Looking for relatives from Old Town, Maine. My father's name was Francis. His siblings names are Antonette, Bernice, Charles, Odella, Ella, Cathlene, Madeline. We had a small reunion this summer and I am wondering where the children of these siblings are. These would be my first cousins who I have never met. I am very interested in learning of their whereabouts.

I have done some extensive research on the St. Louis family.

Alexander Joseph and Rose Proulx are known to have 23 children. I have a list of the first 14 from an old family record. If this is of any interest to you, contact me at joanna.nickel@gmail.com

Hi Dorothy
Your message is a little old, hope this still gets to you.
I am attempting to trace the NNY St. Louis family for my grandaughter. I have them back to Glengarry, Ont in 1881, but not sure past that.
Best info I have is Alexander Joseph St.Louis, b. 1876 Charlotteburg (or is it Charlottenburg?)m. 11 Jul 1897, Rose Proulx, b. abt 1881.
Son, Joseph Alexander St.Louis, b 22 Apr 1901, immigrated to NY.
I have found Paul & Mary St.Louis as the parents of Alexander Joseph, based on 1901 census. 1881 census confirmed that they had a son Alexander.
Any connection to you US St.Louis'?

I did not find your Eli in any books of Quebec.
Here is what i know about Eli so far.
He is supposed to have been born 18 april 1823, i do not know where and died 1904 in Ontario.
He married 1st time to his first wife about 1843-1857 with whom he had at least 3 children.
Julie born 22 sep. 1858 in Ontario married to Jos. Peter Houle.
Angeline born about 1859 in Ontario married to Charles Allard in 1877.
Joseph born 25 march 1861 in Ontario married to Clemence Catherine Marlow.
He then married Elmire or Edmire Payette/Payet about 1874 somewhere in Ontario.
She was born about 1851 and died 1891 in Ontario.
He had at least 2 more children with her.
Rose-Ann born 1875 in Ontario who married twice, Joseph Laurendeau and Georges Dutemple.
Edward/Edmond born 1877 in Ontario married twice, Leonie Laverture/Laverdure and Mary Rousselle.
I will continue to look for him at the library, but he may have changed his name to St Louis himself and may also have changed his first name and without the name of his first wife, it is quite impossible to trace.
He does not seem to descend from the DeBilly line, the Filiatrault line, the Lalande line or the Desfosses line.
The best would be to locate the birth certificate of Julie, where possibly the name of her mother would be indicated. Also if you find the wedding with Elmire Payette, it may be stated widow of ??.
Good luck.
As i first originally thought, he descends from the Billy line. I have the De Billy ancestry all the way up to the pharaons of Egypt. If you are interested, let me know. The french names are not translated in english though as names should never be.

There are over 15 lines of St Louis, all are nicknames since no St Louis immigrated from France. The St Louis surname is about the most difficult surname to research and i have been at it for over 25 years.

One of the reasons for taking nicknames in our forefathers was to differentiate between similar lineage. For example 2 unrelated Filiatrault immigrated from France, so the second one chose St Louis as a nickname. I descend from this second Filiatrault.
If you do not have your ancestry from the DeBilly line from which i also descend, i have the DeBilly line going as far as king Charlemagne and beyond. give me your most ancient DeBilly and i will send you the ancestry if you want it.
Reach me at my e-mail address.

Re: St Louis Family Deseronto Ontario Canada 1860's-1940's

Hello Bill: In the search for my ggfather's family I have found Julie Ann Payette m. Magloire Lariviere 1860 at Clarence Creek. Her parents are Jean Baptiste Payette and Marie Julie St. Louis. Julie Ann, we believe is sister of my ggrandfather, also named Jean Baptiste Payette. The names vary from Paye, Payet, Payette and on 1861 Census they appear as PiYea. It appears other siblings are possibly, Baptiste, Delphius (or Delphis) and Alexandre, and I have found a Joseph at Grenville under name Payie which is our correct surname now. According to 1861 census, Julie Ann would have been born 1839, Baptiste 1831, Delphis 1834, my ggfather b. December 21, 1833 (from Archives record in Toronto). All these people were born in Quebec. Somewhere! Have found census dates far from accurate. Do you know anything about Marie Julie St. Louis or this family? I have another Jean Baptiste Paye/Payette m. Marie Filiatrault and it would seem Marie Julie St. Louis died and J.B. Paye/Payette took a second wife. With all the Paye/ Payette name variations it is difficult to sort the families.

The more i research the more it seems he was married twice. As it looks now my great grandmother (his daughter) is from his first wife. The St Louis connections are giving me a lot of trouble as i don't know the "dit name" associated to his family. However a connection is with your people is a possibility and will keep your info in mind.
Thanks for respondind to my post..will keep in touch.
Regards Bill.

Hi Carroll,
We have had a look at the 1881 census for Deseronto and my gr.gr. grandmother Elimire Piette (married to Eli St Louis)is listed as being 48 yrs old. This means that she would have been born around 1833.It would also seem that she is Eli's only wife. We had been going on her burial records from the church in Napannee Ontario which stated she was 40 yrs old at the time of her death in 1892.
Regards Bill.

Hello Claire,
My great grandmother was was Julia St Louis from the Belleville Ontario area born 1859 and her father was Ellias (Eli) St Louis born 1823. I do not know which area of Quebec they came from but i suspect they left in the late 1850's.
I was wondering if these names would tie in with any of your family?
By the way...i live a half hour west of Eganville Ontario and have noticed a mail box a few miles west of Eganville at a farm with the St Louis name on it along Hwy #60.
Regards Bill.

Hello Jessica,
My great grandmother was a St Louis and i have benn trying to research her line for several years now. There are about forty "dit names" associated with the St Louis name and that makes it rather difficult to trace these families. One of these dit names is Potvin and the dit name was used to to identify this family as being the Potvin's of the village of St Louis. That's the best i can explain it to you.
My family of St Louis is in Ontario and was here about 1860 in a small town near Belleville Ontario, if there is any connection to your husband's family i would be interested in exchanging info with you.I do know that some of this family moved onto the Toronto area.

I have found that not all families using the St.Louis surname are related. Many French Acadians (for reasons unknown) took "dit" names (nick names). Our family was DeBilly dit St.Louis in Canada; but, when they came to the US they dropped the "DeBilly dit" and became St.Louis'. I have also run into Fillareault dit St.Louis' and Arnault dit St.Louis' that are now in the US as St.Louis. Very confusing and no one can tell me why they did it.
