One Jesse Stockton Theory

It has come to my attention that a theory proposing there is only one Jesse Stockton (Jesse 3, Thomas 2, Davis 1) exists. This theory is completely based on tax records from Virginia in the late 1780s and early 1790s.

This theory is completely wrong. Census records prove conclusively there was also another Jesse Stockton (Jesse 3, Samuel 2, Davis 1). The confusion here seems to be that the tax records showed that Jesse 3, son of Thomas, was not married to the Rachel in the tax records; she was actually his mother. This Jesse married a woman named Mary. Jesse 3, son of Samuel, married Mary Hayes in Virginia. That both Jesse 3s married a woman named Mary is true. This only adds to the confusion.

However, Jesse 3, son of Thomas moved to Barren KY and is listed there in the 1810 Census. Jesse 3, son of Samuel, is listed in the 1800 Second Census of Kentucky (the first one was lost or destroyed and the second one was developed from tax records) as living in Mason Co., KY. According to both TJ Stockton's book (with info gleaned from the Family Bible of Samuel Stockton) and a biographical sketh in the Worth-Gentry County History published in 1882 (info given to the writer by James Stockton, grandson of Samuel and son of Jesse), James Stockton moved to Champaign Co., OH when he was 18 (c. 1815) and from there moved to Kentucky where he was married. In the 1820 Census, James is, as those narratives claimed, listed in Woodford Co., Kentucky with a female of the same age (his wife, likely). Also, in 1820, Jesse was living in Clark Co., OH. (Clark Co., was formed out of Champaign Co. in 1818). This would also seem to confirm information given by these two narratives. In 1830, both Jesse and James were living in Jennings Co., IN, where Jesse died in 1834. In the 1840 Census, James was living in Hendricks Co., IN; another record confirming the Stocktons' narratives.

Researchers must also remember that there may be children of Davis Stockton's descendents we may have no existing records for. There could have been more than two Jesse Stocktons in this age range. However, we know for certain of at least two: (Jesse 3, Thomas 2, Davis 1) and (Jesse 3, Samuel 2, Davis 1).
