On the Web:
http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/release.aspx?releaseid=1...

IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 252-09
April 16, 2009
Navy Commissions New Guided Missile Destroyer Stockdale

The Navy will commission the newest Arleigh Burke class guided-missile destroyer, Stockdale, during an 11:00 a.m. PST ceremony on Saturday, April 18, 2009, in Port Hueneme, Calif.

Designated DDG 106, the new destroyer honors Medal of Honor recipient Vice Adm. James Bond Stockdale (1923-2005), the legendary leader of American prisoners of war (POWs) during the Vietnam War.

Stockdale was the highest-ranking naval officer ever held as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. His plane was shot down Sept. 9, 1965, while flying combat missions over North Vietnam. Stockdale spent more than seven years in captivity at prisons in North Vietnam, including time at the infamous “Hanoi Hilton.” Four of those years were spent in solitary confinement. While imprisoned, Stockdale is credited with organizing a set of rules to govern the behavior of fellow prisoners of war and for helping to develop a code for prisoners to communicate with each other that included tapping on cell walls. In recognition of his leadership and sacrifice he was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1976.

Stockdale received 26 combat medals and awards, including two Distinguished Flying Crosses, three Distinguished Service Medals, two Purple Hearts and four Silver Stars. He was also named to the Aircraft Carrier Hall of Fame, National Aviation Hall of Fame, and was an honorary member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots.

Commander, U.S. Pacific Command, Adm. Timothy Keating, will deliver the ceremony's principal address. Sybil Stockdale will serve as sponsor of the ship named for her late husband. The ceremony will be highlighted by a time-honored Navy tradition when she gives the first order to “man our ship and bring her to life!”

Stockdale is the 56th of 62 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. The ship will be able to conduct a variety of operations, from peacetime presence and crisis management to sea control and power projection. Stockdale will be capable of fighting air, surface and subsurface battles simultaneously and contains a myriad of offensive and defensive weapons designed to support maritime warfare in keeping with “A Cooperative Strategy for 21st Century Seapower,” the new maritime strategy that postures the sea services to apply maritime power to protect U.S. vital interests in an increasingly interconnected and uncertain world.

Cmdr. Fred W. Kacher, of Oakton, Va., will become the first commanding officer of the ship and will lead the crew of 276 officers and enlisted personnel. The 9,200-ton Stockdale was built by Bath Iron Works, a General Dynamics Company. The ship is 509 feet in length, has a waterline beam of 59 feet, and a navigational draft of 31 feet. Four gas turbine engines will power the ship to speeds in excess of 30 knots.

For more information on Arleigh Burke class destroyers, visit
http://www.navy.mil/navydata/fact_display.asp?cid=4200&t... .

Stockdale marriage in Oregon, 1920--help me ID the bride!

Hello,

I am new to the boards, so I hope I'm organizing this query correctly. Using the "Oregon Marriages 1906-1920" search (full citation below), I found this listing on a person (if it's him) I am researching:

Name: Leonard A Stockdale
County: Multnomah
Marriage Date: 25 Jun 1920

However, there was no bride listed. Does anyone know of online access to this information, or a way I can search via date, to find the bride, OR have this info, please? I would be very grateful! Also, if you can confirm the full middle name of Leonard Stockdale here, or birthdate or mother's name or some other identifier, that would be wonderful as well. Thank you so much!

Full citation: Ancestry.com. Oregon Marriages, 1906-1920 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2000. Original data: State of Oregon. Oregon Marriage Index, 1906-1920. Portland, OR, USA: Oregon Health Division, Center for Health Statistics.

Hi, I'm John Stockdale another of Reginald Booth Stockdale's 3 children. Lillian Booth's Fruit and Roses picture is on the wall next to me so that's one mystery sorted. She died in 1957. I remember her acerbic style. We saw her off on a train once. She walked into a carriage with just one spare seat with a briefcase clearly reserving it for someone; she put the briefcase in the luggage rack and when someone started to explain it was reserved, said: "Bums reserve seats, not briefcases."

How fabulous to hear from you both and fascinating to know you are heading out to Mauritius!

Yes, I have now realised my mistake about James. Your great aunt Lillian mentions the Stockdales in her will. But it is James Booth Taylor (my own great uncle) not James Booth Stockdale, that is mentioned. Interestingly Lillian distributed her paintings in her will, her watercolour "Fruit and Roses" went to Reginald, while her watercolour "Dog and Child" (which went to my grandfather) is actually hanging in my bedroom right now! Any idea where "Fruit and Roses" is today? It would be interesting to know!

Well, I'm not sure how this Rootsweb communication system works, but if there is not an email displayed on my profile you are welcome to contact me on seankisby at yahoo dot co dot uk.

Hi Larry,
Looking into your Joeseph and Emily, I didn't think I could see a link with Elizabeth Stockdale (Nee Allen) and Ben Stockdale as they had no "Joseph" (son) although Ben did have a brother called Joseph (born 1869) which might fit? He would have only been 27 if he died in 1896. Your Emily would have been 52 at the time - perhaps not them.

Hi Sarah, Larry;
From the 1891 Census for East Markham, I see that a George Allen (Visitor) is at the Chappell Street home of Mary Stockdale (Ben Stockdales Mother) - so it would appear that he also returned to the UK by this time. He is also listed as a widower.

Hi Larry, Sarah.
From the 1901 England Census, I see that George Stockdale was born in "America" - the emunerator has written "Amania" which Ancestry.co.uk have allocated to Nottinghsamshire, England. Which is close I suppose.
Ancestry.com "world" subscribers can see passenger lists for sailings from the UK to America (New York) - I see from the summary page that Elizabeth Stockdale appears on an 1886 manifest, but no Benjamin. I scrolled back before George was born, but nothing rang any bells. It would seem the family went to America, or at least Elizabeth (surely she wouldn't have travelled pregnant?) and returned between 1881 and 1891 as the appear on both english census of those years. It also seems odd, as Ben was only a farm labourer possibly on his Fathers (George) farm (14 acres only)- I can't imagine they had the money to pay for the crossing. Were there sponsered or state funded passages at this time? I don't know.
Regards Nick

hi Sarah, We do have a strong correlation, but the Illinois ones are a little confusing... I wonder what took the family to the States and back again so soon?
I have; Elizabeth Stockdale (Nee Allen) married to Ben Stockdale. They had 6 Children living with them at the time of the 1901 Census of England. Those were; Mary A 1884, George 1887, Minnie 1889, Willie 1891, Florence 1894, Benjamin 1897, Charles H 1900.
Elizabeth Allen's parents were George Allen 1823, and Anne Worsley 1821. I've already mentioned Bens Parents.
Search for the Stockdale Public tree and see how it all fits together.
Regards Nick Stockdale

We are looking for further information on William Stockdale whom was a Minister of the Friends Church now known as Quakers. He emigrated to the USA in the mid 1600s after being placed in Stocks for failure to pay a Tax to the Church of England. He apparenly autherd several books about the Friends Church and it's people being persecuted. I believe he is the firs of my family line to come to the US or at that time the Colonies. He came on a Ship named Friends Sailed from London. Any information you have would be appreciated.
I would like to share information with you as we have an extensive line of Stockdales in the US since 1635

Thanks, Nick,

Sounds doubtful. My Joseph most likely was born around 1840 in or near Yorkshire. He evidently didn't emigrate with his wife Emily when she came to the US in 1883, but shows up later. Their two sons were born in England, but all 6 daughters were born in Illinois. By 1900 he had died, probably in 1896. Emily is listed in 1900 US census as head of household living on Martin St in LaMoille (she was 56 then), with all 6 girls living with her. Son John shoes up in the 1920 US census as head of household, with his mother and sister (Laura, my mother)living with him.

larry

Hi Sarah,

The LaMoille IL connection caught my eye because of possible connections with my mother, Laura Stockdale Gross, also of LaMoille. Her father, Joseph Stockdale of LaMoille, died in 1896. Her mother, Emily, was listed as head of household in the 1900 census.

I don't know what the relationship with your Stockdales might be.

According to the 1900 census:

Name: Laura Stockdale
Home in 1900: La Moille, Bureau, Illinois
Age: 5
Estimated birth year: abt 1895
Birthplace: Illinois
Relationship to head-of-house: Daughter
Father's name:
Mother's name: Emily
Race: White
Household Members:
Name Age
Emily Stockdale 56
Mary Stockdale 14
Anna Stockdale 16
Rose Stockdale 12
Lucile Stockdale 10
Jennie Stockdale 9
Laura Stockdale 5

[There were evidently also two older sons, John and Harry, not living at home.]

larry gross

I believe Mabel and Reginald had 3 sons, Reginald Booth Stockdale, Kenneth Stockdale and James Stockdale, probably all born in Mauritius (or en-route).

It would be interesting to hear from any relations.

Hello. I'm descended from Edward Stocksdale and Eleanor Bennett, through their daughter Jemima. I just found your post on Ancestry.com and I'm wondering if your Elisha was Jemima's brother. She married John Brown in Baltimore area, MD about 1802 or 1804 and they emigrated to OH about 1817; they show up in the OH Census of 1820, p.720. Do you have information on Edward Stocksdale and Eleanor Bennett, either their descendants or ancestors? Thanks, Sherrie Eby
