1900's Stice in Arkansas

I am looking for information on my Great Grandfather b1885 as John A Stice. Family legend has his father (unknown) being killed in around 1890-91 by a posse at a train station in Arkansas. He was then taken in by a faily named Miller, and took there name to become John A Miller. He married Beattrice (Gibson)Gipson in 1910. Does anyone have information that may match this family legend? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Tim, my dad was William Elzie Stice. He was also the son of Theodora and Artie. Grandmother Artie's full name was Artie Rosetta Prater. She had two brothers who I heard my dad talk about ( she may have had other sibilings I just never knew about). I believe one was named Ed Prater and the other who I actually knew and visted many times was referred to as Uncle Ollie Prater. His actual name was probably Oliver but I can't be sure of that. Uncle Ollie's wife was named Elvie and they had two daughters. The older one was about my age and was named Beth. I don't remember the other one's name. They lived near Hoxie, Arkansas. My dad's sister Gertie also married a Hale. She had three sons, Theodore, George, and Melvin and two daughters Sally and Rosetta (named after grandmother Artie). Aunt Gertie died a year or two ago and my dad died in March. In total my dad had three brothers and three sisters and one half brother. Aunt Ivie, Aunt Gertie, Uncle Finis (not sure about the spelling of Uncle Dig's name since we just knew of him as Dig), my dad who was William Elzie but was know as "Haut", Uncle Chester who was know as Uncle "Tot", Uncle CD, and Aunt Marie. The only surviving are Aunt Marie who lives near Truman, Arkansas, and Uncle CD ( I think Uncle CD's name is Charles based on birth records but he says not) who lives in Marion, Arkansas. The half brother was Ramond Callahan who was Grandmother Artie's son by her first husband. Uncle Raymond lived in New Buffalo, Michigan until he died in the 1970's.

I have also gotten a lot a information about Grandfather Theodora's other brothers who were Charles, Vess, and Ed (probably Edward) from Gwen Stice who is related to Charles. She sent me to this very web site for most of the information.

I'll be glad to share any other family information I have.

My father, William Thedore Daily Hale, is the son of Iva Bell Stice (daughter of Theodora "Dora" Stice and Artie R (last name unknown to my father) and Clarence D. Hale. My father was born 27 Feb. 1932 in Alto Settlement, Marked Tree, Poinsett Co. Ark.

Daddy often talked about Uncle "Dig" when I was growing up.

I have also heard him mention Brinkley and Lepanto, Ark.

I have been stuck trying to get past Dora and Artie for a number of years. You may have just helped me get past them.

What other info do you have?

Thanks for the reply. I was surprised to see it pop up in my email!

Regards,
Tim

Finis Edward Stice was my uncle, (my father's brother). His father was Theodora Ingersall Stice and his mother was Artie Rosetta Prater Stice. Uncle "Dig" as he was known was born in Rivervale, Arkansas and died in Brinkley, Arkansas. My grandfather "Dory" as he was referred to is also buried in the same cemetery as Uncle Dig in Brinkley, Arkansas. Grandmother Artie is buried in the cemetery in Lepanto, Arkansas.

Malinda Stice m. Ezekiel Phelps

I don't think the info listed on the Stice family web site is correct - Malinda Stice m. Ezekiel Phelps Ralls, Co. Mo in 1827 is not the Malinda Stice buried in Washougal Co. cemetary. Malinda Phelps Stice buried there is Peter J. Stice's second wife. I believe that this Malinda is Ezekiel's sister, but is only a theory. Any thoughts or comments would be welcome!

Stice family tree:
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~stice/mrk/aqwg01.htm
Washougal cemetery WA:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~waclacem/WashougalMemorial...

Lisa, I don't know if you are the person responsible for the Charles Carl Stice Steiss page, but in the Sixth Generation, there are some errors.

My husband is David E. Willcox, grandson of Jessie Elbert Willcox and Theola Elma Stice. Jessie and Theola were married 2/8/1916. They had, as shown on the Stice page, 4 children, three daughters and a son.

Jessie died on July 23, 1926, not 1929. He is buried in Marrs Hill Cemetary in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. There is a web listing of all the graves in the cemetary. Also, he was born in

After Jessie died, Theola remarried. She married Sim Eugene Bugg. They moved to California and left the 4 children with Jessie's parents. The 3 daughters were eventually moved to California to live with Theola and Sim. Zander, the son of Jessie and Theola, was left with his paternal grandparents--he was my husband's father.

Theola died June 20, 1968, and is buried in Merced, California.

We have a little more information on this branch of the family if anyone is interested (we inherited a family bible).

Patsy Willcox

The story you told about Elizabeth Stice rang a bell, and sure enough, she's listed in the large database on "Stice Web" (see link below). Here's what it says about her...

Elizabeth STICE was born 12 May 1849 in , Monroe, Iowa. She died before 1912.

CENSUS:
age 1 1850 census home 476 family 476 Monroe Co. Iowa p. 334A
name given as Elizabeth Stise
age 11 1860 census home 183 family 177 Vancouver, Clark, Washington p. 100
Name given as Elizabeth Stice.

BIRTHPLACE: stated in 1850 census as Iowa

RESEARCH NOTE: the research and records of Francis Tregaskis states that
Elizabeth was married to a second husband named GRANT.
Documentation from Debra Zook states that there was a letter written by John Edward Stice, son of Peter J. Stice, grandson of Peter Stice which states that Elizabeth weighed 600 pounds by age 16, married Dave Parker, has one son, left them and went with Barnum and Baily Circus for 22 years, traveling under the name of Grant. Eventually weighed 722 pounds.

Elizabeth married David PARKER. David was born about 1845.

Information from Ancestral File.

P.S. - I wonder if Barnum & Bailey Circus has archival records of their performers?
this could just be an interesting coincidence, but... I'm looking for info on Ida Mae Stice. I believe from KY. However, she married George Pratt in Topeka KS some time prior to 1914 (not her 1st or last marriage). She died in CA I think in the late 1960s to early 1970s. Her last name then was Kyte.
I know she had several children, Clifford, Frankie, Andrew (my grandfather) and at least 1 other girl who's name I can't recall at present. If you think there might be a connection please let me know & I'll check more w/grandpa.Or if you've come across anything else regarding Ida Stice, I'd love to have more info on her. thanks!

Oh, boy! Now you've opened a can of worms! I say that because Peter married twice and had, essentially, two families, one in Missouri and one in Washington State. Since I live in Washington, I originally thought we must be descended from him (turns out not so, though). And he had a lot of kids, so keeping track of who was where and who is descended from which part of the family was quite bewildering at times.

Anyway, here's what is on the "Stice Web" at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~stice/

Peter J.

Hi,
I may have responded to your post already, sorry for the repeat if i have. Our lines both go back to Charles Carl. There is a great web site devoted to the Stice family at www.homepages.rootsweb.com/~stice/. I think that's right. Mr. Kitchen has collected thousands of Stice names and info. I have found quite a lot there including the info that directed me back to Charles. Email me if I can help in any way. gloslater@msn.com.
regards,
Gloria

Birthplace of Carl Steiss?

I am really stuck. There appears to be no information on where Carl Steiss might have been born beyond the Alsace-Lorraine information. Further, he apparently wrote his own name as "Stys." I'm wondering if his actual name had a different spelling since the ship's reference was written by a clerk and not by his own signature. I am currently living in southwestern Germany and would like to do some legwork if I can find out more precisely where Carl (Charles? Karl?) Steiss (Stys?Steis?) might have been born. Does anyone have any leads?
