I have to make a correction concerning the civil war gravestones. I know there are military gravestones but I can't be certain they are civil war. I was 16 the last time my grandfather took me to it. My father told me that William Stills moved from Virginia after the civil war. I can't be sure of that either. My grandfather told me that William had 19 children by several different wives that he had over time. He also told me that William fell from a horse when he was in his nineties and died. He was healthy and fit otherwise. Thanks

I am the great great grandson of William Henry Stills and Nancy Tarlton Stills. John Wesley Stills was my great grandfather. Chrales W. Stills SR. was my grandfather and Charles W. Stills Jr. was my father. My name is Charles Ivan Stills. Unfortunately I can't answer your questions about Smith Alexander Stills. I do know some history concerning William Stills. I do know of a Stills family graveyard with several civil war gravestones that is located in a local pastor field at the foot of the mountains here in Greene Co. It is near the original home place. The home of John Wesley Stills still survives to this day and is still in the family and kept up. The stills family lived in a community called 'Whitesands'. I live not far from it myself. I could probably contact some of my relatives and find out for sure if he was adopted. My great aunt is still alive. She is the only one still alive out of my grandfathers 9 siblings. I wonder if you ever finished your research. I am back at it again because of some interesting stories which have come to light about my grandfather - Frank Stills. My dad was the youngest child of the marriage between Frank and Emma (Nillson) Anderson. The Alvin you mentioned is my dad's older brother and he is still alive and lives in Colorado Springs, CO. I understand Frank left Colorado and went to California where he was killed - he is buried in Inglewood or in Riverside.

I don't know if there is a tie to them or not. I can't find anything on him until he married in Feb 1880. I can't find him anywhere befroe then. If he is the Houston Stills in the other census with the wife and children they were not his, he wasn't old enough. So I'm at a brick wall with him unless someone can help me.
William Houston Stills had 11 children, one was a son named Shelie Brewster Hubert Stills b. 4-16-1893 in Cannon Co. TN and d. 11-29-1976 in Tippah Co. MS. He was my husbands Grandfather.
What are the names of the Stills that you are looking for. If I had some names maybe I could help you.

Do you have any ties to the Logan Co./Franklin Co.- Arkansas/Tennessee Stiles?

I have heard too about Indian, (perhaps Cherokee) somewhere in the bloodline, but no proof.

Need info on William Houston STILLS b. 1845-48 d. 1938 Gibson Co. TN. He married Mary Jane BOGLE Feb.1880 in Cannon Co. TN. They had 11 children with 7 living in 1910. Death. Cer. list parents as Robert Stills & Mary ? all b. in TN. Don't know for sure if they were all b. in TN or not. William may have been married before Mary Jane, if so want to know what happened to them !!! Found a Houston Stills with wife Eliza and 3 children in 1879 Cannon Co. but can't find them after that. Was told to children there was Indian in the line. Would also like to know more about the Cherokee Stills. Thanks....

THE INFORMATION REGARDING WM STILL AND LOWAYS WAS THAT RUFUS THE FATHER RESIDED IN ZENIA, OHIO. WILLIAM DIED IN PORTSMOUTH,VIRGINIA DEC.25, 1984. Loretta was born 1-3-1864 in Jasper Co., Iowa. Their offspring were:
Cora Mae born in 1885, Frank T born 1887 (this would be my
grandfather - who I never met), Elizabeth Almeda born in 1889, Sarah Arminta
born in 1890, Charles Weaver born 1892, Josie Melvina born 1896, and
Maggie Janette born 1898. Edward Stills died
7-25-01 Esbon, Kansas and Loretta died 10-30-1925 and
is buried At Fairmount Cemetary in Denver.

Do you have a Sarah "Sallie" Stills in your files who was born between 1850 and 1860, place unknown? Married a Brown, a Turner, and lastly, Joel Newton Reeves. They lived in Searcy, AR, she prob. died there after 1905.

Grandfather was Lawrence Stills from Greene County, Tennessee, he was married to Helen (don't know maiden name). His mother was Ida (Cox) Stills. His father Ervin Stills. Helen died giving childbirth to Eugene Stills. Lawrence later married Nora EttaBelle Mcinturff. Do not know what happened to Eugene Stills, Lawrence died at age 21.
