial is undisputed. Each is a rare name and only one other family in the area used anything close to either- the Stevens.

He was their seventh child but only their third son. The first two sons had already died, making this naming appear to be a significant choice. He did not survive past one year so no descendants or subsequent census returns can provide information.

Phebe's maiden name was spelled differently on each source found- Houk/ Houck/ Hough and both Abraham & Phebe were born in NJ, as opposed to Benevolent Stevens & his wife, who hailed from New England.

Since they form our most enduring 'brick wall', any info that could solve this puzzle would be useful and most welcome.

Cely Stevens,1850,Mississippi,

I have been researching my Paternal Great-GreatGrandMother, Cely Stevens, name listed on the 1867 marriage license in Gonzales County, Texas. Cely was listed on the 1870 Census with the State of Mississippi, as her birth state. She married a Mr. Andrew Desmuke (also born in MS) and they married in the State of Texas. She has been listed with various spellings of her name since the initial find of her, the spellings, have been Cely, Celia, Celie, Sealy, Seeley, Seely, and Zellia(this one is on the 1930 Census in Gonzales County, Texas with her four Desmuke Grandchildren and she was listed at 89 years of age). I would like to learn of her Family Lineage as well as that of Andrew Desmuke, who was forty years old in 1870, where they both were born in the State of Mississippi, and I am told that Cely lived to be 105 years old, but I can not find her death certificate or burial information.

William Stevens (b.abt 1790) of Surrey

Can anyone please help with a LOOKUP for this individual in the Surrey Parish of Witley.

Unfortunately he died in Godalming in 1839... If he had lived just a little longer his place of birth would have been officially recorded by the first Census in 1841. We know he was buried in the Churchyard of St Peter and St Paul, on the 26th July 1839 age abt 49 years. Here the Vicar of Godalming wrote “of Brook, Witley” into the burial record adjacent to his name.
We really need confirmation of whether he is listed in the Witley Parish register of births around 1790 and the names of his parents... we are at a complete block and will welcome any assistance. See our tree at http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/pt/person.aspx?tid=829646&pi...

Stevens Family

Maybe another set of eyes can find it im looking for Alice Stevens in the 1900 either Canada or US. She was Born in Quebec Canada in 1856. IN the 1900 she should have 2 children and not be married (Widowed) Names are Etta Mae Stevens b. 1881 Iowa and Harry Stevens b 1883 Not sure where. I can find her in 1880 censes in Iowa and 1910 in Sutton Nebraska as a Kelly she didnt marry into the Kelly's until 1905. Her Husband Albert Stevens Died in 1886 In Hennepin Minnesota. Reason this is important is there has always been this question in our family of where Etta and Alice where between 1881 and 1909. Etta married in 1902 but her husband was shot in 1909. so i know that part then she disapears again. Hopefully someone can help any questions feel free to ask thanks

Thomas died prior to the move to tx, so he may be buried in Bahalia.I believe he had the following sib. Sophie1805,Lousia1808,augustus?1810,and Emily.their Parents were John Henry Stevens and Elizabeth allen. If any of these names sound famil. Please email me. amanda

I am hitting a brick wall, as seems like so many researching a STEVENS line do.
I can come forward, but not back. Any help if you know this line of STEVENS please.
Charles Ernest Stevens 1917 - 1986 born Red River County Tx
Mother: Martha Emma McDougle Born mississippi 1897
Father: Charles Oliver Stevens Born Ok c.1890
Grandfather: John Stevens South Carolina
Grandmother: Rose or Rosa unknown
I know it is not a lot of information, but it is all I can find. My Father (Charles E,Stevens) didn't even know this much.
Somewhere in the past for Charles Oliver's Mother (Rose) she was married to a Denny. Divorced when still Pregnate with Charles Oliver and Married John Stevens.
Gets confusing. So Really My line would be the Denny's but have only known Stevens all my life. Any way, would sure like to hear from someone who might have a connection and more information on this family.

I am looking for information on my grandmother that lived in Carter County Kentucky and her name is Minnie Stephens(Stevens). She was married to Reverend Chester Arthur Shelton that lived in Carter County Kentucky for many years. He passed away in about 1971 in a Nursing home in Hendersville North Carolina. My mother was Ines Shelton Maddox and she had three brothers and they were Chester Shelton from Columbus Ohio and Roy Shelton from Cincinnati Ohio and Reverend Raymond Shelton from High Point North Carolina. I am trying to find any information about the shelton family and especially my grandmother because I have never seen a photo of my grandmother and my mother never had one because it got destroyed in a fire.

I would appreciate any help in this matter...
Jerry maddox
