Help w/ Adoption Records

Hello,
I'm trying to find out more information about my great-grandmother's family. Her name was Eleanor(McCormick)McMahon. I know that she and her sister Mabel were orphaned sometime around 1900 - 1910. They were sent to the New York Foundlings. The story is though that their names were changed after their father left and their mother died. However, they weren't even sure what their real legal names were. Both were eventually adopted by extended family members, but for some reason relatives were tight lipped about their real parents.

The New York Foundlings are still around, but have not been helpful at all w/ information. Can anyone help point me in another direction to obtain adoption records?

Is there anyone out there who has info on my great-grandmother or her sister? Both were born and raised in Brooklyn, NY.

Mabel(McCormick)Perkins was also a actress/dancer who went under the stage name Zane Gray. She died sometime around 1930.

I am the grand daughter of Phoebe Florence Stillman. Some of her siblings are Ruby, Clearance, etc... I am upset because the information about my grandmother is wrong. Like the year of her death, place, etc... I should know I live in the same city with her when she died. I don't know who posted the information but their facts are way off. I know that I am a part of the George Stillman lineage. I do not know how to correct my grandmother information. I see they listed my mother who is her daughter but did not go any further other then my mothers name. No other information about her at all, including her children which of course I am her daughter.

Charles John Stillman, Jr.
b. 6 Sep 1947-Emmetsburg, Iowa
d. 30 Mar 2008-Algona, Iowa

Charles (Chuck) Stillman was born on September 6, 1947 to Charles J. and Maureen (Murphy) Stillman in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Chuck attended kindergarten year of school at a Vernon Township country school. The following year he began first grade at Emmetsburg Public School and graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1965. The following fall, Chuck enrolled at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1969. In 1976 he was awarded a Master of Science degree in Education from Creighton. Following his graduation in 1969, Chuck accepted a position as a seventh and eighth grade teacher at St. Bridget School in Omaha. Chuck taught there until 1975, taking one year off for duty with the National Nebraska Guard. In the fall of 1975, Church began teaching at Blessed Sacrament School in North Omaha. Chuck moved to Algona in 1980, and for the past twenty-seven years he has taught in the Bishop Garrigan Catholic School System. Chuck always said that his move to Algona was for one year only, but he was quick to reply that Garrigan students, teachers, and parents were just too good to him. He could not leave. Chuck was a storyteller. He loved the art of storytelling, and for a long time was a member of the National Storytelling Association. Chuck used storytelling in his classroom, and shared his tales with groups throughout the state. Chuck was also a longtime member of the International Reading Association, the Iowa Reading Association, and the PACK/LARC Reading Council of North Iowa. Chuck also dearly loved history in the classroom, and for more than twenty years helped Seton students prepare for the local, district, and state History Day competitions. On five occasions, students that Chuck worked with qualified for the National History Day finals in Maryland. Chuck was on several occasions recognized for his achievements in the field of education. Former students nominated Chuck for inclusion in Who’s Who in American Teachers a number of times. Chuck was named an Outstanding Young Teacher of Omaha by the Omaha JaCees in 1975. Chuck was a past finalist for the Iowa Reading Teacher of the Year Award. In 2001 the Iowa Historical society and the National History Day in Iowa named Chuck the Teacher of the Year. On Sunday, March 30, 2008, Chuck passed away at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona after a courageous battle with cancer. Chuck is survived by his father, Charles, of Emmetsburg. Six brothers and sisters survive including: Rose and Bob Campney of Omaha, Jerry and Alice Stillman of Graettinger, Tom and Lois Stillman, Joanne and Dave Garrelts, all of Emmetsburg, Karen and Duane McGregor of Algona and Rich and Pam Stillman of Emmetsburg. Chuck is also survived by seventeen nieces and nephews, a step-brother, John and wife, Linda Higgins, a step-sister Joan and husband Gary Beckman, and their children. In addition, he leaves behind many friends, students, former students, and special friends, Barb Beatty and the concession stand friends. Preceding Chuck in death are his mother, Maureen; stepmother, Jeanne; his grandparents and man other relatives.
Service: 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 3, 2008 at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, Algona, Iowa.
Burial is in St. John's Cemetery, Emmetsburg, Iowa.

Stilman / Stillmam family were colonists at the Lost colony. Are you descended from them?

First the Lost colony project is a non profit organization.

Hello,

For those of you who don't know about the mystery of the Lost Colony, here's a primer. In 1587, Sir Walter Raleigh financed a venture in which 116 men, women and children were planning to establish the first permanent colony in the New World. Their goal was to raise tobacco and other supplies that colonists were unable to obtain in England, and to search for precious minerals, like gold.

In the fall of 1587, the colonists finally arrived on Roanoke Island in present day North Carolina, after a very difficult journey in which their food supplies were ruined. They sent John White, whom they had elected governor, back to England to obtain food and supplies and expected his return in the spring of 1588. However, the Spanish attached England and England, having no Navy, impressed all of her fishing vessels and private merchant ships into Naval service. Finally, in 1590, three years after
leaving the colonists which included his daughter, son-in-law and infant granddaughter, he returned to Roanoke Island to find it deserted, but not destroyed. It appeared as if the colonists had simply moved. A single word, a clue, Croatan, was carved on a tree. The Croatan were the friendly Indians living nearby. Before John's departure, he had instructed the colonists to carve crosses if they had to leave in distress. There were no crosses.

John White would spend the rest of his life searching for the Lost Colonists. Many hints and clues indicate that at least some of the Colonists survived and were assimilated into the native tribes. The
question is, did they, and if so, who are they today?

In 1993, the original site of the Croatan village was located. Subsequent archaeological and genealogical research suggests that the colonists did survive, and that when the land was granted to settlers, it was granted to some of those survivors who were by that time considered to be Indians. With recent advances in DNA for genealogy, we finally have, today, the ability to solve the mystery. We have created a plan that combines history, genealogy and DNA to solve the mystery. However, we can't do this alone. We need the help of the families who have been identified as "families of interest", being either roster members of the Lost Colony of those who obtained land grants on the original Croatan village site. Many of those names are the same.

In order to educate people and work closely with people who are interested, we are sponsoring the Lost Colony Symposium for DNA and Recent Research Sept. 7-9, 2007 at the Lost Colony Center in Williamston, NC. The symposium will be held between the Center and the Holiday Inn, as noted on the flyer at the website

Given that your surname is one of those on our "Names of Interest" list, I hope that people on the list will join with us in our research. I am hoping from this mailing, aside from encouraging people to attend the Symposium, to achieve the following:

1. To identify a primary research person or persons for your particular
surname who would serve as a contact/coordinator for future postings,
requests and research.
2. To identify a family archival website(s) if one exists.
3. To identify if there are any families of that surname that are from NC
(or early coastal SC or VA), have oral histories of Indian or "mixed"
heritage, are involved with any of the tri-racial isolate groups
(Melungeons, Red Bones, etc.) and/or have any oral history of the Lost
Colonies.
4. To determine if the family group is involved already with DNA testing,
and if so, who coordinates that effort.
5. To determine if there is any research occurring or that has occurred for
your surname in Great Britain, and if not, if anyone is interested in
pursuing that avenue.

To become involved with the Lost Colony project, or to support the project, please attend our Symposium. Our project plan will be announced at the Symposium, and we have a long list of wonderfully educational speakers. The
flyer is attached. Bring your pedigree charts and your genealogy as the right people will be present to help you with your testing plan.

If you can't attend the conference, you can still join the project.

Information will be posted shortly about how to do that on the Lost Colony website. We are in the process of setting us a private newsgroup for project members only which will also be available after the symposium.
Furthermore a blog has been created. http://www.the-lost-colony.blogspot.com/

If you are interested in this project or can be of help in any way, please contact me at restes@comcast.net.

The surnames are on our blog: http://www.the-lost-colony.blogspot.com/
Lost Colony website: http://lost-colony.com/home.html

Roberta Estes

"I will be on vacation from now until July 24th, and I will have very little access to e-mail. Please e-mail questions about the Symposium or the project to either my volunteer assistant, Nelda Percival at nelda_percival@hotmail.com or Anne Pool, the Center's Educational Director at croatan@peoplepc.com. They will answer any immediate questions about the Symposium and you will be put on an interest list."
Obit. Eve Stillman

Eve Stillman, a retired lingerie designer who also owned and led the lingerie company that bore her name, died Feb. 21 at her home in Palm Beach, Fla. She was 97. In the 1940s when Gracette Lingerie, a company founded by her husband, Harry Stillman, encountered financial problems, she intervened and helped shift the company to higher-priced products. In 1956 she changed the company ' s name to Eve Stillman, and later it became Eve Stillman Inc. Its products included hand-embroidered nightgowns, and it had particular success with horsehair petticoats for the full-skirted fashions of the 1950s. In 1981, Mrs. Stillman received a Femmy award from the Intimate Apparel Industry, a trade group for lingerie makers. When she retired in 1989 most of the assets of her company were sold and became a division of Kefco Industries. She was born in Upper Manhattan and attended Hunter College. Her husband died in 1979 after 44 years of marriage. She is survived by her twin sister, Bertha Freeman of Miami; brother, David Feinberg of West Palm Beach, Fla.; daughter, Frances Linderman of Trinidad, Calif.; and two grandchildren. Published in the San Diego Union-Tribune on 3/9/2003. (volunteer submission)

Greetings, I am looking for family information regarding my grandfather Earl Mason Stillman. He was born in the late 1800's in Albion, New York. To my knowledge he had one sister who went by the name of Daisy. Earl married Elizabeth Heintz and they had two daughters Betty and Joyce. If anyone has any more information for me I would greatly appreciate it.

Starting a family tree, and I want to see if you can help:

My deceased mother, Betty Stillman, was one of six kids (she, Dave, Jake, Max, unknown, and unknown) who had a bakery in Wilmington, DE. Betty was born in Woodbine, NJ, and she moved to Philadelphia. Some of her brothers (my uncles) moved to Phila as well. I'm current about the offspring from these brothers, but I'm not clear on below.

I'm wondering if Betty's parents had relatives that either came with them from Odessa, Russia (probably 1900-1915)or who came later or who never came.

Any information you can provide?

With great care and difficulty, my son and I have traced my father's ancestors back to Daniel Stil(l)man who is recorded as being married on 9/15/1761 to Rachel Lurvey. Their son, Peter is the one we "hail" from.
If you can give us any info about Daniel(where he came from, etc.) we would be very grateful.

Deliverance Blinn

Deliverance Blinn; 1688-1736, son of Peter and Mary; married Mary Stillman;1689-1735, daughter of George Stillman and Rebecca Smith; in 1713. Her sister; Elizabeth Stillman, 1700-1735; married William Blinn; 1701-1740, son of Peter and Johanna; in 1722. Does anyone know the relationship between Deliverance and William Blinn? (or if the information I just listed is correct) I don't think they are brothers, possibly half or nephew. My ancestors are William Elizabeth. Thank you, Jef Blynn
